Lenovo ThinkPad T480 upgrades
RAM and storage are user-upgradable. The T480 also has an SD-type media card reader, which is not listed as a slot because the schema has no full-size SD form factor. Disable the internal battery in BIOS and power off before opening the base.

Both slots are user sockets and nothing is soldered. The 16 GB per-module figure is inferred from the 32 GB total across two sockets, not stated by Lenovo. 7th-gen CPUs (i5-7200U/7300U) run RAM at DDR4-2133. Some SKUs ship with one module, and adding a matching second one enables dual-channel. Use standard non-ECC unbuffered SO-DIMMs.

7 mm drives only; 9.5 mm drives are not supported. The datasheet lists up to 2 TB. The PSREF spec says the system has one HDD slot or one M.2 2280 slot exclusively for storage, while the datasheet lists both together. This varies by SKU, so check the Hardware Maintenance Manual before buying two drives.

M.2 slot (WWAN slot) SSD M.2 2242 (NVMe)
This slot is shared with the WWAN modem, so using it for storage means no 4G LTE. It runs at PCIe 3.0 x2 because of an adapter limitation. Lenovo lists a 128 GB NVMe SSD or a 16 GB Intel Optane module for it, and the EMEA datasheet says it is intended for HDD configurations. The 2242 length is not confirmed by the sources. A thermal pad for the SSD in this slot is a service part.
