Synology DiskStation DS923+ upgrades
Released 2022 · on sale
CPU is soldered (BGA) AMD Ryzen R1600, dual-core/quad-thread 2.6–3.1 GHz — not socketed or upgradable, so there is no CPU slot. It has no iGPU, so no hardware video transcoding (a regression vs. the DS920+ for Plex/Jellyfin). Networking is 2×1 GbE only; 10 GbE requires the proprietary E10G22-T1-Mini card in the PCIe Gen3 ×2 'Network Upgrade Slot' (standard NICs do not fit). Model suffixes (/4G, /8G) differ only in pre-installed RAM.

- 2× DDR4 ECC SO-DIMM (unbuffered, 260-pin): 2 × SO-DIMM · up to 32 GB total · 2400 MT/s · ECC
- 4× SATA 3.5"/2.5" bays + 2× M.2 2280 NVMe: 6 × 3.5" / 2.5" / M.2 2280 (SATA / NVMe)
2× DDR4 ECC SO-DIMM (unbuffered, 260-pin) 2 × SO-DIMM · up to 32 GB total · 2400 MT/s · ECC
Ships with 4 GB in Slot 1 (fully socketed, no soldered RAM). Synology requires identical modules with the same model number; only its D4ES02-4G/8G and D4ES01-16G parts are validated, and non-Synology memory voids full warranty/support. DDR4-2400 is the CPU memory controller limit (Synology states no clock); faster SO-DIMMs will downclock. 2×16 GB = 32 GB is the validated ceiling.
No compatible offers right now.
4× SATA 3.5"/2.5" bays + 2× M.2 2280 NVMe 6 × 3.5" / 2.5" / M.2 2280 (SATA / NVMe)
4 hot-swap SATA bays (3.5" HDD / 2.5" SSD, no documented thickness limit) plus 2 non-hot-swappable M.2 2280 slots wired for NVMe/PCIe only — SATA M.2 SSDs do not fit. M.2 storage pools officially require Synology-verified NVMe SSDs (SNV3400/3410); cache works more broadly. Internal volume cap 108 TB; one DX517 expansion over eSATA brings total to 9 drives. Full support only for drives on Synology's compatibility list.
