Lenovo ThinkPad P15 Gen 2 (Type 20YQ/20YR) Upgrade Guide
Updated Oct. 30, 2026 · Written from this device's verified specifications
The ThinkPad P15 Gen 2 (Type 20YQ/20YR) is one of the friendlier mobile workstations to upgrade. It takes up to 128 GB of memory across four SO-DIMM slots and up to three M.2 NVMe drives. The processor, unfortunately, is fixed at purchase. Here is what fits in each area, what the limits are, and what to watch out for before you buy parts.
At a glance
- RAM: 4 x DDR4-3200 SO-DIMM, up to 128 GB (4 x 32 GB)
- Storage: 3 x M.2 2280 NVMe SSD (1 x Gen4, 2 x Gen3), up to 2 TB per drive
- CPU: soldered, not upgradeable - pick the tier you need at purchase

RAM Upgrade
There are four SO-DIMM slots and nothing is soldered, so you can install memory from scratch or expand what is already there. Two slots (called a and b) sit under the bottom cover; the other two (c and d) are under the keyboard. With one or two modules, use only the bottom-cover slots. With three or four, fill the bottom slots first and then add the rest under the keyboard. Installing in the wrong order can stop the machine booting or leave it running single-channel.
Buying tips
- Buy DDR4-3200 SO-DIMM (1.2 V laptop modules) only - not desktop DIMMs and not DDR5.
- Unbuffered modules only. Matched modules (same capacity, speed and type) give the best dual-channel performance.
- The ceiling is 128 GB as 4 x 32 GB, which is what Lenovo has tested. Larger modules may work but are unverified.
- ECC only works if your machine has a Xeon W-11855M or W-11955M processor and you fit ECC SO-DIMMs. Core i5/i7/i9 models need non-ECC memory, and dropping ECC modules into them will not give you ECC.

Storage Upgrade
All three drive slots are M.2 2280 NVMe (M.2 2280-S3, up to 2.3 mm thick) on PCIe x4 lanes. There is no SATA support and no 2.5-inch bay, so cheap bulk SATA drives are not an option here. One slot is PCIe 4.0 x4 and the other two are PCIe 3.0 x4. Lenovo's marketing material suggests all three are Gen 4, but the detailed PSREF specification is more precise - trust it. A Gen 4 drive in a Gen 3 slot simply runs at Gen 3 speeds.
Buying tips
- Lenovo has tested up to 2 TB per drive, giving 6 TB across three slots. Bigger drives are unverified.
- Check the drive thickness: the slots take M.2 2280 modules up to 2.3 mm, and some performance SSDs with heatsinks are thicker than that.
- RAID 0/1 is BIOS-selectable, but only across the two Gen 3 slots. In RAID mode, Opal 2.0 self-encrypting drive support is unavailable.
- Retail drives may ship as either Gen 3 or Gen 4 as a substitution - check what you are actually buying if Gen 4 speeds matter to you.

How to upgrade
Before you start
- Back up your data before opening the case.
- Power the laptop off completely and unplug the AC adapter.
- Ground yourself to avoid static damage to the components.
- Open the case and install the parts. Two of the four RAM slots and all three M.2 slots need the bottom cover removed; the remaining RAM slots need the keyboard removed as well.
- Close everything back up, power on and check in the BIOS/firmware that the new memory and drives are detected.
- For the exact screws, release points, torque values and ESD guidance, follow the hardware maintenance manual for your model.
Steps
- RAM Installation
Remove the bottom cover (and the keyboard if you are filling slots c and d). Insert each SO-DIMM into its slot and press it down until it is seated. Follow the fill order: bottom-cover slots first, keyboard slots second, and use matched modules. Close the machine and confirm in the BIOS that all four modules are recognised at the expected total. - SSD Installation
Remove the bottom cover. Slide each M.2 2280 drive into its slot at the correct angle and secure it as the manual describes. Close the machine, enter the BIOS to confirm the drives are detected, and set up RAID from the BIOS if you want it - remembering that RAID works only on the two Gen 3 slots. Install your operating system or clone your existing drive afterwards.
Good to know
- The 128 GB RAM and 6 TB storage figures are based on the largest modules Lenovo has tested (32 GB SO-DIMMs, 2 TB drives). Larger parts may work but are not verified.
- Lenovo's marketing material implies all three M.2 slots are Gen 4; the detailed specification says one is Gen 4 x4 and two are Gen 3 x4.
- The P15 Gen 2 shares service documentation with the T15g Gen 2 and P17 Gen 2. Their memory layout is the same, but storage may differ, so double-check before cross-buying parts.
Frequently asked questions
How much RAM can the Lenovo ThinkPad P15 Gen 2 take?
Up to 128 GB across four DDR4-3200 SO-DIMM slots, using 4 x 32 GB modules. That is Lenovo's tested ceiling; larger modules are unverified.
Does the ThinkPad P15 Gen 2 support ECC memory?
Only on Xeon W-11855M and W-11955M configurations, and only with ECC SO-DIMMs. Core i5/i7/i9 models use non-ECC memory, and fitting ECC modules to them will not enable ECC.
Does it support DDR5 RAM?
No. The slots take DDR4-3200 SO-DIMM (1.2 V) modules only. Desktop DIMMs will not fit either.
How many SSDs can I install?
Three M.2 2280 NVMe drives, up to 2 TB each as tested by Lenovo. There is no SATA support and no 2.5-inch bay. One slot is PCIe 4.0 x4 and two are PCIe 3.0 x4.
Can I upgrade the CPU in the ThinkPad P15 Gen 2?
No. The processor is soldered to the motherboard. Choose the Core i5/i7/i9 or Xeon tier you need when buying the laptop.
Does it support RAID?
Yes, RAID 0 and RAID 1 are selectable in the BIOS, but only across the two PCIe Gen 3 slots. Note that Opal 2.0 self-encrypting drive support is unavailable while RAID mode is active.
