Dell OptiPlex 7070 Micro upgrade guide: RAM, SSD and CPU

Mis à jour le 10 octobre 2026 · Rédigé d'après les spécifications vérifiées de cet appareil

The Dell OptiPlex 7070 Micro is a small desktop that still leaves you room to grow: two memory slots, an M.2 slot plus a 2.5-inch drive bay, and a socketed processor. This guide tells you what fits in each one, the limits to watch for, and how to swap parts safely. Prices for the parts below are shown live on this page. Before you open the case, check Dell's owner's and service manuals for the exact disassembly steps for your unit.

En bref

  • Memory: 2 x DDR4 SO-DIMM slots, 16 GB per slot, 32 GB total maximum.

RAM upgrade

The Micro has two DDR4 SO-DIMM slots under the cover — the same kind of memory used in laptops — running in dual-channel mode. Both slots are socketed and user-replaceable; nothing is soldered down. If you have seen a note saying the memory is embedded in the board, ignore it: that text in Dell's service manual is a known documentation error for this model, and contradicts Dell's own specifications and removal procedures for the 7070 Micro.

Conseils d'achat

  • Buy DDR4 SO-DIMMs (non-ECC, unbuffered) — regular desktop DIMMs won't fit.
  • The ceiling is 32 GB total: 16 GB is the maximum per slot, so 2 x 32 GB kits are not supported.
  • 2666 MT/s is the top supported speed. Faster-rated modules are fine but run at 2666, and i3-based systems clock memory down to 2400.
  • A matched pair of modules is worth it — it gives you dual-channel performance.

Storage upgrade

You get two storage positions, and they can work at the same time. The first is a single M.2 slot that takes a 2280 (22 x 80 mm) drive in either PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe or M.2 SATA flavour. The second is an internal 2.5-inch SATA bay that runs at 6 Gbps. Dell lists a maximum of 2 TB per drive. A typical setup is a fast NVMe SSD in the M.2 slot for Windows and programs, plus a SATA SSD or hard drive in the 2.5-inch bay for bulk storage. Dell's drive table also covers a 2.5-inch drive on its own, an M.2 drive on its own, and a 2.5-inch drive paired with the optional 16 GB Intel Optane module.

Conseils d'achat

  • Check the drive length: the slot is built for 2280 drives. Shorter 2230/2242 drives fit only with an adapter or alternate mount.
  • The 2.5-inch bay accepts 7 mm drives only — 9.5 mm or 15 mm drives will not fit the carrier.
  • Both NVMe and M.2 SATA SSDs work in the M.2 slot, but a M.2 SATA drive runs at SATA speeds (6 Gbps) and still occupies the slot.
  • There is one 2.5-inch position only, so you cannot run two SATA drives. This model also has no discrete graphics support and no internal optical drive.

CPU upgrade

The processor is socketed — LGA 1151 (Coffee Lake) on Intel's Q370 chipset — so you can replace it. Supported chips are 8th Gen and 9th Gen Intel Core parts (from i3 up to i7-8700 on 8th Gen, and up to i9-9900 on 9th Gen), plus Pentium and Celeron T-series, with 35 W T variants across the range. Dell lists 65 W as the maximum TDP. Keep in mind that the Micro cools its CPU with a small blower: 65 W parts will run hot and loud in this chassis, so the 35 W T-series are the safer upgrade. If you are moving from an 8th Gen to a 9th Gen chip, you will probably need to update the BIOS first.

Conseils d'achat

  • Match the socket: LGA 1151 (8th/9th Gen Coffee Lake) parts. Xeon and ECC memory are not supported here.
  • Prefer 35 W T-series chips for the Micro; the case cooling is the limiting factor, not the socket.
  • Update the BIOS before installing a 9th Gen CPU in a system that shipped with 8th Gen.
  • Budget for fresh thermal paste and careful heatsink reseating — check the service manual for the processor and heatsink procedure.

Comment mettre à niveau

Avant de commencer

  • Back up anything important before you touch the hardware.
  • Shut down the computer, switch it off at the PSU if yours has a switch, and unplug the power cable and everything else.
  • Ground yourself — touch the metal chassis or use an anti-static strap — and work on a non-carpeted surface.
  • Open the case following Dell's owner's and service manuals for the Micro; they show the exact access steps for your unit.
  • Install the new part, close the case, reconnect the cables and power on.
  • Check that the BIOS or firmware recognises the new part — look for your memory total, your drives and your CPU model — then boot into Windows and confirm it again in system settings.

Bon à savoir

  • Dell's documents are not fully consistent on every detail. The service manual says the DDR4 memory is embedded on the board, while the specifications and the manual's own removal procedures show two replaceable SO-DIMM slots — the SO-DIMM description is the correct one for the 7070 Micro.
  • Where Dell lists maximum capacities and processor families, treat them as the supported range; parts outside that range are untested in this chassis.

Foire aux questions

How much RAM can the Dell OptiPlex 7070 Micro take?

32 GB total — two DDR4 SO-DIMM slots with a 16 GB maximum per slot. 2 x 32 GB kits are not supported.

What type of memory does the OptiPlex 7070 Micro use?

DDR4 SO-DIMM (laptop-style) modules, non-ECC and unbuffered, up to 2666 MT/s. Standard desktop DIMMs are the wrong size. With an i3 processor the memory runs at 2400 instead of 2666.

Can I add a second drive to the OptiPlex 7070 Micro?

Yes, but only as one M.2 drive plus one 2.5-inch drive. There is a single M.2 slot (NVMe or M.2 SATA) and a single 2.5-inch SATA bay, so two SATA drives are not an option.

Can I upgrade the CPU in the OptiPlex 7070 Micro?

Yes — the CPU is socketed (LGA 1151) and supports 8th and 9th Gen Intel Core, Pentium and Celeron processors, with 65 W as the listed TDP ceiling. The Micro's small cooler makes 35 W T-series chips the better choice. For a 9th Gen upgrade, update the BIOS first.

What size 2.5-inch drive fits the OptiPlex 7070 Micro?

7 mm drives only. Taller 9.5 mm or 15 mm drives will not fit the internal bay, which supports up to 2 TB.

Does the OptiPlex 7070 Micro support a graphics card or SD card reader?

No. Discrete graphics are limited to the Tower and SFF versions of the 7070, and the Micro has no SD card reader and no internal optical drive.
