Gigabyte B650M Gaming Wifi upgrades

Released 2023 · on sale

No soldered memory or CPU — all components are socketed and upgradeable. Caution: 'B650M GAMING WIFI' also exists as an MSI board (2× M.2, Wi-Fi 6E, 2.5G LAN); retailer listings frequently mix the specs, so verify you have the Gigabyte (1× M.2) version and check the PCB revision (Rev 1.1–1.4) before buying RAM, as max OC speed differs (7200 vs 7600 MT/s). The onboard M.2 Key-E slot is occupied by the pre-installed Wi-Fi module and cannot be used for storage.

2× DDR5 DIMM slots, 128 GB max 2 × DDR5 DIMM · up to 128 GB total · 7600 MT/s

Full-size 288-pin DDR5 only (no DDR4, no SO-DIMM). Non-ECC unbuffered only — avoid ECC or RDIMM/LRDIMM. Rated 7600 MT/s applies to Rev 1.4; Rev 1.1/1.2 top out at 7200 MT/s, and the manual lists only 5200/4800/4400 JEDEC. Buy a matched 2-stick kit (EXPO/XMP), and note the CPU's memory controller often limits real speed (≈6000 MT/s sweet spot on Ryzen 7000/9000). Single module goes in DDR5_A.

1× M.2 2280/2580 NVMe + 4× SATA 5 × SSD / HDD M.2 2280 / M.2 2280 / M.2 2280 (NVMe / SATA)

Exactly one M.2 slot on the Gigabyte board (Socket 3, M key, 2280 or 2580) — do not be misled by MSI listings, the MSI B650M GAMING WIFI has 2× M.2. M.2 is PCIe/NVMe only (4.0 x4/x2, CPU lanes); M.2 SATA drives are not supported. Plus 4× SATA 6 Gb/s with RAID 0/1/10. 2.5"/3.5" bay counts and SSD thickness limits (7 vs 9.5 mm) depend on your case. A second NVMe needs a PCIe adapter card in the x16 slot.

Socket AM5 — Ryzen 7000/8000/9000 AM5 · Ryzen 7000, Ryzen 8000G, Ryzen 9000

Socket AM5 (LGA1718), fully replaceable — AMD Ryzen 7000/8000/9000 desktop CPUs. A BIOS update is likely required for Ryzen 8000 and 9000 chips (check Gigabyte's CPU Support List; some revisions support CPU-less flashing). Gigabyte publishes no TDP limit; the B650 platform handles 170 W chips in theory, but this budget 2-DIMM mATX board's modest VRM/cooling makes sustained loads on 16-core 170 W parts a concern.
