Dell Inspiron 15 3511 upgrade guide
Updated Oct. 30, 2026 · Written from this device's verified specifications
The Dell Inspiron 15 3511 (also sold as the Inspiron 15 3000 3511 or i3511) is a friendly machine to upgrade in two ways: memory and storage. The processor, unfortunately, is not one of them. Below we cover what fits, the limits Dell documents, and the traps worth knowing about before you buy a part. Where Dell's own documents are vague or contradict themselves, we say so.
At a glance
- Two DDR4 SO-DIMM slots; 16 GB is the officially supported maximum.
- One M.2 2230/2280 NVMe slot (Gen3 x4) plus, on some configurations, a 2.5-inch SATA bay.
- The 2.5-inch bay is missing in laptops with the 54 Whr battery - check before buying a SATA drive.
- The CPU is soldered and cannot be upgraded.

Memory (RAM)
Two DDR4 SO-DIMM slots, no soldered-on-board memory. Dell lists 4 GB, 8 GB and 16 GB modules per slot, with 4 GB, 8 GB, 12 GB (4+8) and 16 GB as supported totals. Standard unbuffered, non-ECC DDR4 SO-DIMMs are what you want; this is a consumer platform and no ECC or registered memory option appears in Dell's specification tables.
Buying tips
- A matched 2x8 GB pair gets you the official 16 GB maximum with proper dual-channel behaviour.
- 2666 MHz modules are the natural fit. DDR4-3200 modules will work but run down-clocked to 2666 MHz here.
- Mixing sizes (4+8 = 12 GB) is valid but asymmetric, so you give up some dual-channel benefit.

Storage
Dell describes one of three setups: a single 2.5-inch SATA drive, a single M.2 SSD, or both together. The M.2 slot takes a 2230 or 2280 NVMe drive and is PCIe NVMe Gen3 x4 only - Dell lists no SATA-protocol M.2 drive for it. Dell validates up to 1 TB in the 2230 size and up to 2 TB in 2280 and 2.5-inch sizes; a larger 2230 drive is outside Dell's validated spec rather than a documented controller limit. Dell doesn't document a thickness limit for 2.5-inch drives, so measure the space before ordering.
Buying tips
- The 2.5-inch bay does not exist in laptops with the 54 Whr battery - there is no bracket or cable. Confirm yours has the bay before buying a SATA drive.
- The second M.2 2230 slot is Key E and belongs to the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth card. It is not a storage slot, and the SD 3.0 card reader is for removable media only.
- Intel Optane H20 (32 GB with a 512 GB SSD) is supported only in configurations with 11th-gen processors. Dell's documentation mentions H10 in one place and H20 in the tables and product pages; the newer references consistently say H20.

How to upgrade
Before you start
- Step 1 - Back up your data. Storage changes especially can mean reinstalling or cloning the operating system.
- Step 2 - Shut the laptop down fully and unplug the charger.
- Step 3 - Ground yourself and use an anti-static strap or touch a grounded metal surface before handling components.
- Step 4 - Open the case. For the exact screw positions and disassembly order for your unit, use Dell's service manual or owner's manual for the Inspiron 15 3511.
- Step 5 - Install the memory module or drive, seating it firmly and evenly.
- Step 6 - Close the case and reconnect the charger.
- Step 7 - Power on and check that the BIOS/firmware sees the part - the memory total should be correct and the new drive should appear in the storage ports. If the part isn't detected, reseat it and check the manual again.
Steps
- Planning a clean install or cloning?
One device-specific setting matters here: 'SATA/NVMe Operation' in the BIOS defaults to RAID On (Intel RST). If you intend to do a clean Windows install, clone your drive, or install Linux, switch it to AHCI first. Changing that mode after Windows has been installed in RST mode can cause boot failure unless the registry is prepared in advance. Dell also has the M.2 and SATA ports enabled by default and S.M.A.R.T. reporting turned off by default. - Which drive boots?
If you install both an M.2 drive and a 2.5-inch drive, the M.2 SSD (or Optane module) becomes the primary, bootable drive. With only one drive installed, that drive is primary.
Good to know
- Dell's memory table lists 16 GB modules per slot but states a 16 GB maximum configuration; 32 GB is unvalidated.
- The 2.5-inch drive bay is absent in laptops with the 54 Whr battery.
- Dell's documents don't specify a maximum thickness for 2.5-inch drives.
- Dell's storage documentation mentions Intel Optane H10 in text while the tables and product pages say H20.
Frequently asked questions
How much RAM can the Dell Inspiron 15 3511 take?
16 GB is the officially supported maximum, in configurations such as 2x8 GB. Dell's spec table also lists 16 GB modules per slot while capping the total at 16 GB, so 2x16 GB (32 GB) is outside Dell's validated spec - treat it as unsupported and unverified.
Does the Inspiron 3511 support 3200 MHz RAM?
Faster modules generally work, but the memory runs at 2666 MHz in this chassis. Dell's 3200 MHz figure is tied to discrete graphics, and every 3511 CPU uses integrated graphics only.
Can I add a second SSD or a 2.5-inch hard drive?
Only if your configuration has the 2.5-inch bay. Laptops with the 54 Whr battery have no bracket or cable for a 2.5-inch drive, so check inside before buying one. The M.2 slot supports one NVMe SSD.
Does the Inspiron 3511 support NVMe and M.2 SATA drives?
The M.2 slot is NVMe Gen3 x4 only. Dell lists no SATA-protocol M.2 drive for it. The second M.2 2230 slot is for the wireless card.
Can I upgrade the CPU in the Inspiron 3511?
No. The processor is soldered to the board and Dell's documents name no socket. There is no CPU upgrade path.
Does the Inspiron 3511 support Intel Optane?
Intel Optane H20 is supported in configurations with 11th-gen processors only. Dell's documentation is inconsistent on the name (H10 versus H20); the newer tables and product pages say H20.
