HP EliteDesk 800 G6 Mini Desktop PC upgrade guide

Mis à jour le 31 octobre 2026 · Rédigé d'après les spécifications vérifiées de cet appareil

The HP EliteDesk 800 G6 Desktop Mini (800 G6 DM) is small, but it's more upgrade-friendly than it looks. The RAM is not soldered, the CPU is socketed and replaceable, and there are two M.2 slots for SSDs. Below we cover exactly what fits, the limits you need to know before you buy, and what to watch out for. Note that HP sold regional variants with different CPU and storage option lists, so the parts in your unit may differ from another owner's.

Memory (RAM)

The 800 G6 Mini has two user-accessible SO-DIMM slots (260-pin DDR4). Nothing is soldered, so both slots are yours to use. The modules must be unbuffered, non-ECC DDR4 SO-DIMMs; registered or server memory will not work.

The limit is 32 GB per module and 64 GB total in a 2x 32 GB configuration, which HP lists in its current specifications. One caution: HP's Hardware Reference Guide shows "Maximum memory 32," which contradicts the 64 GB figure in the QuickSpecs and HP Japan's spec sheet. We treat 64 GB as the supported total, since that matches the current documentation and the 2x 32 GB configuration HP lists.

Speed depends on your CPU: up to 2666 MT/s with Core i3/i5 and up to 2933 MT/s with Core i7/i9. DDR4-3200 SO-DIMMs are physically fine but will clock down to those rates, so don't pay extra for speed your machine can't use. For dual-channel mode, install matched modules of equal capacity in both slots — this matters because the integrated UHD 630 graphics share system memory.

Buying tips: look for DDR4 SO-DIMM kits sold as 2x modules of the same size, 2666 or 2933 MT/s, non-ECC and unbuffered. Bigger DDR4 SO-DIMM modules than 32 GB don't exist, so 64 GB is the practical ceiling.

Conseils d'achat

  • Buy a matched pair (2x modules) of equal capacity for dual-channel mode.
  • DDR4 SO-DIMM, non-ECC and unbuffered only.
  • 2666 or 2933 MT/s is plenty; 3200 MT/s modules will just run slower.
  • HP validates up to 2x 32 GB = 64 GB total.

Storage (SSD / HDD)

You get three storage positions in principle: two M.2 slots and one 2.5-inch SATA bay. Both M.2 slots are Key M, PCIe Gen 3.0 x4 (NVMe) and accept either 2280 or 2230 SSDs. A Gen 4 NVMe drive will work, but it runs at Gen 3 speeds — this platform doesn't offer Gen 4 bandwidth, despite some retail listings suggesting otherwise.

The big catch: the two M.2 slots and the 2.5-inch SATA bay are mutually exclusive. You can run 2x M.2 SSDs, or 1x M.2 plus 1x 2.5-inch SATA drive, but not both M.2 drives together with the SATA bay. The 2.5-inch position takes 7 mm-thick SATA drives and requires HP's DM SATA Drive Bracket, which is not included with M.2-only configurations.

HP validates a maximum of 2 TB per drive (M.2 NVMe SSD or 2.5-inch SATA). Larger third-party drives are widely reported to work, but HP does not validate anything above 2 TB, so treat bigger capacities as unconfirmed. Remember there's also an M.2 slot for Wi-Fi only — it is not a storage slot. And the Mini has no internal optical drive, no SD card reader and no PCIe expansion slots; the dock DVD writer is an external accessory.

Buying tips: for a simple speed upgrade, a single M.2 2280 NVMe SSD is the easiest fit. If you want a cheap bulk drive too, plan the combination before you buy — and pick up the SATA drive bracket if your unit shipped with M.2 storage only.

Conseils d'achat

  • M.2 NVMe 2280 or 2230, PCIe Gen 3.0 x4 — Gen 4 drives just run at Gen 3 speed.
  • Decide up front: 2x M.2, or 1x M.2 + 1x 2.5-inch SATA. Not all three at once.
  • 2.5-inch drives must be 7 mm thick and need the separate DM SATA Drive Bracket.
  • HP validates up to 2 TB per drive; larger drives are unconfirmed.

Processor (CPU)

Good news for tinkerers: the CPU is socketed (Intel LGA 1200) and replaceable, not soldered down. The limits are strict, though. Only 10th Gen "Comet Lake-S" processors are supported (Q470 platform). Chips from the 8th or 9th generation do not work despite the same socket family, and 11th Gen is not supported either. If you own an EliteDesk 800 G5 Mini, that's a different generation entirely — don't mix up the two.

The Mini chassis also caps the CPU at 35 W T-series parts. The 65 W and 125 W processors listed in HP's spec tables belong to the SFF, tower and AiO variants and are not supported in this chassis. Factory options run from the Core i3-10100T up to the Core i7-10700T, with the worldwide QuickSpecs additionally listing the Core i9-10900T (35 W). Availability differs by region: HP Japan's configurator tops out at the i7-10700T, so don't assume every chip was sold everywhere.

Buying tips: shop for a 10th Gen T-series chip (35 W) only. An i7-10700T or i9-10900T is the realistic top end for this machine, and if you want vPro, HP offered it on the i5, i7 and i9 parts. Check what your region's model shipped with before chasing a particular SKU, and confirm your BIOS/firmware is up to date after the swap so the new CPU is recognised properly.

Conseils d'achat

  • 10th Gen Comet Lake-S, 35 W T-series only — e.g. i5-10500T/10600T, i7-10700T, i9-10900T.
  • No 65 W or 125 W chips: they're for the bigger cases and aren't supported here.
  • No 8th/9th Gen and no 11th Gen, whatever the socket suggests.
  • Check regional availability; not every SKU was sold in every market.

How to do the upgrade safely

The outline below applies to any of the upgrades above. For the exact disassembly procedure for your unit, follow HP's owner's manual for the EliteDesk 800 G6 Desktop Mini.

1. Back up anything you care about before touching the hardware.
2. Shut the PC down fully and unplug the power cable and all attached cables.
3. Ground yourself (touch an earthed metal surface or use a wrist strap) before handling components.
4. Open the case as described in the owner's manual and set the screws aside safely.
5. Install the new RAM module, SSD or CPU, seating it correctly and gently — never force anything.
6. Close the case, reconnect the cables and power on.
7. Check in the BIOS/firmware that the new part is detected, and confirm the total RAM, storage drive or CPU model shown is what you installed.

Take it slowly, and if something doesn't seat easily, stop and re-check the orientation rather than pressing harder.

Conseils d'achat

  • Keep a small Phillips screwdriver and an anti-static strap handy.
  • Follow the owner's manual for the exact opening steps and screw locations.
  • Verify the new part in the BIOS after the first boot.

Comment mettre à niveau

Avant de commencer

  • HP sold regional variants of the 800 G6 DM with different CPU and storage option lists, so confirm your exact configuration first.
  • The Mini has no PCIe expansion slots, no SD card reader and no internal optical drive.
  • Tools and manuals: HP's owner's manual for the EliteDesk 800 G6 Desktop Mini describes the exact disassembly.

Bon à savoir

  • Regional variants differ in CPU and storage option lists, so check your exact model before buying.
  • HP's Hardware Reference Guide and current QuickSpecs disagree on maximum memory (32 GB vs 64 GB); we treat 64 GB (2x 32 GB) as supported.
  • One retailer lists "PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe" compatibility, but the platform provides PCIe Gen 3.0 x4 per M.2 slot; Gen 4 drives run at Gen 3 speed.
  • HP validates drives up to 2 TB; larger capacities are unconfirmed.
  • Don't confuse this model with the EliteDesk 800 G5 Mini — that's a different platform and takes different CPUs.

Foire aux questions

How much RAM can the HP EliteDesk 800 G6 Mini take?

Up to 64 GB total, using 2x 32 GB DDR4 SO-DIMMs (32 GB per module is the maximum). One source, HP's Hardware Reference Guide, shows "Maximum memory 32," which conflicts with the 64 GB in current HP specifications — we treat 64 GB as the supported total.

What RAM speed does the 800 G6 Mini support?

Up to 2666 MT/s with Core i3/i5 processors and up to 2933 MT/s with Core i7/i9. DDR4-3200 SO-DIMMs work but will clock down to those rates.

Does the EliteDesk 800 G6 Mini support NVMe SSDs?

Yes. Both M.2 slots are Key M, PCIe Gen 3.0 x4 (NVMe) and take 2230 or 2280 drives. Gen 4 SSDs work but run at Gen 3 speeds. You can't use both M.2 slots together with the 2.5-inch SATA bay.

Can I upgrade the CPU in the EliteDesk 800 G6 Mini?

Yes, the CPU is socketed (Intel LGA 1200), but only 10th Gen Comet Lake-S, 35 W T-series processors are supported — from the Core i3-10100T up to the i9-10900T in the worldwide specs (the i7-10700T in HP Japan's list). 65 W and 125 W chips are for other case variants and are not supported here.

Can I add a second drive to the 800 G6 Mini?

Yes, but plan the combination: 2x M.2 NVMe SSDs, or 1x M.2 SSD plus 1x 2.5-inch SATA drive (7 mm thick). All three at once is not possible. M.2-only units also lack the SATA bracket, which HP sells separately as the DM SATA Drive Bracket.

Does the EliteDesk 800 G6 Mini have an SD card reader or optical drive?

No. The Mini has no SD card reader, no internal optical drive and no PCIe expansion slots. HP offered an external dock DVD writer as an accessory; the 5-in-1 card reader exists only on the larger SFF, tower and AiO variants.
