Dell G15 5530 upgrade guide: RAM, storage and CPU
Updated Oct. 11, 2026 · Written from this device's verified specifications
The Dell G15 5530 (also sold as the Dell G15 Gaming Laptop 5530 or Dell G15 2023) is friendly to two upgrades: memory and storage. The processor is fixed at purchase, so if you were hoping for a CPU swap, this guide will tell you why that won't happen and what to do instead. Here is what fits, the limits to watch, and how to install safely.

RAM: two DDR5 SO-DIMM slots, 32 GB maximum
The G15 5530 has two SO-DIMM slots on the system board, and nothing is soldered — all of the memory lives in those two slots. They take DDR5 SO-DIMMs (laptop modules), unbuffered and non-ECC, running at 4800 MT/s. Dell validates up to 16 GB per module and 32 GB total, which is 2 x 16 GB in dual channel.
Dell requires BIOS version 1.6.0 or later for memory upgrades, so update the BIOS before you install anything. Dell also recommends matching modules: same capacity and speed in both slots. That keeps dual-channel mode reliable and avoids compatibility issues.
One money-saving point: the platform caps memory speed at 4800 MT/s. Faster DDR5 modules (5600 MT/s and above) will simply run at 4800, so don't pay extra for speed you won't get. Equally, 32 GB is Dell's validated ceiling — larger modules such as 2 x 24 GB or 2 x 32 GB are untested and unsupported by Dell. They may work, but you'd be on your own if they don't.
Buying tips
- Buy DDR5-4800 SO-DIMMs, not desktop DIMMs and not DDR4.
- A matched 2 x 16 GB kit gives you the validated maximum with dual channel.
- Faster modules are fine but will run at 4800 MT/s — don't pay a premium for clock speed.
- Update the BIOS to 1.6.0 or later before fitting new memory.

Storage: two M.2 NVMe Gen4 slots, no 2.5-inch bay
There are two M.2 slots on the system board, next to the left-hand fan. Both accept M-key PCIe NVMe Gen4 x4 drives in either 2230 or 2280 length. SATA M.2 drives are not supported, and there is no 2.5-inch bay at all, so a SATA SSD or hard drive won't fit inside this laptop.
Dell validates up to 1 TB for an M.2 2230 drive and up to 2 TB for an M.2 2280 drive. Larger drives usually work in practice, but they are unsupported, so treat that as use-at-your-own-risk. Your machine may have shipped with one drive or two, in either length — check which slots are already populated before buying a second drive. The primary drive sits in SSD slot 1.
If you're installing a drive in slot 2 yourself, Dell recommends M.2 2280 fitted with Dell's thermal shield. A 2230 drive in slot 2 is treated as a factory-only option in Dell's guidance. Also note that if you enable Intel VMD in BIOS setup, devices map under the VMD controller and you'll need Intel RST drivers in Windows (or kernel VMD support in Linux) for the system to boot.
One related note: this model has no SD or microSD card reader, so plan on an external reader or drive if you need one.
Buying tips
- Get a PCIe NVMe Gen4 x4 M-key drive — SATA M.2 drives won't work here.
- Prefer M.2 2280 for a second drive, and get Dell's thermal shield for slot 2.
- Dell validates 1 TB (2230) and 2 TB (2280); bigger drives generally work but are unsupported.
- If you turn on Intel VMD, have the Intel RST driver ready before you boot.

How to upgrade
Before you start
- Back up anything important before opening the case.
- Update the BIOS first if you're adding RAM — version 1.6.0 or later is required.
- Shut down the laptop completely, unplug the charger and remove any connected devices.
- Ground yourself to avoid static damage — touch a grounded metal object or use an anti-static strap.
- Open the case following the owner's manual for this model. Exact disassembly steps (screws, latches, panel removal) are documented there and vary by unit.
- Install the new module or drive firmly in its slot, then close the case.
- Power on and check that the BIOS/firmware recognises the new part before booting into your operating system.
Steps
- RAM
Update the BIOS to 1.6.0 or later first. Then: back up, power off, unplug, ground yourself and open the case per the owner's manual. Seat matched DDR5-4800 SO-DIMMs in both slots, close up, and confirm in the BIOS that the full capacity is detected. - Storage
Back up, power off, unplug, ground yourself and open the case per the owner's manual. Fit a PCIe NVMe Gen4 M-key drive (M.2 2280 recommended for slot 2, with Dell's thermal shield), close up, and check the BIOS sees the drive. If you enabled Intel VMD, install the Intel RST driver before relying on the drive to boot. - CPU
There is nothing to install. The processor is soldered to the system board and cannot be replaced or upgraded.
Good to know
- Dell validates 32 GB of RAM as the maximum; larger modules are unsupported.
- Drive sizes above 1 TB (2230) and 2 TB (2280) are unsupported, though larger drives usually work.
- Ship configurations vary — check which RAM and SSD slots are already populated before buying.
Frequently asked questions
How much RAM can the Dell G15 5530 take?
32 GB total, as 2 x 16 GB DDR5-4800 SO-DIMMs across the two slots. Larger modules are untested and unsupported by Dell.
Does the Dell G15 5530 support DDR4?
No. It uses DDR5 SO-DIMMs at 4800 MT/s. Desktop DIMMs and DDR4 modules will not fit or work.
Does it have a 2.5-inch bay or SATA support?
No. There is no 2.5-inch bay and SATA M.2 drives are not supported — only PCIe NVMe Gen4 x4 M.2 drives (2230 or 2280) in the two slots.
Can I upgrade the CPU in the Dell G15 5530?
No. The 13th-Gen HX processor is soldered to the board, so the CPU tier is fixed at purchase. The processor you bought is the one you keep.
Do I need a BIOS update before adding RAM?
Yes. Dell requires BIOS version 1.6.0 or later for memory upgrades, so update before installing new modules.
Can I fit a bigger SSD than 2 TB?
Possibly. Dell validates up to 1 TB per M.2 2230 slot and 2 TB per M.2 2280 slot. Larger drives generally work, but Dell does not support them, so it's a use-at-your-own-risk upgrade.
