ASUS ROG Strix G16 (2024) G614 upgrade guide: RAM, SSD and CPU

Updated Oct. 13, 2026 · Written from this device's verified specifications

The ROG Strix G16 (2024) G614 — covering the G614JI, G614JU and G614JV names as well as the 2024 G614JIR, G614JVR, G614JUR and G614JZR units — is one of the friendlier gaming laptops to upgrade. It has two free memory sockets and two M.2 SSD slots, all accessible from the bottom panel. The same chassis and slot layout applies across the 2023 and 2024 variants, so this advice works whichever one you own. The one thing you cannot change is the processor. Here is what fits, what the limits are, and what to watch out for before you buy.

At a glance

  • 2x DDR5 SO-DIMM sockets, both free (no soldered RAM), dual-channel
  • 2x M.2 2280 NVMe SSD slots, PCIe Gen4 x4
  • Only single-sided M.2 SSDs physically fit
  • CPU is soldered — no upgrade path

RAM

The G614 has two DDR5 SO-DIMM slots, and there is no soldered memory — both sockets are standard removable modules, so whatever the machine shipped with can be swapped out completely. The slots are dual-channel, and the memory is ordinary non-ECC, unbuffered DDR5 with 262-pin SO-DIMM connectors. The one purchase mistake to avoid: this laptop takes laptop SO-DIMM modules, not the longer desktop DIMM sticks. DDR5 desktop kits are easy to confuse with laptop kits, so check the listing says SO-DIMM.

Speed is rated at DDR5-5600, but don't treat that as a guarantee. ASUS notes that memory speed varies by CPU specification and that some units run only 5200 MT/s, and in any case modules clock down to whatever speed the CPU supports. Buying faster-rated memory gains you little here; matched DDR5-5600 SO-DIMMs are the sweet spot.

Capacity is where ASUS's own documents disagree. Most ASUS spec pages state a maximum of 32 GB, while some regional pages give a maximum capacity of 64 GB, and Kingston validates the machine at 64 GB using two 32 GB modules. Our reading: 2x 32 GB (64 GB total) should work, but if you want to stay strictly inside the most commonly quoted official limit, stop at 32 GB. Per module, 32 GB sticks are the validated ceiling (Kingston lists 8, 16 and 32 GB modules).

Buying tips: order a matched pair of identical modules and install them together — Kingston explicitly says modules must be ordered and installed in pairs, which is also what keeps you in full dual-channel mode. Mixed sizes work but give you partial dual-channel. Factory configurations seen are 8, 16 and 32 GB, so if your machine has a single stick or a small kit, a matched 2x 16 GB or 2x 32 GB kit is a clean replacement.

Buying tips

  • DDR5 SO-DIMM only — never desktop DIMM
  • Matched pair, installed together, for dual-channel
  • DDR5-5600 rated; expect 5200 MT/s on some units
  • 2x 32 GB (64 GB) validated by Kingston; ASUS often quotes 32 GB max

Storage

There are two M.2 2280 slots (22 x 80 mm) using NVMe over PCIe Gen4 x4, which ASUS says can push around 7000 MB/s. That means you can add a second drive for games and files, or replace the boot drive with a larger one. ASUS states it validates and configures up to 2 TB per slot. Larger single-sided drives such as 4 TB generally work in practice, but they are not validated by ASUS, so buy them knowing that.

The single most important gotcha on this laptop: only single-sided M.2 SSDs fit. Surface-mounted components next to the motherboard's M.2 slot block double-sided drives (those with memory chips on both faces of the board). Before you buy, confirm the drive is a single-sided design — many high-capacity drives are double-sided, and the listing does not always say. If in doubt, check the manufacturer's product page or drawings.

There is no fallback here. The G614 chassis has no 2.5-inch bay, no SATA connector and no memory card reader, so every drive must be an NVMe M.2 2280 SSD. ASUS does not state a minimum drive generation, so older Gen3 drives should also work, just more slowly.

Buying tips

  • Single-sided M.2 SSDs only — double-sided drives will not fit
  • M.2 2280 NVMe; PCIe Gen4 x4 for full speed
  • 2 TB per slot is what ASUS validates; 4 TB single-sided usually works unvalidated
  • No 2.5-inch or SATA option exists on this chassis

How to upgrade

Before you start

  • Back up your data first
  • Power off and unplug the AC adapter
  • Ground yourself against static
  • Keep original parts and check regional warranty terms
  • Use the official service manual for exact teardown steps

Steps

  1. 1. Back up
Back up anything important before opening the case.
  2. 2. Power off and unplug
Shut down fully, unplug the AC adapter and remove peripherals.
  3. 3. Ground yourself
Touch grounded metal or use an anti-static strap to protect the modules and drives.
  4. 4. Open the case
Open the bottom panel following ASUS's official service manual; opening it for upgrades generally does not void the warranty, but keep original parts and check regional ASUS terms.
  5. 5. Install the part
Fit the matched DDR5 SO-DIMM pair or the single-sided M.2 2280 SSD as the manual shows.
  6. 6. Close and power on
Reassemble, reconnect power and boot up.
  7. 7. Verify in BIOS/firmware
Confirm the BIOS/firmware sees the new part and the full capacity appears in the operating system; apply any ASUS firmware updates recommended for your model.

Good to know

  • ASUS's spec pages conflict on maximum RAM (32 GB vs 64 GB); Kingston validates 64 GB.
  • DDR5-5600 is the rating, but some units run memory at only 5200 MT/s depending on CPU.
  • ASUS validates up to 2 TB per M.2 slot; 4 TB single-sided drives generally work but are unvalidated.
  • Double-sided M.2 SSDs will not fit due to surface-mounted components near the slot.

Frequently asked questions

How much RAM can the ROG Strix G16 (2024) G614 take?

ASUS's own spec pages disagree: most list 32 GB as the maximum, while some regional pages give a maximum capacity of 64 GB, and Kingston validates 64 GB using two 32 GB SO-DIMM modules. Our reading is that 2x 32 GB should work, but 32 GB is the most commonly quoted official limit. There are two slots and no soldered memory.

Does the ROG Strix G16 G614 support DDR4 RAM?

No. The two slots take DDR5 SO-DIMM modules (262-pin, non-ECC, unbuffered), rated at DDR5-5600. Note that these are laptop SO-DIMMs, not desktop DIMMs, and some units run the memory at only 5200 MT/s depending on the CPU.

Can I add a second SSD to the ROG Strix G16 G614?

Yes. There are two M.2 2280 NVMe slots using PCIe Gen4 x4, so you can add a second drive or swap the boot drive. The critical limit is that only single-sided SSDs fit — surface-mounted components near the slot block double-sided drives. ASUS validates up to 2 TB per slot; larger single-sided drives such as 4 TB generally work but are unvalidated.

Does the ROG Strix G16 G614 have a 2.5-inch drive bay or SATA port?

No. The chassis has no 2.5-inch bay and no SATA connector — only the two M.2 NVMe slots. There is also no memory card reader.

Can I upgrade the CPU in the ROG Strix G16 G614?

No. The Intel Core HX processors (i9-14900HX on 2024 units, i9-13980HX or i7-13650HX on 2023 units) are soldered to the motherboard, so there is no socket and no CPU upgrade path.

Will opening my ROG Strix G16 G614 void the warranty?

Working from the bottom panel for upgrades generally does not void the warranty, but keep the original parts and check the ASUS terms that apply in your region. Use the official service manual for the correct teardown procedure.
