Memory (RAM) upgrades
The DL365 Gen11 has 24 DIMM slots, 12 per processor, with one DIMM per channel. All memory is socketed; nothing is soldered. If your server has only one CPU, only that CPU's 12 slots can be used.
The server takes DDR5 registered ECC DIMMs (full-size RDIMMs, not laptop SO-DIMMs). Only HPE Smart Memory RDIMMs are supported. LRDIMMs and persistent memory are not. The largest module listed is 256 GB (3DS RDIMM), which gives a headline maximum of 6 TB (24 x 256 GB). The QuickSpecs also say that all processors support up to 3 TB of memory per server. The two figures conflict and the wording doesn't explain why, so confirm the limit in the full QuickSpecs before buying 256 GB modules.
Speed depends on your CPU. With 4th Gen AMD EPYC the memory runs at up to 4800 MT/s. With 5th Gen EPYC it runs at up to 6400 MT/s. Actual speed also depends on the memory type and configuration. The qualified kits are different parts for each CPU generation. For 4th Gen: 16 GB (P50309-B21), 32 GB (P50311-B21), 64 GB (P50312-B21), 96 GB (P66676-B21), 128 GB (P69982-B21) and 256 GB octal-rank (P50314-B21). For 5th Gen: 16 GB (P64984-B21), 32 GB (P64985-B21), 64 GB (P64986-B21), 96 GB (P64987-B21), 128 GB (P64988-B21) and 256 GB quad-rank (P73446-B21).
Conseils d'achat
- Check which EPYC generation is installed first, then buy the kit made for that generation.
- Buy HPE Smart Memory part numbers only; HPE warns that compatibility can vary by configuration.
- Don't buy UDIMM, LRDIMM or persistent memory; none of them work here.
- Verify the 3 TB versus 6 TB question before ordering 256 GB modules.
- Match DIMMs across the two CPUs' banks if you have two CPUs, so each CPU has its own memory.
Storage (drive) upgrades
The standard model has 8 front SFF (2.5-inch) bays that accept SAS, SATA or NVMe drives. An optional extra 2-drive SAS/SATA or NVMe cage can be added, but only as a factory-configured (CTO) option. The GPU model has 4 SFF bays instead. An EDSFF chassis variant also exists, but its bay count isn't documented in the material we have. Check which layout your server has before shopping.
Drives are driven by HPE Tri-Mode controllers, and some options need extra controller or cabling kits, so a drive that physically fits may still not work without the right controller. The maximum drive thickness isn't stated. NVMe link speed per bay isn't stated either, although the server has PCIe Gen5 I/O.
The QuickSpecs list capacity examples for an 8+2 (ten-drive) setup, such as 10 x 7.68 TB SATA SSD or 10 x 7.68 TB NVMe U.3 SSD (76.8 TB), and up to 153.6 TB (10 x 15.36 TB). The table is hard to read, so the drive type behind the largest figure is unclear. We found no 3.5-inch bays. We also found no information on M.2 slots or an internal boot module, so check the full QuickSpecs if you were hoping to add a separate boot drive. An optional 9.5 mm SATA DVD drive exists only on 8 SFF CTO servers.
Conseils d'achat
- Count your bays and check the SKU (8 SFF, EDSFF or 4 SFF GPU) before buying.
- Confirm your controller supports the interface (SAS, SATA or NVMe) of the drive you want.
- Don't assume spare bays work with NVMe; they may need extra cabling kits.
- Look up M.2 or boot-module options in the full QuickSpecs before buying one.
- Buy drives that HPE lists as supported for this server rather than generic drives.

Comment mettre à niveau
Avant de commencer
- Find out which model variant you have: 8 SFF, EDSFF, or 4 SFF GPU. Bay layout and available options differ.
- Check how many CPUs are installed and which EPYC generation (4th or 5th Gen). This decides how many DIMM slots work and what speed you get.
- Download the full QuickSpecs and the owner's manual for the exact part numbers and procedures.
- Back up your data and note your current BIOS and firmware versions.
- Check your warranty terms before fitting non-HPE parts. The warranty is listed as 3/3/3.
Étapes
- Back up and plan
Back up important data and configuration settings. Have your part numbers ready and check them against the QuickSpecs. - Power off and unplug
Shut the server down properly, then disconnect all power cables and other cables. Let it stand until you are sure it is fully powered down. - Ground yourself
Use an anti-static wrist strap or touch bare metal on the chassis before handling parts. Hold DIMMs and drives by their edges. - Open the server
Remove the server from the rack if needed and open the cover as the owner's manual describes. Exact disassembly steps are in HPE's user guide. - Install the new part
For memory, use the correct slots for the CPU that owns them and seat each DIMM firmly. For drives, use a supported bay and carrier, and check that the controller and cabling suit the drive type. - Close up and reconnect
Refit the cover, return the server to the rack if you removed it, and reconnect cables and power. - Check that it is recognized
Power on and check that the BIOS or firmware shows the new memory capacity or drive. If something is missing, power down and recheck seating, slot choice and cabling. Update firmware if the manual or HPE recommends it.
Bon à savoir
- Some third-party pages describe a one-socket, 12-slot version with EPYC 9004 only. HPE's own documents say up to two processors and 24 slots with 4th and 5th Gen EPYC. A one-CPU server uses only 12 slots.
- The 6 TB maximum and the 3 TB per-server note in the QuickSpecs disagree. Verify before buying 256 GB DIMMs.
- We couldn't read the contents of HPE's online memory option page, so confirm part numbers against the QuickSpecs.
- We have no list of supported CPU models, so a faster CPU is not covered here. Check the full QuickSpecs before buying one.
- M.2 and boot module options, EDSFF bay count and drive thickness limits were not found. Check the full QuickSpecs.
- Fan counts differ between HPE documents (5 versus 7), probably by variant. Don't assume your server matches either.
