Synology DS920+ upgrades
One free SO-DIMM slot lets you go from 4 GB to 8 GB total, and the two M.2 NVMe slots are intended for SSD cache. The four SATA bays take 3.5" or 2.5" drives.
- Memory (SO-DIMM): DDR4 SO-DIMM · 4 GB soldered · up to 8 GB total · 2666 MT/s
- 3.5"/2.5" drive bay: 4 × HDD / SSD 3.5" / 2.5" (SATA)
- M.2 slot: 2 × SSD M.2 2280 (NVMe)
Memory (SO-DIMM) DDR4 SO-DIMM · 4 GB soldered · up to 8 GB total · 2666 MT/s
Non-ECC unbuffered DDR4 only. Synology's official module is the 4 GB D4NESO-2666-4G, sold as 2666 but run at the CPU's maximum frequency. Larger third-party modules are unofficial and unverified, and non-Synology modules void full warranty and support. The slot is inside, on the right, so you must remove the drive trays.
3.5"/2.5" drive bay 4 × HDD / SSD 3.5" / 2.5" (SATA)
Synology lists 64 TB raw internal capacity, based on 4 x 16 TB drives, which is not a hard per-drive limit. One DX517 expansion unit can be added over eSATA for 9 bays in total.

M.2 slot 2 × SSD M.2 2280 (NVMe)
On the underside under two covers, and not hot-swappable. Synology documents these as SSD cache slots, not general storage volumes. PCIe generation is not stated in the sources.
