Biostar B450MH upgrade guide
Updated Oct. 25, 2026 · Written from this device's verified specifications
The Biostar B450MH is a micro-ATX AM4 motherboard (197.54 x 243.95 mm) with nothing soldered down: memory, storage and the processor are all socketed or slotted, so you can upgrade all three. This guide covers what fits, the limits worth knowing before you order, and a safe installation routine.

RAM: 2 DDR4 slots, dual channel
The board has two desktop DDR4 DIMM slots running in dual channel. DDR4 only - DDR3 or DDR5 modules will not fit. The memory must be non-ECC and unbuffered; ECC and registered server memory will not work.
Speeds listed are 1866, 2133, 2400, 2666 and 2933 MT/s, with 3200 MT/s available as an overclock (XMP/DOCP profile). Whether 3200 actually runs depends on your processor's memory controller, the modules and how many you install, so faster sticks may clock down.
Capacity is where Biostar's own documents disagree. Its spec sheets say up to 64 GB (2x32 GB modules), while the printed user manual and Kingston's compatibility page both say 32 GB maximum using 8 GB and 16 GB modules. The likely explanation is a later BIOS/AGESA update added 32 GB module support, so treat 64 GB (2x32 GB) as achievable with a current BIOS but verify, and 32 GB (2x16 GB) as the guaranteed baseline. The same kind of silent revision has already affected other specs on this board, so check before you spend.
Because there are only two slots, buy all the capacity you will ever want in one matched kit - a pair of identical sticks. Adding a second, different kit later risks compatibility problems and leaves you with no free slots.
Buying tips: pick a matched dual-module kit from a memory vendor's compatibility list for this board; don't mix kits, speeds or sizes; and don't pay extra for ECC or registered memory.
Buying tips
- Matched pair in one kit - you have only 2 slots
- Non-ECC unbuffered DDR4 desktop DIMMs only
- Check that your CPU supports the speed you want

Storage: 4 SATA ports plus one M.2 slot
There are four SATA III (6 Gb/s) ports with AHCI and RAID 0/1/10 support for 2.5-inch SSDs and 3.5-inch hard drives. How many drives you can physically mount is decided by your case, not the motherboard.
The single M.2 slot (M key) accepts either an NVMe SSD at up to PCIe 3.0 x4 (32 Gb/s) or a SATA SSD. Two caveats before buying. First, the officially listed M.2 lengths (2242/2260/2280) don't appear on Biostar's spec pages, so confirm the mounting points against the manual or the silkscreen on the board itself. Second, if you're running one of the older Bristol Ridge A-series APUs, the M.2 slot supports SATA SSDs only - full NVMe speeds need a Ryzen or newer APU.
It's also worth checking whether populating the M.2 slot disables one of the SATA ports. Biostar's documentation doesn't say either way, and some B450 boards do share bandwidth this way. If you plan to use all four SATA ports along with an M.2 drive, check the manual and BIOS notes first.
Buying tips: an NVMe drive gets you the biggest speed jump for general use; pick 2280 length unless the board markings say otherwise; and leave a SATA port free in your plan until you've confirmed the M.2/SATA sharing behaviour.
Buying tips
- NVMe (PCIe 3.0 x4) or SATA SSD in the M.2 slot
- Confirm 2242/2260/2280 mounting points on the board
- Old Bristol Ridge APUs limit M.2 to SATA SSDs

CPU: Socket AM4, up to 105 W
The B450MH has one socketed AM4 processor socket with a maximum CPU TDP of 105 W. Biostar lists support for 1st, 2nd and 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen, Ryzen processors with Radeon Vega Graphics, Athlon with Radeon Vega Graphics, and the older A-series APUs (Bristol Ridge) noted in the manual.
The practical limitation is BIOS age. Third Gen (Ryzen 3000) support usually needs a BIOS update first, and if the board ships with older firmware and you have no earlier AM4 CPU to boot with, that can leave you stuck. Ryzen 5000 (Vermeer) support isn't promised in the quoted specifications at all - verify Biostar's current BIOS and CPU support list for your exact board revision before buying a newer chip.
Always cross-check your chosen model on Biostar's CPU support list, which pairs each processor with the minimum BIOS version. Choose a cooler within the board's 105 W TDP limit and make sure it fits your case and memory height.
One bandwidth note for gamers: the spec sheets say the PCIe x16 slot runs at x8 speeds when using an APU, while the user manual says it drops to x8 with an APU or CPU. The sources disagree; in practice this matters little for mid-range graphics cards. With an APU, the HDMI and VGA outputs on the rear panel are what you'll use for video.
Buying tips
- Check Biostar's CPU support list for the minimum BIOS version
- Plan for a BIOS update before a Ryzen 3000 install
- Stay at or below 105 W TDP

Installation: a safe general routine
1. Back up anything important before you start.
2. Shut down the computer, switch the PSU off and unplug the power cable.
3. Ground yourself - touch the metal chassis - and work on a non-conductive surface.
4. Open the case. Follow your owner's manual for the exact panel removal and mounting details for this board.
5. Install the part. For a CPU upgrade, update the BIOS first if the processor requires a newer version, and take care with the socket pins.
6. Close the case, reconnect the cables and power on.
7. Enter the BIOS to confirm it detects the new memory, drive or processor, then save and exit. Enable XMP/DOCP if you want rated memory speeds.

Good to know
- Biostar's spec sheets and the user manual disagree on maximum RAM (64 GB vs 32 GB).
- The spec sheets and manual disagree on when the PCIe x16 slot drops to x8 speeds.
- M.2 lengths aren't confirmed on Biostar's spec pages; check the manual or board silkscreen.
- Differing audio codec listings (ALC887 vs ALC897) suggest a silent board revision.
Frequently asked questions
How much RAM can the Biostar B450MH take?
Biostar's spec sheets say up to 64 GB (2x32 GB), while the user manual and Kingston both state 32 GB (2x16 GB). The 64 GB figure likely depends on a newer BIOS, so treat 32 GB as the guaranteed baseline and verify with your BIOS version before buying 32 GB modules.
Does the B450MH support ECC memory?
No. It requires non-ECC, unbuffered DDR4 desktop DIMMs. ECC and registered server memory will not work.
Does the B450MH support NVMe SSDs?
Yes. Its M.2 slot (M key) supports NVMe SSDs at up to PCIe 3.0 x4 (32 Gb/s) as well as SATA SSDs. With an older Bristol Ridge A-series APU the slot is limited to SATA SSDs.
Does using the M.2 slot disable a SATA port?
We can't say for certain. Biostar's documentation doesn't clarify this, and some B450 boards do share bandwidth between M.2 and SATA. If you need all four SATA ports, check the manual and BIOS notes before planning your drive layout.
Does the B450MH support Ryzen 5000?
Not in the specifications quoted by Biostar, which cover 1st, 2nd and 3rd Gen Ryzen plus Athlon and A-series APUs. Check Biostar's current CPU support list and BIOS releases for your board revision before buying a Ryzen 5000 processor.
Do I need a BIOS update for a Ryzen 3000 CPU?
Usually yes - third Gen Ryzen support typically requires a BIOS flash first. If your board ships with older firmware and you have no earlier AM4 CPU available, that can be a problem. Check the CPU support list for the minimum BIOS version for your exact processor.
What RAM speed does the board support?
1866, 2133, 2400, 2666 and 2933 MT/s natively, with 3200 MT/s as an overclock (XMP/DOCP). The achievable speed depends on the processor's memory controller and the modules installed.
