Dell XPS 8960 upgrades
Released 2023 · on sale
Dell XPS Desktop 8960 (173 x 372.9 x 426.9 mm chassis). No soldered memory - both DIMM slots are free; CPU is socketed, so no BGA note applies. Chassis, PSU (up to ~750 W Platinum) and SATA cabling are proprietary: large modern GPUs may need adapter cables and clearance checks. The x16 GPU slot is Gen5; the two PCIe x4 slots and both M.2 slots are Gen3/Gen4. Upgrades generally do not void the warranty, but damage they cause is not covered.

2x DDR5 UDIMM slots, 64 GB max, 4800/5600 MT/s 2 × DDR5 U.2 · up to 64 GB total · 5600 MT/s
Two socketed DDR5 UDIMM slots, no soldered RAM. 64 GB (2x32 GB) is a hard ceiling. Non-ECC unbuffered only - ECC/RDIMM will not work. 5600 MT/s only with 14th-Gen Core; 13th-Gen systems run everything at 4800 MT/s. XMP/overclocking generally limited to K-series SKUs.

2x M.2 2230/2280 NVMe Gen4 + 2x 3.5in SATA bays 4 × SSD / HDD M.2 2230 / M.2 2280 / 2.5" / 3.5" (NVMe / SATA) · up to 12 TB
Two M.2 slots (2230 or 2280) on PCIe Gen4 x4 - do not expect Gen5 speeds. Plus two 3.5in SATA bays (Dell-validated 2 TB each); a 2.5in conversion kit bought from Dell lets one bay take two 2.5in drives. Brackets/cabling are proprietary. Dell-validated caps (4 TB per M.2 2280, 2 TB per HDD, 12 TB total) reflect Dell's list, not a proven controller limit; larger drives are unvalidated. M.2 is always the boot drive; board has 3 SATA ports.

LGA1700, 13th/14th-Gen Intel Core, 125 W max LGA1700 · Core 13th gen, Core 14th gen · max 125 W
Socketed LGA1700 (Z690 chipset), user-replaceable in principle, but Dell only validates the SKUs it ships - verify your service tag and BIOS before buying. Supported: 13th-Gen (i5-13400 to i9-13900K/KF) and 14th-Gen (i5-14600, i7-14700, KF variants). Max 125 W (K-series); OEM cooling and BIOS power limits cap sustained boost. K-series CPU required for BIOS overclocking.
