AM5 processors: lowest prices

An AM5 processor is the CPU that slots into AMD's current desktop socket — the same socket used by the AM5 boards in our catalog. It's the part that does the computing in your PC: gaming, streaming, content work, and everyday tasks. Before buying, confirm your motherboard uses the AM5 socket, check that its BIOS supports the processor generation you want, and match the cooler and power supply to the chip's heat output. Note that AM5 systems use DDR5 memory.

Questions

Will any AM5 processor fit my motherboard?

If your board uses the AM5 socket, the processor will fit — and all eight devices listed on this page are AM5 boards. The socket is only part of the picture, though. Check the motherboard's supported processor list to see whether the chip you want is supported and whether a BIOS update is required first.

How much processor do I actually need?

For browsing, office work, and most games, a mainstream AM5 chip is more than enough. Choose more cores and threads if you edit video, render 3D, compile code, stream while gaming, or run several demanding applications at once. Buying more than your workload needs mostly buys headroom you won't use.

What should I look at to judge speed?

Two things matter most: clock speed, measured in GHz, and core/thread count. Higher clock speed tends to help with tasks that run on one or a few cores; more cores help when software can spread work across them at once. Manufacturer benchmarks for your own type of workload are the most reliable way to compare chips.

Is buying a used processor a good idea?

It can save money, and processors have no moving parts to wear out. Ask about its history and check that the contact pads on the underside are clean and undamaged. Make sure you can return it if it doesn't work. Choose new if you want a warranty and predictable support.
