Lenovo ThinkSystem SR650 upgrade guide: RAM, storage and CPU
Actualizado el 31 de octubre de 2026 · Escrito a partir de las especificaciones verificadas de este dispositivo
Your ThinkSystem SR650 is a dual-socket 2U server from 2018, sold as Type 7X05 or 7X06. It takes DDR4 ECC memory, 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch SAS, SATA and NVMe drives, and one or two Intel Xeon Scalable processors. There is one catch before you order anything: the SR650 name is also used by the SR650 V2 (Type 7Z72/7Z73, 2021), which is a different machine. Its parts generally do not fit yours — the V2 has an LGA 4189 socket, 32 DIMM slots, DDR4-3200 memory and PCIe 4.0. Check the type number on the label (7X05 or 7X06) before you buy.

RAM
What fits
There are 24 full-size DDR4 DIMM slots — 12 per processor — and all memory must be ECC registered: RDIMM, LRDIMM or 3DS RDIMM. UDIMM and laptop-style SO-DIMM modules do not fit, and nothing is soldered to the board. The smallest module Lenovo documents is 8 GB. With one CPU installed only 12 slots are live; you need two CPUs to use all 24.
The limits
Memory runs at DDR4-2666 with a 1st Gen Xeon Scalable and DDR4-2933 with a 2nd Gen part. The actual speed drops as soon as you fit two DIMMs per channel, so there is no point paying for faster-rated modules than your CPU can use. The biggest single module Lenovo documents is a 128 GB 3DS RDIMM, which puts the ceiling at 3.072 TB (24 x 128 GB). With 64 GB RDIMM or LRDIMM modules you can reach 1.5 TB. Lenovo also supports Intel Optane DCPMM 512 GB modules, which can take the total to 7.5 TB, but those need a 2nd Gen CPU.
What to watch out for
Memory types must not be mixed: no RDIMM and LRDIMM together, no mixing families in the same machine. LRDIMM is supported with 1st Gen CPUs only. If you want more than 1 TB of memory per socket, your processor has to be an M-suffix or L-suffix Xeon. Memory filler (dummy) DIMMs are mandatory if any CPU above 125 W is fitted, and with a number of specific SKUs — this is an airflow requirement, not a nicety.
Buying tips
Lenovo validates its own TruDDR4 modules. Third-party modules often work electrically, but the XClarity Controller or UEFI may flag them as unsupported, and it can affect your support. Match what is already installed in type, speed and capacity, and remember that a single-CPU server only has 12 working slots.
Consejos de compra
- Buy ECC registered DDR4 (RDIMM, LRDIMM or 3DS RDIMM) — nothing else fits
- Match the type and speed already in the machine; memory types cannot be mixed
- One CPU means 12 usable slots, two CPUs means 24
- Budget for memory filler DIMMs if your CPU is rated above 125 W

Storage
What fits
The SR650 takes hot-swap drives in 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch bays. The maximum layouts are up to 24 x 2.5-inch front bays plus 2 rear 3.5-inch bays, or 12 x 3.5-inch front bays plus 2 rear. AnyBay backplanes let SAS, SATA and NVMe drives share the same cage. The largest drives Lenovo documents are a 30.72 TB SAS or SATA SSD, a 15.36 TB NVMe SSD and a 20 TB 3.5-inch hard drive.
SAS and SATA drives run through a SAS RAID adapter or HBA. NVMe drives use the onboard PCIe NVMe support, with Intel VROC handling NVMe RAID; non-Intel NVMe SSDs need an optional license. There is also an optional M.2/RAID enablement kit if you want a separate boot drive.
The limits
The mixed layout of 16 NVMe plus 8 SAS/SATA bays is factory-installed only — you cannot build it yourself afterwards. The platform is PCIe 3.0, so do not expect PCIe 4.0 drive performance here.
What to watch out for
Check your own backplane before buying. Not every SR650 has NVMe-capable bays, and a SAS drive is useless without a SAS RAID adapter or HBA. Lenovo's documents do not state a thickness limit for 2.5-inch drives, and no integrated M.2 slot is documented for this model — if a boot drive on M.2 matters to you, confirm the enablement kit is present in your machine's configuration before ordering.
Buying tips
Match the bay size and the interface (SAS, SATA or NVMe) to your chassis. For a simple capacity upgrade, the biggest SAS or SATA SSDs in the list fit. Make sure a RAID adapter or HBA is installed before you order SAS drives.
Consejos de compra
- Confirm 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch chassis and which backplane you have (SAS/SATA, NVMe, AnyBay)
- SAS drives need a SAS RAID adapter or HBA; NVMe needs NVMe-capable bays
- The 16 NVMe + 8 SAS/SATA layout cannot be added later
- M.2 boot requires the optional enablement kit — check your configuration first

CPU
What fits
There are two LGA 3647 sockets. The SR650 supports 1st Gen Xeon Scalable (Skylake-SP) and 2nd Gen Xeon Scalable (Cascade Lake-SP and Cascade Lake Refresh), from Bronze up to Platinum. Lenovo documents up to 28 cores and up to 205 W per processor. In a two-socket setup, install matching CPUs. Some of your expansion slots only come alive with a second CPU: slots 5 and 6, and the x16 slot in slot 1.
The limits
The 205 W ceiling is the hard limit. Memory filler (dummy) DIMMs are required with any CPU rated above 125 W, and with several specific SKUs. If you want more than 1 TB of memory per socket, you need an M-suffix or L-suffix Xeon, and Optane DCPMM memory requires a 2nd Gen processor. 1st Gen CPUs cap memory speed at DDR4-2666; 2nd Gen reaches 2933.
What to watch out for
A handful of high-frequency SKUs — 6137, 6242R, 6246R, 6248R, 6250, 6256 and 6258R — physically fit only the 24 x 2.5-inch chassis. Check which chassis you have before buying one of these. And remember that parts from the SR650 V2 will not work here: it uses a different socket (LGA 4189) and different memory.
Buying tips
The SR650 has been withdrawn by Lenovo, so processors and memory mostly come from secondary sellers — buy matched pairs and check the exact SKU against the chassis limitation above. If you are upgrading the CPU mainly for memory capacity, look for an M- or L-suffix part rather than a cheaper standard model.
Consejos de compra
- 1st or 2nd Gen Xeon Scalable on LGA 3647, up to 205 W
- Buy a matched pair for a dual-CPU server
- Check the high-frequency SKU list against your chassis (2.5-inch only)
- Plan for memory filler DIMMs with any CPU above 125 W

Cómo ampliar
Antes de empezar
- Back up anything that matters and note your current layout — which bays hold which drives, and which DIMM slots are populated.
- Shut the server down and unplug it from the mains. Never work on a server that is still connected to power.
- Ground yourself to discharge static before touching components.
- Open the case and install the part following Lenovo's population rules (DIMM order, matched CPUs, filler DIMMs where required). Lenovo does not spell out the cover removal or the exact screws and latches for this model in its specification pages, so use the setup guide and owner's manual for the exact disassembly for your chassis.
- Close the case, reconnect and power on. Check in the BIOS/UEFI and the XClarity Controller that the new memory, drive or processor is detected at the expected size and speed, and that any new drive shows up in your storage configuration.
Pasos
- Back up and note your configuration
Protect your data and record where drives and DIMMs are installed so you can put things back the way they were. - Power off and unplug
Shut the server down properly and disconnect it from the mains before opening the case. - Ground yourself
Discharge static — servers are full of sensitive DIMMs and processors. - Open the case and install
Follow the setup guide and owner's manual for the exact cover removal for your chassis, then fit the part using Lenovo's installation rules. - Close up and check the BIOS
Reconnect, power on, and confirm the BIOS/UEFI and XClarity Controller see the new part at the right capacity and speed.
Es bueno saberlo
- The SR650 (Type 7X05/7X06) has been withdrawn by Lenovo, so parts tend to come from secondary sellers and stock of 128 GB 3DS RDIMMs and high-core-count Xeons is limited.
- Lenovo's specification pages do not state a bay thickness limit for 2.5-inch drives and do not document an integrated M.2 slot on this model — check your own configuration and the setup guide before buying.
Preguntas frecuentes
How much RAM can the Lenovo ThinkSystem SR650 take?
Up to 3.072 TB, using 24 x 128 GB 3DS RDIMM modules. With one CPU only 12 of the 24 slots are usable. Adding Optane DCPMM 512 GB modules (which needs a 2nd Gen Xeon) can take the total to 7.5 TB.
What type of memory does the ThinkSystem SR650 use?
Full-size DDR4 ECC registered DIMMs — RDIMM, LRDIMM or 3DS RDIMM. UDIMM and SO-DIMM do not fit, and there is no soldered memory. Speed is DDR4-2666 with 1st Gen CPUs and DDR4-2933 with 2nd Gen.
Can I mix different kinds of memory in the SR650?
No. Memory types must not be intermixed, so no RDIMM together with LRDIMM in the same machine. LRDIMM is supported with 1st Gen CPUs only. Match type, speed and capacity as closely as possible.
Does the ThinkSystem SR650 support NVMe drives?
Yes. The chassis can be configured with up to 24 x 2.5-inch NVMe bays, and AnyBay backplanes mix SAS, SATA and NVMe in one cage. NVMe RAID uses Intel VROC, and non-Intel NVMe SSDs need an optional license. The layout with 16 NVMe plus 8 SAS/SATA bays is factory-installed only.
Which CPUs fit the ThinkSystem SR650?
1st Gen (Skylake-SP) and 2nd Gen (Cascade Lake-SP/Refresh) Intel Xeon Scalable processors on LGA 3647, Bronze through Platinum, up to 205 W. A few high-frequency SKUs (6137, 6242R, 6246R, 6248R, 6250, 6256, 6258R) fit only the 24 x 2.5-inch chassis.
Do SR650 V2 parts work in my SR650?
No. The SR650 V2 (Type 7Z72/7Z73) is a different machine with an LGA 4189 socket, 32 DIMM slots, DDR4-3200 and PCIe 4.0. Check the type number on your label — 7X05 or 7X06 — before ordering CPUs, memory or risers.
