Dell PowerEdge R630 upgrade guide: RAM, storage and CPU
Mis à jour le 27 octobre 2026 · Rédigé d'après les spécifications vérifiées de cet appareil
The Dell PowerEdge R630 is a slim 1U rack server (13th Gen) that is unusually friendly to upgrade: none of the memory or the processors are soldered, so everything is socketed and replaceable. The two things you cannot change later are the storage backplane and the riser/expansion configuration, so check what your chassis was built with before buying anything. Here is what fits in each area, the limits, and a simple, safe way to fit it.

RAM (memory)
The R630 has 24 DDR4 DIMM sockets - 12 per processor, arranged as 4 memory channels per CPU with up to 3 DIMMs per channel. All of it is socketed; there is no soldered memory.
Only two memory types work: DDR4 RDIMM or DDR4 LRDIMM. Both must be ECC and registered (or load-reduced). Unbuffered (UDIMM) desktop memory will not work at all, and you cannot mix RDIMMs and LRDIMMs in the same system - pick one type and stick with it. All modules are full-size 288-pin DIMMs running at 1.2 V.
Speed depends on the CPU and how many sticks you fit. DDR4-2400 MT/s is the maximum, and it needs a Xeon v4 processor with one DIMM per channel. Xeon v3 tops out at 2133 MT/s. Fill all three DIMMs in a channel and the speed drops to 1866 MT/s or lower, regardless of the CPU.
Capacity: 64 GB is the largest supported module (LRDIMM), so 24 sockets give a real ceiling of 1.5 TB (24 x 64 GB). Dell's owner's manual memory-specifications page also shows a 3072 GB figure; that is almost certainly a documentation error, because 24 sockets x 64 GB is 1536 GB and Dell's own spec sheet says 'up to 1.5 TB (24 DIMM slots)'. Ignore listings that claim 3 TB support.
You need at least one DIMM per installed processor (a single-CPU system starts at 4 GB, a dual-CPU system at 8 GB). Populate the white-marked sockets first, then add outwards.
Conseils d'achat
- Match the type you already have - RDIMM or LRDIMM, never mixed.
- Buy the same speed and size in matched sets; every channel runs at the slowest stick's speed.
- Skip anyone advertising 3072 GB max RAM for this model.
- Used 32 GB RDIMMs are the sweet spot for a big, cheap upgrade.

Storage (SSD and hard drive)
Drive bays depend entirely on the backplane the server left the factory with, and the backplane is fixed - it cannot be swapped or upgraded later. The R630 was sold with one of these: 8 x 2.5" bays, 10 x 2.5" bays, 10 x 2.5" bays plus 4 NVMe Express Flash bays (PCIe 3.0 x4), or 24 x 1.8" SATA SSD bays. Count the bays on the front of your machine before you shop.
Interfaces supported include 6 Gb/s SATA, NL-SAS, 6/12 Gb/s SAS and, in the NVMe chassis, up to four PCIe NVMe Express Flash SSDs. There are no 3.5" bays at all, no M.2 slot and no BOSS boot card - those belong to other generations. If you want big spinning disks, this is the wrong chassis family.
Bays take standard 2.5" hot-plug drives, and Dell hot-plug caddies are required. 7 mm and 9.5 mm drives are the usual fit; if you buy 15 mm drives, check clearance in your caddy and backplane first. Note that the four NVMe bays are wired to specific PCIe lanes, so some of them may be unusable when only one CPU is installed.
Dell quotes up to 23 TB (24 x 0.96 TB 1.8" SATA SSD) or 18 TB (10 x 1.8 TB SAS HDD), but those are simply the largest drives Dell validated at the time - not hard limits. Larger modern SATA/SAS SSDs and HDDs generally work.
Your RAID controller matters for day-to-day speed. The S130 is software RAID (Windows only), the H330 has no cache (weak write performance, no write-back caching), while the H730 and H730P add cache and battery/supercap support. Internal PERC cards use Dell's proprietary mini mono-PERC slot; a standard PCIe HBA will eat one of your expansion slots instead.
Conseils d'achat
- Check the front of your server first - the bay count and NVMe support are fixed at purchase.
- Buy Dell-compatible hot-plug caddies with any bare drive.
- If write speed matters, prefer a cached H730/H730P over the H330.
- For NVMe, confirm the bays are populated on a dual-CPU configuration.

CPU (processor)
The R630 has two processor sockets and no soldered CPU. Dell's spec sheet and technical guide describe them as Intel LGA2011-1 (Socket R3), running the Intel C610 chipset, and they take Xeon E5-2600 v3 (Haswell-EP) and Xeon E5-2600 v4 (Broadwell-EP) chips, from 4 up to 22 cores.
You may see conflicting socket and CPU-family information in some data sources - one lists LGA3647 and Xeon E-2300 series processors. Dell's own R630 documents describe LGA2011-1 and the E5-2600 v3/v4 families, so go by those and verify the exact chip model before ordering.
Two things matter before you buy. First, v4 (Broadwell) processors will not boot on an early BIOS: update the system BIOS and the iDRAC/BIOS boot-pack while the old CPU is still installed, then fit the new chip. Second, 145 W SKUs (such as the top-end v3 parts) need the high-performance heatsink and power-supply configuration, and in a 1U chassis the fans run very fast and very loudly. Most supported chips are in the 85-135 W range.
In a dual-CPU system, fit matching processors. Also remember that some expansion and storage paths belong to the second CPU - with one CPU installed, riser slot 1 is dead and some NVMe bays may be unavailable.
Conseils d'achat
- Update the BIOS and iDRAC boot-pack before installing a Xeon v4.
- Check your heatsink and PSU before buying a 145 W part.
- Match the model if you are adding a second CPU.
- Used E5-2600 v4 chips are cheap and are the easy speed upgrade.
Comment mettre à niveau
Avant de commencer
- Back up anything you care about - especially before touching storage or a RAID array.
- Power the server down fully and unplug it (and any redundant PSUs).
- Ground yourself to avoid static damage to DIMMs and the CPU.
- Open the case following Dell's owner's manual for the exact disassembly steps - latches, screws and shrouds vary by chassis.
- Install the part, close everything up, then start the server and check that the BIOS and firmware report the new memory, drive or processor correctly.
Étapes
- A safe, general upgrade outline
1. Back up your data and, for drive work, note your RAID layout. 2. Shut the system down and unplug every power cable. 3. Ground yourself (antistatic strap or touch the metal chassis). 4. Open the case using the owner's manual as your guide for which latches and screws to release. 5. Install the part: for RAM, use the white-marked sockets first and never mix RDIMM with LRDIMM; for a CPU, make sure the BIOS is already updated if it is a v4 chip. 6. Close the case, reconnect power, and boot. 7. Enter the BIOS/firmware setup and confirm the new capacity or drive is detected, and check temperatures and memory speed after a v4 CPU or a full memory upgrade.
Bon à savoir
- The storage backplane and riser configuration are the only non-upgradeable parts; everything else in this guide is user-serviceable.
- Data on this page focuses on RAM, storage and CPU; expansion cards and power supplies are covered in Dell's technical guide.
Foire aux questions
How much RAM can the Dell PowerEdge R630 take?
Up to 1.5 TB (1536 GB), using 24 x 64 GB DDR4 LRDIMMs. Dell's memory-specifications page shows 3072 GB, but that contradicts the socket count and Dell's own spec sheet, which says up to 1.5 TB across 24 DIMM slots - treat 3 TB as a documentation error.
Does the PowerEdge R630 support NVMe drives?
Yes, but only if it was bought with the NVMe backplane: up to four PCIe 3.0 x4 Express Flash SSDs in front hot-swap bays. The backplane cannot be added later, and some NVMe bays may be unavailable with only one CPU installed.
Can I put 3.5" hard drives in an R630?
No. The chassis is 2.5" and 1.8" only. For large 3.5" drives you need a different model family.
Can I use normal desktop DDR4 memory?
No. The R630 needs ECC registered (RDIMM) or load-reduced (LRDIMM) DDR4 only. UDIMM and non-ECC desktop modules will not work, and RDIMM cannot be mixed with LRDIMM.
What CPUs fit the Dell PowerEdge R630?
Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 and E5-2600 v4 processors on LGA2011-1 (Socket R3), 4 to 22 cores, up to 145 W TDP. Some listings show other sockets or CPU families for this model - Dell's own documents describe the E5-2600 v3/v4 line, so verify against those.
Do I need a BIOS update for a Xeon v4 CPU?
Yes. Update the system BIOS and the iDRAC/BIOS boot-pack before installing a Broadwell (v4) processor, otherwise the system will not POST. Do the update with the old CPU still in place.
