Lenovo Legion 5 15ACH6H (MT 82JU) upgrade guide
Updated Oct. 31, 2026 · Written from this device's verified specifications
The Legion 5 15ACH6H (machine type 82JU) is one of the easier gaming laptops to upgrade: both memory slots and both SSD slots are socketed, with no soldered RAM to work around. The processor is a different story, as we explain below. This family is withdrawn from Lenovo's catalogue, so most machines on the market are new-old-stock or refurbished, and regional configurations vary. Check the exact MTM (machine type-model) on Lenovo's PSREF pages before ordering parts.
At a glance
- RAM: 2x DDR4-3200 SO-DIMM slots, both socketed, 32 GB validated maximum (2x 16 GB).
- Storage: 2x M.2 NVMe PCIe 3.0 x4 slots; 1 TB per drive validated, no 2.5-inch bay.
- CPU: soldered and not upgradable. The GPU is soldered too.
- Every upgrade requires removing the bottom cover and disconnecting the internal battery first.

Memory (RAM)
What fits: two DDR4 SO-DIMM slots, both socketed, with no memory soldered to the board. The modules are standard 260-pin DDR4-3200 (PC4-25600) SO-DIMMs running at 1.2 V, unbuffered and non-ECC only. The machine is dual-channel capable, so a matched pair gives you the best bandwidth.
The limits: Lenovo validates 16 GB per module and 32 GB in total (2x 16 GB, CL22). Lenovo is careful to say this is the maximum it has tested with its own memory offerings, not necessarily a hard ceiling, and no cited source validates 2x 32 GB (64 GB) in this chassis. 64 GB is unproven here, so if you want to try it, buy from a seller with a return policy.
What to watch out for: about 7% of machines were found with at least one memory slot empty at purchase, so open the case and check before you buy a two-stick kit. You may only need one extra module. Installing mismatched sticks (different size, rank or latency) often still works but can drop the memory to single-channel mode or a lower speed. Faster modules such as DDR4-3600 XMP parts are pointless here: both the Ryzen 5 5600H and the Ryzen 7 5800H top out at DDR4-3200, and faster memory simply clocks down to 3200.
Buying tip: a matched pair of DDR4-3200 CL22 SO-DIMMs (2x 8 GB or 2x 16 GB). Skip XMP and 3600 MHz kits; they cost more and add nothing here.
Buying tips
- Matched 2x 8 GB or 2x 16 GB DDR4-3200 CL22 kit
- Unbuffered non-ECC SO-DIMMs only
- Don't pay extra for 3600 MHz or XMP modules
- Check for an empty slot first; you may only need one stick

Storage (SSD)
What fits: two M.2 NVMe slots, both wired for PCIe 3.0 x4. There is no SATA M.2 support, no 2.5-inch hard drive bay and no optical drive. If a seller advertises a 'hard drive slot' on a 15ACH6H, they are describing an older, different Legion 5 chassis (such as the 2020 15ARH05H or 15IMH05).
The limits: 1 TB per drive is the ceiling Lenovo has validated. Larger M.2 2280 NVMe drives are widely used in this chassis but are not validated by the manufacturer, so treat them as a gamble and buy where you can return the drive. Gen4 and Gen5 SSDs work but run at PCIe 3.0 speeds, so don't buy them for speed in this machine; buy for capacity, endurance or price.
What to watch out for: Lenovo's own documentation contradicts itself on the drive lengths. The spec sheet describes a 2242 drive plus a 2280 drive, while the same product's slot table says two 2280 slots. In practice a shorter 2242 drive is used in one position in some factory builds. Before ordering, open the bottom panel and look at the mounting standoff to see which length each position takes, then buy accordingly. Also note that the presence of an SD card reader on this model is unconfirmed; check your own machine's PSREF page rather than assuming one is there.
Buying tip: an M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe SSD (1 TB validated) if your standoff supports 2280, otherwise a 2242 drive. Any speed class is fine; Gen3 drives are the sensible match for the PCIe 3.0 interface.
Buying tips
- Open the case and check the standoff before choosing 2242 vs 2280
- 1 TB per slot is the validated maximum; bigger drives are unvalidated
- Gen4 drives only run at Gen3 speeds here
- No SATA or 2.5-inch bay exists in this model

How to upgrade
Before you start
- Back up anything you care about before opening the case.
- Power the laptop off completely and unplug the AC adapter.
- Ground yourself to avoid static damage to the components.
- Remove the bottom cover. To do any internal work, disconnect the internal battery first.
- Fit the new RAM or SSD, reconnect the battery, close the case and secure the cover.
- Power on and check that the BIOS/firmware recognises the new part before booting into your operating system.
- For exact screw locations and disassembly order, use the owner's manual or Lenovo's service documentation for your specific MTM.
Steps
- Before you open the case
Back up your data, shut the machine down fully and unplug the AC adapter. Work somewhere you can ground yourself, and have the owner's manual for your MTM to hand for the exact cover screws and order of disassembly. - Open the case and disconnect the battery
Remove the bottom cover to reach the memory and M.2 slots. Disconnect the internal battery before you touch any component, and only reconnect it once the new part is seated. - Install the part
For RAM, insert each SO-DIMM at the angle shown in the manual and press it down until the side clips lock. For an SSD, check the standoff length first, seat the drive in the M.2 connector at a shallow angle and secure it with the mounting screw. If you are replacing a drive, clone or reinstall your system onto the new one before relying on it. - Close up and verify
Reconnect the battery, refit the bottom cover, plug in and power on. Check in the BIOS/firmware that the new memory size and the new drive are detected. If a part is not recognised, reseat it before assuming it is incompatible.
Good to know
- 64 GB RAM, drives larger than 1 TB per M.2 slot and the presence of an SD card reader are all unconfirmed for this model.
- PSREF contradicts itself on the M.2 drive lengths (2242 + 2280 vs two 2280); check the standoff in your own machine.
- Regional configurations vary: always verify the MTM before ordering parts.
Frequently asked questions
How much RAM can the Legion 5 15ACH6H take?
32 GB is the validated maximum (2x 16 GB DDR4-3200), across two socketed SO-DIMM slots with no soldered memory. Lenovo notes this figure reflects the memory it has tested rather than a guaranteed hard limit, and 64 GB (2x 32 GB) is unproven in this machine.
Does the Legion 5 15ACH6H support 64 GB of RAM?
Not as a validated configuration. The largest setup documented in owner reports is 32 GB. If you try 2x 32 GB modules, buy from a retailer with a good return policy and be prepared for the machine not to accept them.
Can I upgrade the CPU or GPU in my Legion 5 15ACH6H?
No. Both the Ryzen 5 5600H / Ryzen 7 5800H processor and the discrete graphics chip are soldered to the motherboard, so there is nothing to swap. The configuration you bought is the configuration you keep, which is why checking the MTM on PSREF matters when buying used.
Can I add a second SSD to the Legion 5 15ACH6H?
Yes. There are two M.2 NVMe slots wired for PCIe 3.0 x4. 1 TB per drive is what Lenovo validates; larger drives are used successfully by owners but are unvalidated. Check the standoff length in each position first, because Lenovo's documentation disagrees on whether the slots take 2242 or 2280 drives.
Does the Legion 5 15ACH6H have a 2.5-inch hard drive bay or SATA port?
No. Storage is SSD-only through the two M.2 NVMe slots. There is no SATA interface, no 2.5-inch bay and no optical drive in this chassis. Adverts mentioning a hard drive slot are describing a different Legion 5 generation.
Will a Gen4 NVMe SSD or DDR4-3600 RAM work in this laptop?
They will work, but only at the machine's native speeds. The M.2 slots are PCIe 3.0 x4, so a Gen4 drive runs at Gen3 speed, and both supported processors top out at DDR4-3200, so faster modules clock down. Save your money and buy the parts that match the platform.
