HP Victus 16 (2021) upgrade guide
Updated Oct. 11, 2026 · Written from this device's verified specifications
This guide covers the 2021 HP Victus by HP Laptop 16 — the 16-d0000 (Intel) and 16-e0000 (AMD) families, also written as 16-d0xxx / 16-e0xxx. You can add memory and a second SSD yourself. The processor and graphics chip are soldered down and cannot be swapped. Before buying any part, check the exact suffix on your label: the 2021 machines use DDR4, while the visually identical 2022 16-e1000 uses DDR5 and the 2022 16-d1000 is 12th-gen Intel. DDR4 and DDR5 modules are not interchangeable.

Estimate
First availability (US, from ~$799) is inferred, not stated by HP: HP's own Maintenance & Service Guide is 'First Edition, June 2021' (M50595-001, https://manualsnet.com/hp/victus-16-d0000) and the HP BIOS simulator for 16-d0xxx shows a 2021-06-16 build-era date. | End of extended support Paid extended support ends; after this there is no manufacturer support at all. |
June 30, 2025
Estimate
Applies only to the 2021 AMD model 16-e0000 (products 494P5PA / 2V8Z7AV). Third-party date from an HP Authorised / Power Services Gold Partner EOSL table (no more parts, BIOS/firmware/driver or service support, Care Packs closed). No equivalent date exists for the Intel 16-d0000, and HP publishes no Source ↗ |
Dates not listed haven't been published by the manufacturer or a reliable third party.
RAM (memory)
Your Victus has two accessible 260-pin DDR4 SO-DIMM sockets and no memory soldered to the board, so you can replace both modules or just add one. HP and Kingston document 16 GB per slot and 32 GB total (2x 16 GB). Reports of 2x 32 GB (64 GB) working circulate in the community, but they are unofficial and not backed by HP — verify against your own BIOS revision before buying 32 GB modules. Buy DDR4 SO-DIMMs rated CL22 at 1.2 V, non-ECC and unbuffered; ECC and registered modules are not supported. On i5-11260H and i5-11400H models the memory controller runs at 2933 MT/s, so 3200 MT/s modules will work but simply downclock. Matched pairs give you dual-channel performance. Buying tip: a matched 2x kit is the simplest upgrade, and sticking to 16 GB modules keeps you on solid, officially supported ground.
Buying tips
- DDR4 SO-DIMM, CL22, 1.2 V, non-ECC, unbuffered
- 2x 16 GB is the documented maximum — 32 GB modules are a community-only gamble
- Matched pairs for dual-channel; 3200 MT/s modules are fine everywhere and downclock on i5 models

Storage (SSD)
There are two M.2 2280 NVMe slots and no 2.5-inch bay or SATA connector of any kind, so plan for NVMe capacity only. On the Intel 16-d0000 the primary slot is PCIe Gen 4 x4 and the second is Gen 3 x4, so put your boot drive in the Gen 4 slot; a Gen 4 drive in the second slot works but runs at Gen 3 speeds. AMD 16-e0000 models are Gen 4. Use single-sided (single-chip) 2280 drives — double-sided drives may not clear the retention height. HP's own configurations top out at 1 TB per drive, but larger drives are widely reported to work, again unofficially. RAID 0 was a factory option, and the chassis also has a full-size SD card slot if you want cheap extra space for media. One vendor's listing mentions Gen 5 SSD compatibility — ignore that, the platform is Gen 4 at best.
Buying tips
- Any single-sided M.2 2280 NVMe drive
- Boot drive in the Gen 4 slot on Intel models
- Bigger than 1 TB is fine in practice, but unofficial — check your BIOS first

How to upgrade
Before you start
- Check your exact model suffix (16-d0000 or 16-e0000) so you buy DDR4 parts.
- Back up your data.
- Power off the laptop and unplug the charger.
- Ground yourself before touching components.
- Open the case — RAM and storage access requires removing the bottom panel, and the service guide describes a battery-disconnect procedure for full access. Follow the HP owner's or service manual for exact disassembly steps.
- Install the new part, then close the case and reconnect anything you disconnected.
- Power on and check that the BIOS/firmware sees the new memory or drive.
Steps
- Back up your data
Before anything else. - Power off and unplug
Fully shut down and remove the charger. - Ground yourself
Avoid static discharge on the memory and SSD. - Open the case
Remove the bottom panel; see the HP manual for the exact screws and any battery-disconnect step. - Install
Fit the SO-DIMM in its slot or the single-sided M.2 2280 drive in a free slot. - Close up and verify
Reassemble, then boot and check the BIOS shows the new capacity.
Good to know
- The biggest trap is model confusion: the 2021 16-d0000/16-e0000 use DDR4, the 2022 16-e1000 uses DDR5, and the 2022 16-d1000 is 12th-gen Intel.
- Opening the case and disconnecting the battery may affect warranty terms in your region — check before you start.
Frequently asked questions
How much RAM can the HP Victus 16 (2021) take?
HP and Kingston document a maximum of 32 GB total — 2x 16 GB DDR4 SO-DIMMs, one in each of the two slots. 64 GB (2x 32 GB) has been reported by owners but is unofficial and not warranty-backed.
Does the HP Victus 16 (2021) support DDR5?
No — the 2021 16-d0000 and 16-e0000 machines use DDR4. The visually identical 2022 16-e1000 uses DDR5, so check your model suffix before buying. DDR4 and DDR5 modules are not interchangeable.
Can I upgrade the CPU in my HP Victus 16?
No. The processor is soldered to the motherboard (BGA) on both the Intel and AMD versions, and the GPU is not upgradeable either. The CPU you bought is the CPU you keep.
Can I add a second SSD to the HP Victus 16?
Yes. There are two M.2 2280 NVMe slots and no 2.5-inch SATA bay. On Intel models the primary slot is Gen 4 x4 and the second is Gen 3 x4; on AMD models both are Gen 4.
Can I put a 2 TB or 4 TB SSD in the HP Victus 16?
HP's configurations top out at 1 TB per drive, but larger single-sided NVMe drives are widely reported to work. That's unofficial, so check your BIOS revision and return policy before committing to a large drive.
What speed RAM does the HP Victus 16 (2021) use?
DDR4-3200 CL22 on most models. On i5-11260H and i5-11400H systems the memory controller is limited to 2933 MT/s, so 3200 MT/s modules work but run at 2933. Sources disagree on the headline speed because of this; both are correct.
