Acer Nitro 5 AN515-45 upgrade guide: RAM, SSD and CPU
Updated Oct. 18, 2026 · Written from this device's verified specifications
The Acer Nitro 5 AN515-45 (2021, Ryzen 5000 — model codes like AN515-45-R2HE, R9X1, R2NQ) is one of the friendlier gaming laptops to upgrade: both memory slots are free, and there are three drive bays. This guide tells you exactly what fits and what to watch out for before you buy. First, a warning about model names: the AN515-45 is the AMD Ryzen 5000 version. The AN515-44 (Ryzen 4000) and AN515-58 (12th-gen Intel) look similar but have different slots and limits, so check the full model number on the sticker underneath the laptop before ordering parts.

Memory (RAM)
The Nitro 5 AN515-45 has two SO-DIMM (260-pin) slots, and neither is soldered — whatever memory came with your machine sits in a socket you can replace. It takes DDR4 SO-DIMMs running at DDR4-3200 (PC4-25600), non-ECC and unbuffered, at 1.2 V. Faster modules won't hurt anything but will simply clock down, so there's no point paying extra for them.
The supported maximum is 32 GB total (two 16 GB modules), which is what Acer and Kingston both validate. LaptopMedia reports that 2 x 32 GB (64 GB) works in practice, and Cezanne's memory controller often handles it, but that is outside Acer's validated specification. If you want 64 GB, buy from a retailer with easy returns and confirm the laptop POSTs with both modules before committing to the upgrade. Treat 32 GB as the safe, guaranteed figure.
Buy your modules as a matched pair. Kingston specifically requires modules to be ordered and installed in pairs for dual-channel mode, and a single stick will run single-channel, which measurably costs you performance in games on a Ryzen laptop. If your machine shipped with 8 GB or 16 GB and you want to go to 32 GB, replacing both sticks with a matched kit is the cleanest route.
Buying tips: look for DDR4-3200 CL22 1.2 V non-ECC SO-DIMMs (specifications such as 1RX8 or 2RX8 are both fine). The exact Kingston part numbers in the configurator are partly discontinued, so any JEDEC-spec equivalent is fine — you don't need to hunt down a specific brand.
Buying tips
- DDR4-3200 (PC4-25600) SO-DIMM, 1.2 V, non-ECC, unbuffered
- Buy in matched pairs for dual-channel
- 16 GB per stick is the officially supported maximum per slot
Storage (SSD and HDD)
This laptop gives you three drive bays: two M.2 2280 slots and one 2.5-inch SATA bay. Both M.2 slots are PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe. A Gen4 NVMe drive will physically work, but it will run at Gen3 speed, so don't overpay for Gen4.
Note one quirk: only one of the two M.2 slots accepts a SATA M.2 drive as well as PCIe drives — the other is PCIe-only. If you're adding a SATA M.2 SSD, check the teardown to see which slot you're populating. For NVMe drives, either slot works.
The 2.5-inch bay takes a SATA hard drive or SSD, but the drive must be 7 mm thick; 15 mm drives will not fit. The SATA cable and bracket needed to use this bay reportedly ship in the box with the laptop, but this varies by SKU and region, and some configurations arrive with both M.2 slots populated and no cable. Open the case and check before buying a 2.5-inch drive, or you may find yourself ordering the cable separately.
Acer's spec sheet lists 256 GB to 1 TB SSDs and 1 TB or 2 TB hard drives, but those describe factory configurations rather than hard ceilings. There is no documented maximum drive capacity — 2 TB NVMe drives, and generally 4 TB drives, are known to work.
Buying tips: any M.2 2280 NVMe SSD fits; a Gen3 drive gets you everything the slot offers. For the 2.5-inch bay, pick a 7 mm SATA SSD or HDD, and verify you have the cable and bracket first.
Buying tips
- M.2 2280 NVMe (PCIe Gen3 x4) for either M.2 slot
- SATA M.2 drives only fit one of the two M.2 slots
- 2.5-inch drives must be 7 mm thick — 15 mm will not fit
- Check for the SATA cable/bracket before buying a 2.5-inch drive
How to upgrade
Before you start
- Back up anything important before opening the case.
- Shut the laptop down fully and unplug the charger.
- Ground yourself to avoid static damage to the components.
- Open the case following the owner's manual for your exact model — the disassembly steps, screws and any latches are described there and vary between Nitro 5 generations.
- Install the new part, close the case, plug in and power on.
- Check that the BIOS and firmware see the new memory or drive, then boot into your system to confirm it's recognised in the operating system too.
Steps
- Back up your data
Copy anything important off the machine before you start. Storage upgrades mean cloning or reinstalling, and even a simple RAM swap deserves a backup first. - Power down and unplug
Shut the laptop down completely — not sleep or hibernate — and unplug the charger. - Ground yourself
Discharge static before touching any components. Memory and SSDs are small, and static damage is invisible. - Open the case and install
Follow Acer's owner's manual for the exact disassembly procedure for your model, including any release latches or screws it describes. Seat the SO-DIMM or drive firmly in its slot as shown there. - Close up and power on
Refit the cover and any screws as the manual describes, then power on with the charger connected. - Verify in BIOS and firmware
Enter the BIOS to confirm the new memory or drive is detected, and update the BIOS/firmware if needed. Then check the part also appears in your operating system.
Good to know
- Sources disagree on maximum memory: Acer and Kingston validate 32 GB, while a teardown reports 64 GB working. Neither is wrong — 64 GB simply isn't officially supported.
- The SATA cable and bracket for the 2.5-inch bay are said to ship in the box, but this varies by SKU and region. Verify before buying a 2.5-inch drive.
Frequently asked questions
How much RAM can the Acer Nitro 5 AN515-45 take?
32 GB is the officially supported maximum (two 16 GB DDR4-3200 SO-DIMMs), as validated by Acer and Kingston. LaptopMedia reports that 64 GB (two 32 GB sticks) works in the field, but that's outside Acer's validated spec — buy from a seller with easy returns and verify the laptop POSTs if you want to try it.
Does the AN515-45 support 64 GB of RAM?
Possibly, but it isn't guaranteed. Acer's own documentation validates 32 GB only, while one teardown reports 2 x 32 GB working. The safest expectation is 32 GB; treat 64 GB as an experiment worth trying only with a good returns policy.
Can I upgrade the CPU in the Nitro 5 AN515-45?
No. The Ryzen 5 5600H, Ryzen 7 5800H and Ryzen 9 5900HX are soldered BGA (FP6) processors and cannot be replaced or upgraded. There is no CPU upgrade path for this model.
How many SSDs can I install in the AN515-45?
Three drives in total: two M.2 2280 slots (PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe) plus one 2.5-inch SATA bay. There's no documented maximum capacity — 2 TB NVMe drives and generally 4 TB drives work. Only one of the two M.2 slots also accepts SATA M.2 drives.
Does it support PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSDs?
A Gen4 drive will fit and work, but the M.2 slots are PCIe Gen3 x4, so it will run at Gen3 speed. A Gen3 drive gives you the same real-world speed for less.
Will any 2.5-inch hard drive or SSD fit?
It has to be 7 mm thick — 15 mm drives will not fit. Also check that your unit has the SATA cable and bracket; they're said to ship in the box but not in every SKU or region.
