RAM: 4 DDR5 slots, up to 256 GB
What fits. The board has four full-size DDR5 DIMM slots (dual-channel) and accepts non-ECC un-buffered desktop DDR5 only. Registered server memory (RDIMM/ECC) will not work here, and nothing is soldered, so all four slots are yours to fill. The current MSI spec sheet sets the ceiling at 64 GB per module and 256 GB in total. Older manual revisions you may find online mention 128 GB or 192 GB and a 6600 MT/s cap — those figures are outdated. The current spec (256 GB, DDR5-7800+) is the one to go by; it reflects BIOS/AGESA updates rather than any hardware change, and there are no board variants with different RAM hardware. The limits. Speed drops as you add more sticks and ranks. DDR5-7800+ needs a single single-rank stick per channel (two sticks total). With four sticks of dual-rank memory you are looking at 5400+, with the other combinations in between. The board boots at standard DDR5-4800 (single-rank) until you enable a memory profile (AMD EXPO, or XMP-style overclocking) in the BIOS. MSI also recommends extra memory cooling when all four slots are filled or when overclocking. One manual detail to follow: populate DIMMA2 first. Buying tips. For maximum speed, buy a matched two-stick EXPO kit. For maximum capacity, plan on four 64 GB modules and accept the lower clock. Check that the kit is non-ECC un-buffered desktop DDR5.
Buying tips
- Matched 2-stick EXPO kit if speed matters; 4 x 64 GB modules if capacity matters
- Confirm non-ECC un-buffered desktop DDR5 (DIMM, not laptop SO-DIMM)
- Add memory cooling if you fill all four slots or overclock

Storage: 4 M.2 NVMe slots and 4 SATA ports
M.2 SSDs. There are four M.2 Key M slots and all of them are PCIe/NVMe only — a SATA-protocol M.2 SSD will not work in any of them. The top slot (M2_1) runs off the CPU at PCIe 5.0 x4 and is the only slot that takes the longer 22110 drives; it comes with a heatsink. M2_2, M2_3 and M2_4 run off the X670 chipset at PCIe 4.0 x4 and take 2260 or 2280 drives. Two things to watch. M2_4 shares bandwidth with the bottom expansion slot (PCI_E4): fit a card there and the SSD drops to PCIe 4.0 x2. And M2_1 is the only slot for 22110-length drives. SATA drives. There are also four SATA 6 Gb/s ports for standard 2.5" or 3.5" drives. They connect with SATA data and power cables; your case must provide the bays, and the data cables are not included with the board. Hot-plug is supported, as are RAID 0, 1 and 10 on both SATA and NVMe. NVMe RAID 5 needs a Ryzen 9000 CPU. MSI states no maximum drive capacity, so limits come from the drives themselves. Buying tips. Pick NVMe, not SATA M.2. Use M2_1 for your fastest boot drive. Keep the bottom PCIe slot free if you care about M2_4 speed, and check drive length before buying (22110 fits only in M2_1).
Buying tips
- NVMe/PCIe M.2 drives only — SATA-protocol M.2 will not work
- 22110 drives fit only in M2_1; 2260/2280 fit the other slots
- Keep the bottom PCIe slot empty if you want full M2_4 speed
- Budget for SATA data cables and case bays if you add 2.5"/3.5" drives

CPU: Socket AM5 (LGA1718)
What fits. The board takes AMD Socket AM5 (LGA1718) desktop processors: Ryzen 7000 at launch, with Ryzen 8000 and Ryzen 9000 series added later via BIOS updates. The socket is fully user-replaceable. The limits. BIOS version is the thing to check first — a board that has never been updated may not accept a Ryzen 8000 or 9000 chip, so update the BIOS while the old CPU is still installed. MSI notes that the AM5 platform can clear or reset BIOS settings when the CPU is changed, so write down your settings beforehand. MSI's documents do not quote a numeric TDP cap for the board; it is designed for 170 W-class Ryzen 9 parts and offers PBO thermal profiles (85/75/65 degrees C) and a 65 W ECO mode in Click BIOS 5. One more compatibility note: the board's HDMI/DisplayPort/USB-C display outputs only work with a CPU that has integrated graphics. If your CPU has none, you need a discrete graphics card. The top graphics slot (PCI_E1) is PCIe 5.0 x16, but how many lanes it actually runs depends on the CPU: x16 with Ryzen 9000/7000, x8 with Ryzen 8700/8600/8400, and x4 with Ryzen 8500/8300. MSI advises a GPU support bracket for heavy cards to avoid slot deformation. Buying tips. Choose an AM5 Ryzen 7000, 8000 or 9000 desktop chip. Confirm the installed BIOS supports it before you swap, and if the CPU has no integrated graphics, make sure you have a graphics card too.
Buying tips
- Match the chip to Socket AM5: Ryzen 7000, 8000 or 9000 series desktop
- Update the BIOS first if you are jumping to Ryzen 8000/9000
- No integrated graphics means you need a discrete GPU for any display output

- Enter the BIOS and confirm the new part is detected — set the memory profile for new RAM, and update the BIOS before a CPU swap if needed.
Steps
- Before you begin
Back up your data before touching storage and note your BIOS settings before a CPU swap. MSI warns that changing the CPU on AM5 can clear BIOS settings. - Power down
Shut the PC down fully and unplug the power cable from the wall. - Ground yourself
Touch the metal case or use an anti-static strap before handling the new part. - Open the case
Remove the side panel and any shields needed. MSI's owner's manual shows the exact layout and screw locations for this board. - Install
Fit the part as described in its section above — DIMMA2 first for RAM, the M.2 screw/clip and M2_1 heatsink for SSDs (M2_4 uses an EZ M.2 Clip for 2280 drives), the AM5 socket for a CPU. - Close up and check
Close the case, reconnect power, boot and enter the BIOS to confirm the new RAM, drive or CPU is recognised. Enable the memory profile for new RAM.
Good to know
- MSI's documents do not state a numeric maximum CPU TDP; the board is designed for 170 W-class parts.
- RAM figures vary between manual revisions: ignore the 128/192 GB and 6600 MT/s numbers from older versions.
Frequently asked questions
How much RAM can the MSI MAG X670E TOMAHAWK WIFI take?
Up to 256 GB total across four DDR5 DIMM slots, using 64 GB modules. Some older manual revisions say 128 or 192 GB — that is an outdated spec. The current MSI spec sheet (256 GB) is authoritative.
Does it support ECC or registered memory?
No. MSI validates non-ECC un-buffered desktop DDR5 only, so ECC and registered server modules (RDIMM/LRDIMM) are not supported, despite the AM5 platform's partial ECC capability.
Does the board support SATA M.2 SSDs?
No. All four M.2 slots are PCIe/NVMe only. A SATA-protocol M.2 drive will not work in any of them. For SATA drives, use the four SATA 6 Gb/s ports.
Do I need a BIOS update for a Ryzen 9000 or 8000 CPU?
Very likely. The board launched for Ryzen 7000 and gained 8000/9000 support through BIOS updates, so update the BIOS before installing the new chip. Check the BIOS version first.
Will a card in the bottom PCIe slot slow my SSD?
Yes, if the SSD is in M2_4. That slot shares bandwidth with PCI_E4 and drops to PCIe 4.0 x2 when a card is installed there. M2_1 to M2_3 are unaffected.
Does the board have video output, or do I need a graphics card?
It has HDMI/DisplayPort/USB-C outputs, but they only work with a CPU that has integrated graphics. With a graphics-less CPU you must use a discrete graphics card.
