HP EliteBook 840 G6 Notebook PC: RAM, SSD and CPU upgrade guide
Mis à jour le 1 novembre 2026 · Rédigé d'après les spécifications vérifiées de cet appareil
The EliteBook 840 G6 (also sold as the 840 G6 or EliteBook 840 G6) is one of the friendlier business laptops to upgrade: both memory slots are user-accessible and the single SSD bay takes the most common M.2 drive size. The processor, however, is not upgradeable at all. Here's what fits, what the limits are, and what to check before you buy. One caution first: the Healthcare Edition (846 G6) shares the chassis but has different specifications, so confirm exactly which model you own before ordering parts.
En bref
- RAM: 2x DDR4-2400 SO-DIMM slots, non-ECC, nothing soldered. 32 GB is the safe maximum; 64 GB is documented by HP but disputed.
- Storage: one M.2 2280 slot (NVMe Gen3 x4 or SATA), no 2.5-inch bay, 2 TB documented maximum.
- CPU: soldered to the system board — no socket, no realistic CPU upgrade.

Estimation
HP's own Maintenance and Service Guide is 'First Edition: May 2019'; HP does not state a product release date directly, hence 'estimate'. Memory (RAM)
You get two DDR4 SO-DIMM slots (260-pin), both on the underside of the chassis and both meant to be serviced by you. There's no soldered memory, so whatever the laptop came with lives in a socket. A lone module must go in the socket labeled "1".
Conseils d'achat
- Buy unbuffered, non-ECC DDR4 SO-DIMMs. Server or ECC modules are not supported.
- Matched pairs are the way to go for dual-channel performance; mixed speeds work but run at the slower clock, so 2400 MT/s is the effective ceiling.
- 2x16 GB = 32 GB is the safe buy. If you need 64 GB, be ready to test and possibly return 32 GB modules.
- Update the BIOS before installing new memory.

Storage (SSD)
There is one M.2 2280 (22 x 80 mm) slot and nothing else — no 2.5-inch bay, no caddy, no optical-bay adapter. The same slot accepts either a PCIe NVMe Gen3 x4 drive or an M.2 SATA-3 drive, so physically either type fits. The catch is your unit's configuration: some low-end SKUs may only be wired or configured for SATA, so check what your machine shipped with or what the BIOS offers before paying for a fast NVMe drive.
Conseils d'achat
- Prefer single-sided M.2 2280 drives — HP specifies 2.3 mm height, up to 2.6 mm for the OPAL/FIPS security drives. Double-sided drives can foul the chassis.
- 2 TB is the documented maximum. 4 TB drives physically fit but are unverified, so treat that as a gamble.
- An NVMe Gen3 x4 drive is the sensible upgrade if your unit supports NVMe; SATA M.2 drives top out much lower.
- Intel Optane H10 is not a normal upgrade path: it requires the specific H10 hardware, Windows 10 64-bit and the Intel RST driver.

Comment mettre à niveau
Avant de commencer
- Back up anything you care about before opening the laptop.
- Power off completely and unplug the charger.
- Ground yourself to avoid static damage to the memory and SSD.
- Update the BIOS/firmware before adding memory — HP calls this out explicitly.
- Follow the exact disassembly steps in the HP Maintenance and Service Guide for your model; the outline below is general, and the service guide is where the model-specific screw and latch details live.
Étapes
- Back up your data
Save your files and, if you'll be reinstalling or cloning the drive, make sure you have a way to get Windows and your apps onto the new SSD. - Power down and unplug
Shut the laptop down fully and disconnect the charger and any cables or devices. - Ground yourself
Work on a non-conductive surface and discharge any static from your hands before touching the modules or drive. - Open the case
Remove the bottom cover as described in the HP service guide, then free the battery as that guide instructs before touching internal components. Both memory slots sit side by side on the bottom of the chassis; the M.2 2280 slot takes a single screw for the drive. - Install the part
For RAM, use matched modules and put a single stick in socket "1". For an SSD, fit a single-sided M.2 2280 drive and secure it in place. - Close it up
Refit the battery and the bottom cover exactly as the service guide describes. - Check the BIOS
Power on and confirm in the BIOS/firmware that the full memory amount and the SSD are detected before booting into your operating system.
Bon à savoir
- Verify your exact model (840 G6 vs 846 G6 Healthcare Edition) before ordering anything.
- Check whether your unit's configuration supports NVMe or only SATA before buying an SSD.
- Update the BIOS before installing new memory.
Foire aux questions
How much RAM can the HP EliteBook 840 G6 take?
It depends on who you ask, and HP is on both sides of the answer. The 2019 HP service guide and Kingston say 32 GB maximum (16 GB per slot in 2 slots), while HP's later QuickSpec lists 64 GB via 2x32 GB. The platform's Intel Whiskey Lake-U generation is officially capped at 32 GB, which makes 2x16 GB the safe bet. 2x32 GB is widely reported to work but isn't guaranteed. The Healthcare Edition 846 G6 is specced to 32 GB, so verify your exact model.
Does the EliteBook 840 G6 support NVMe SSDs?
Yes, in principle: the single M.2 2280 slot accepts PCIe NVMe Gen3 x4 or M.2 SATA-3. However, some low-end configurations may only be set up for SATA, so check your unit's configuration or BIOS before buying an NVMe drive.
Can I upgrade the CPU in the EliteBook 840 G6?
No. The processor is soldered to the system board — there's no socket. The Core i5-8265U, i7-8565U and i7-8665U are the options the machine shipped with, and changing one means replacing the whole system board.
Does the EliteBook 840 G6 have a 2.5-inch drive bay?
No. There is one M.2 2280 slot and no secondary bay, caddy or optical-bay adapter. Total internal storage is that one drive, plus the full-size SD card slot for bulk storage.
Can I use ECC or faster-than-2400 memory?
No ECC or registered memory — only standard unbuffered non-ECC DDR4 SO-DIMMs. Memory faster than 2400 MT/s will clock down to the system's 2400 MT/s speed, so don't pay a premium for it.
Can I add a 4 TB SSD?
A 4 TB M.2 2280 drive physically fits, but it's unverified — HP documents 2 TB as the maximum. If you try it, buy from a seller with a good return policy and be prepared for it not to be recognised.
