HP Z2 Mini G4 Workstation upgrade guide: RAM, SSD and CPU

Actualizado el 30 de octubre de 2026 · Escrito a partir de las especificaciones verificadas de este dispositivo

The HP Z2 Mini G4 is a genuinely upgrade-friendly little workstation. Memory is not soldered, there is a real M.2 NVMe slot plus a 2.5-inch SATA bay, and the processor is socketed rather than fixed to the board. The trade-offs are the usual mini-PC ones: two memory slots and a 64 GB ceiling, one NVMe slot, one SATA drive, and a 95 W thermal limit on the CPU. Here is what fits, what to watch out for, and how to fit it safely.

De un vistazo

  • 2x DDR4 SO-DIMM slots, up to 32 GB per module, 64 GB total, 2666 MT/s

Memory (RAM)

The Z2 Mini G4 has two user-accessible SO-DIMM slots on the system board and no soldered memory at all, so both slots are available for upgrades. The memory is DDR4, unbuffered (no registered/ RDIMM modules), and the practical ceiling is 32 GB per module, 64 GB in total with a matched pair. That 64 GB figure assumes a 64-bit operating system; on 32-bit Windows anything above roughly 3 GB is unusable.

Speed is capped at 2666 MT/s by the installed processor, so faster modules work but simply run at the lower clock. (Some HP kits labelled 2666 ship with 3200-rated chips; that is cosmetic and makes no performance difference.) For the best performance, fit one module per channel: use matched pairs, put a single module in DIMM1, and if the two modules differ in size, put the larger one in DIMM1.

ECC is decided by your CPU, not by the board. Xeon E, Core i3 and Pentium Gold models accept ECC or non-ECC memory; Core i5 and i7 models accept non-ECC only. Never mix ECC and non-ECC modules, and do not mix modules of different specifications — some third-party DIMMs of differing specs cannot be mixed at all. One note on sources: Kingston's configurator mentions a 'Core i9' version of this machine, but HP offers no Core i9 option for the Z2 Mini G4, so ignore that reference and go by the CPU rules above.

Consejos de compra

  • Buy a matched 2x kit (2x 16 GB or 2x 32 GB SO-DIMM DDR4) for dual-channel performance
  • DDR4-2666 is the sweet spot; faster memory gains you nothing here
  • Check your CPU before choosing ECC: Xeon E / i3 / Pentium Gold can use it, i5/i7 cannot

Storage

You get two storage options and can use both at once: one M.2 2280 slot running PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe (HP's Z Turbo Drive), and one 2.5-inch bay on the SATA 6 Gb/s interface. HP's largest listed kits top out at 2 TB for each, but treat that as the biggest size HP has tested and sold, not a proven hard ceiling.

A few things to watch. An M.2 heatsink is required for the NVMe drive. There is no hardware RAID, no Intel RST and no drive-lock security support, and since there is only one NVMe slot you cannot build an NVMe RAID array (software RAID through the OS is the only option). The 2.5-inch bay's thickness limit is not documented anywhere we could confirm: standard slim 7 mm drives are the safe assumption, but check the fit before buying a 9.5 mm or 15 mm drive. Full-size 3.5-inch drives are not supported.

Don't be fooled by the second M.2 slot: the small M.2 2230 connector is for the WLAN/Bluetooth module only and cannot hold a drive. There is also no memory-card reader; optical storage is an optional external USB ultra-slim DVD-RW writer. Finally, the optional Intel Optane M.2 accelerator (16 GB) is a niche add-on: it is Windows 10 only, one module maximum, and it must be paired with a SATA hard drive — it cannot be combined with a SATA SSD.

Consejos de compra

  • For the fastest setup, put your OS and apps on the M.2 NVMe SSD and add a 2.5-inch SATA SSD or HDD for bulk storage
  • Budget for an M.2 heatsink if your NVMe drive does not include one
  • Double-check drive thickness before ordering a 2.5-inch drive; 7 mm slim is the safe bet

Processor (CPU)

The processor is socketed (LGA 1151, Intel C246 chipset), so it is replaceable — but the upgrade list is short. HP documents 8th-generation 'Coffee Lake' parts only: Xeon E-2100/E-2200 series, Core i7-8700, Core i5-8600/8500, Core i3-8100 and Pentium Gold G5400. There is no documented 9th-gen support, so don't buy a 9000-series chip expecting it to work.

The mini chassis caps the processor at 95 W TDP. The top documented part is the Xeon E-2286G (6 cores / 12 threads, up to 4.9 GHz); other listed options fall in the 80-83 W, 65 W or 54 W range, and Entry-unit models ship with the lower-power CPUs while Performance models can take the hotter chips. Stay within the 95 W limit whatever you choose.

Your CPU choice also rules your memory: it sets the 2666 MT/s memory ceiling, and only Xeon E, Core i3 and Pentium Gold CPUs can use ECC memory — i5 and i7 models are non-ECC only. vPro is available only on select CPUs (i5, i7 and Xeon).

Consejos de compra

  • Only buy an 8th-gen Coffee Lake CPU from HP's supported list; 9th-gen parts are not supported
  • Keep TDP at or below 95 W — the Xeon E-2286G is the documented top end
  • Want ECC memory? You need a Xeon E, Core i3 or Pentium Gold CPU, not an i5/i7

Cómo ampliar

Antes de empezar

  • Back up your data before touching anything inside the case.
  • Shut the system down fully and unplug the power cable and all peripherals.
  • Ground yourself (touch the metal chassis or use an anti-static strap) before handling components.
  • Open the case following the disassembly instructions in HP's owner's manual for the Z2 Mini G4 — we deliberately leave the exact screw or latch details to the manual rather than risk steering you wrong.
  • Install the new part, close the case, reconnect the power and start the system.
  • Check that the BIOS/firmware sees the new memory, drive or processor, and that the total capacity matches what you installed. If it does not, reseat the part and check again before assuming it is faulty.

Pasos

  1. General upgrade outline
    1. Back up anything you care about. 2. Power off completely and unplug the machine. 3. Ground yourself. 4. Open the case using HP's owner's manual for the exact procedure. 5. Install the RAM module, SSD/HDD or CPU. 6. Close the case and reconnect everything. 7. Power on and confirm the BIOS/firmware reports the new part correctly.

Es bueno saberlo

  • HP's documents do not state a thickness limit for the 2.5-inch bay; slim 7 mm drives are the safe assumption, but confirm the fit before buying a 9.5 mm or 15 mm drive.
  • The 2 TB figure for SSDs and HDDs reflects HP's largest listed kits, not a proven maximum capacity.

Preguntas frecuentes

How much RAM can the HP Z2 Mini G4 take?

Up to 64 GB total: two SO-DIMM slots, 32 GB per module, DDR4-2666. Nothing is soldered, so both slots are available. The 64 GB figure assumes a 64-bit operating system.

Does the HP Z2 Mini G4 support ECC memory?

It depends on the processor. Xeon E, Core i3 and Pentium Gold models accept ECC or non-ECC; Core i5 and i7 models accept non-ECC only. Never mix ECC and non-ECC modules in the same machine.

Can I upgrade the CPU to a 9th-gen Intel chip?

No. HP documents 8th-generation Coffee Lake processors only (Xeon E-2100/E-2200, Core i7-8700, i5-8600/8500, i3-8100, Pentium Gold G5400) on the LGA 1151 socket, with a 95 W TDP ceiling. 9th-gen parts are not supported.

Can I add a second NVMe SSD or set up RAID?

No. There is a single M.2 2280 NVMe slot (the small M.2 2230 slot is for WLAN/Bluetooth only), so there is no NVMe RAID. HP also documents no hardware RAID, Intel RST or drive-lock support; software RAID through the operating system is the only option.

Can I use an M.2 SSD and a 2.5-inch drive at the same time?

Yes. The M.2 2280 NVMe slot and the 2.5-inch SATA 6 Gb/s bay can run simultaneously. Remember an M.2 heatsink is required, and 3.5-inch drives do not fit.

Does the HP Z2 Mini G4 support Intel Optane memory?

Yes, but only in a narrow setup: the optional 16 GB Optane M.2 accelerator is Windows 10 only, limited to one module, and must be paired with a SATA hard drive — it cannot be combined with a SATA SSD.
