Minisforum UM580 upgrade guide

Updated Oct. 19, 2026 · Written from this device's verified specifications

The Minisforum UM580 is one of the friendlier mini PCs to upgrade. It has two RAM slots and two drive bays, all user-accessible, and nothing is soldered down except the processor. Here's what fits, what the limits are, and what to watch for before you buy. For exact disassembly instructions, follow the owner's manual for your unit.

At a glance

  • 2x SO-DIMM DDR4-3200 RAM slots, up to 32 GB per module and 64 GB in total
  • One M.2 2280 slot (NVMe PCIe 3.0 x4 or SATA/NGFF) plus one 2.5" SATA 3.0 bay
  • Vendor rates each drive bay at up to 2 TB; 4 TB M.2 drives usually work but are not officially validated
  • The Ryzen 7 5800H is soldered — the CPU cannot be upgraded, and there is no external GPU path
  • Barebones SKUs ship without RAM, SSD or Windows, and may need a Wi-Fi/BT module for the M.2 2230 slot

RAM upgrade

The UM580 has two SO-DIMM slots — the laptop-style modules, not full-size desktop DIMMs — and none of the memory is soldered, so both slots are yours to populate. It takes DDR4-3200 (PC4-25600), unbuffered and non-ECC only. Each slot accepts up to 32 GB, for a maximum of 64 GB (2 x 32 GB). If you see UM580 listings quoting 2133 MHz, ignore them: that's a retail data error, and the platform runs DDR4-3200.

Both slots support dual-channel operation, and it matters here. The UM580 has integrated Radeon Vega 8 graphics with no dedicated video memory, so a single stick halves the memory bandwidth available to the GPU. Buy a matched pair (for example 2 x 16 GB or 2 x 32 GB) rather than one large module. The same applies if you're adding to an existing stick — matching capacity and speed gets you the best result.

Buying tips: check whether you have a barebones or pre-configured unit first — barebones SKUs ship with no memory at all. Avoid ECC or registered modules; the board doesn't support them. Kits advertised as DDR4-3200 SODIMM (PC4-25600) are what you want.

Buying tips

  • DDR4-3200 SO-DIMM (PC4-25600), unbuffered, non-ECC
  • Max 32 GB per module, 64 GB total
  • Buy a matched pair for dual-channel — it noticeably helps the integrated GPU

Storage upgrade

There are two storage bays. First, one M.2 2280 M-key slot that takes either an NVMe PCIe 3.0 x4 SSD or a SATA (NGFF) M.2 SSD. Second, a 2.5" SATA 3.0 (6 Gb/s) bay for an SSD or hard drive. That's it — there's no second M.2 slot, no PCIe add-in slot and no Thunderbolt port, so dual-NVMe or external GPU upgrades are off the table. If you're browsing drives, note that the small M.2 2230 slot inside is for a Wi-Fi/Bluetooth card only; it is not a storage slot.

Minisforum rates each bay at up to 2 TB. In practice, 4 TB M.2 2280 NVMe drives usually work in machines like this, but they're outside the vendor's validated list, so treat that as unconfirmed and check reports for your specific drive before buying.

A few things to watch. The 2.5" drive thickness limit isn't documented in any official spec: the 46.5 mm-tall chassis and Minisforum's standard bracket are generally reported to take 7 mm drives, so verify with Minisforum support before ordering a 9.5 mm or 15 mm drive. If you fit a SATA M.2 drive rather than NVMe, check with Minisforum that your BIOS revision supports SATA in that slot — the marketing pages advertise "NGFF SATA or NVMe," but single-mode sockets do exist in this chassis family.

Buying tips: an NVMe PCIe 3.0 x4 drive is the natural choice for the M.2 slot (PCIe 4.0 drives will work but can't use their full speed), and a 7 mm 2.5" SATA SSD or HDD is the safe bet for the second bay.

Buying tips

  • M.2 2280: NVMe PCIe 3.0 x4 or SATA/NGFF — vendor-rated up to 2 TB per bay
  • 2.5" bay: SATA 3.0 only; 7 mm drives are the safe choice
  • Don't buy a second NVMe drive expecting to slot it in — there is only one M.2 storage slot

How to upgrade

Before you start

  • Back up anything important before opening the case.
  • Shut the unit down completely and unplug the power cable and all peripherals.
  • Ground yourself to avoid static damage to the components.
  • Open the case following the owner's manual for your exact unit — the disassembly details aren't described in any official document we've seen, so don't guess at latches or screws.
  • Install the new RAM module or drive in the appropriate slot.
  • Close the case and reconnect the power.
  • Power on and check that the BIOS/firmware reports the new part and the expected capacity before booting into your operating system.

Steps

  1. Before you start
Back up your data. Power the UM580 down fully and unplug the power adapter and all cables. Ground yourself before touching the internals.
  2. Open the case
Disassembly isn't detailed in any official specification we've seen, so use the owner's manual for your unit for the exact opening procedure rather than prying at it.
  3. Install the part
For RAM, seat a DDR4-3200 SO-DIMM in each slot you want to populate — a matched pair is best. For storage, fit an M.2 2280 drive in the M-key slot and/or a 2.5" SATA drive in the drive bay (check drive thickness first).
  4. Close up and verify
Reassemble the case, reconnect power, and start the machine. Confirm the BIOS/firmware sees the new memory or drive and the correct capacity before booting your operating system.

Good to know

  • Sources disagree on the CPU's configured TDP: one article quotes 35 W, while the 5800H is nominally a 45 W part with a 35–54 W configurable range and reported ~30/45 W modes.
  • Display output counts conflict: Minisforum and Newegg claim quad-display support, while Amazon's UM580D listing describes only three outputs.
  • The 2.5" drive thickness limit is not documented anywhere official; 7 mm drives are widely reported to fit — confirm before buying a thicker drive.
  • UM580D (Amazon) is the same upgradeable platform as the UM580. The UM560 is a different, 6-core model that shares the chassis.

Frequently asked questions

How much RAM can the Minisforum UM580 take?

64 GB total — two SO-DIMM slots, up to 32 GB per module, DDR4-3200, unbuffered and non-ECC. Minisforum, Amazon and Newegg all state the same ceiling.

What RAM does the UM580 use?

Laptop-style DDR4-3200 (PC4-25600) SO-DIMMs. Full-size desktop DIMMs won't fit, and ECC or registered modules aren't supported. Retail listings showing 2133 MHz are a data error.

Can you upgrade the CPU in the UM580?

No. The Ryzen 7 5800H is soldered to the board in a BGA FP6 package with no socket, so there's nothing to swap. It's the only processor the UM580 supports.

How many SSDs fit in the UM580?

Two drives: one M.2 2280 (NVMe PCIe 3.0 x4 or SATA/NGFF) plus one 2.5" SATA 3.0 HDD or SSD. Each is vendor-rated at up to 2 TB. The M.2 2230 slot inside is for Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, not storage.

Does the UM580 support 4 TB drives?

Minisforum's validated limit is 2 TB per bay. 4 TB M.2 2280 NVMe drives are widely reported to work in similar machines, but they're outside official validation, so we can't confirm it for the UM580 — check user reports for your drive before buying.

Can I add an external or discrete graphics card?

No. The UM580 uses integrated Radeon Vega 8 graphics with no discrete GPU option and no Thunderbolt port, so there's no eGPU path. Note also that sources disagree on the video outputs — some listings describe three displays and others four — so check the ports on your own unit.
