Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 4 (Intel) RAM and SSD Upgrade Guide
Updated Oct. 9, 2026 · Written from this device's verified specifications
This guide covers adding RAM and a bigger SSD to the ThinkPad T14 Gen 4 (Intel), models 21HD and 21HE. The short answer: DDR4 and DDR5 models have one free SO-DIMM slot and one M.2 2280 NVMe slot, while LPDDR5x models have no RAM slot at all.
At a glance
- DDR4 models: 8GB soldered plus one DDR4 SO-DIMM slot, up to 40GB total at 3200 MT/s.
- DDR5 models: 16GB soldered plus one DDR5 SO-DIMM slot, up to 32GB total at 5200 MT/s.
- LPDDR5x models (16GB or 32GB) have all memory soldered, so RAM cannot be upgraded.
- One M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe slot, with Lenovo listing up to 2TB; there is no 2.5 inch bay and no second internal drive.
- Lenovo's spec pages don't describe a user-upgradeable CPU, so this guide covers RAM and storage only.

RAM: check your memory type first
What you can add depends on which variant you own. DDR4 models have 8GB soldered to the board plus one DDR4 SO-DIMM slot. Lenovo lists a maximum of 40GB total (8GB soldered plus a 32GB module) at DDR4-3200. DDR5 models have 16GB soldered plus one DDR5 SO-DIMM slot, for a maximum of 32GB total (16GB soldered plus a 16GB module) at DDR5-5200. DDR4 and DDR5 modules are not interchangeable.
LPDDR5x models, sold with 16GB or 32GB, have all their memory soldered and no slot, so there is nothing to upgrade. Lenovo ties LPDDR5x to the discrete-graphics models, so confirm the memory type of your exact SKU before buying a module.
Filling the slot gives dual-channel memory. Some DDR5 SKUs ship with the slot empty and may run single-channel until you add a module. The per-module limits (32GB for DDR4, 16GB for DDR5) are the sizes Lenovo tested, so a larger module might work but is unverified. Faster DDR5-5600 modules will run at 5200 at most. Lenovo doesn't state whether the slot takes ECC memory; assume standard non-ECC unbuffered SO-DIMMs.
Buying tips
- Look up your exact model number (21HD or 21HE plus the SKU) to confirm DDR4, DDR5 or LPDDR5x before ordering.
- Buy a SO-DIMM that matches your memory generation: DDR4 for DDR4 models, DDR5 for DDR5 models.
- Stick to 32GB (DDR4) or 16GB (DDR5) modules, the sizes Lenovo has tested.
- Don't pay extra for DDR5-5600 or faster; the laptop runs it at 5200.
- Choose standard non-ECC, unbuffered SO-DIMMs.

Storage: one M.2 2280 NVMe slot
The laptop has a single M.2 2280 slot that supports PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe drives. Lenovo lists support for one drive of up to 2TB. That 2TB figure is Lenovo's tested maximum, so a larger 2280 drive may work but isn't officially supported.
There is no 2.5 inch bay and no second internal drive, so a bigger SSD replaces the one you have rather than adding to it. Factory drives are 256GB, 512GB or 1TB (standard) and 512GB, 1TB or 2TB (Performance), all Opal 2.0 self-encrypting. Both tiers use PCIe 4.0 x4 but differ in speed. We haven't confirmed whether your model has an SD card reader or WWAN slot; check Lenovo's spec page for your SKU.
Buying tips
- Buy an M.2 2280 NVMe drive, not a SATA M.2 or a 2.5 inch drive.
- Choose 2TB or less to stay within what Lenovo lists.
- If your current drive is self-encrypting, make sure you've backed up or decrypted your data before swapping it.
- Clone your old drive or plan a fresh Windows install, since only one drive fits.

How to upgrade
Before you start
- Find your exact model number and confirm the memory type (DDR4, DDR5 or LPDDR5x).
- Back up your files, and have recovery media or a cloning tool ready if you're replacing the SSD.
- Get Lenovo's Hardware Maintenance Manual for the T14 Gen 4 from Lenovo's support site, and check whether it tells you to disconnect the internal battery first.
- Check for a BIOS update before upgrading, and read its release notes.
- Use a small precision screwdriver set, a clean table and an anti-static strap or regular grounding.
Steps
- Back up your data
Copy important files to an external drive or cloud storage. If you're replacing the SSD, make a full image or have a fresh install plan. - Power off and unplug
Shut the laptop down fully (not sleep), unplug the charger and any accessories, and let it sit for a few minutes. - Ground yourself
Touch bare metal or wear an anti-static strap before handling parts. Hold modules and drives by the edges. - Open the case
Follow the Hardware Maintenance Manual for removing the bottom cover, including any battery-disconnect step it requires. Keep track of the screws you remove. - Install the SO-DIMM or SSD
For RAM, seat the SO-DIMM in the free slot (DDR4 or DDR5 models only). For storage, swap the M.2 2280 drive. Check the manual for how the module or drive is secured and don't force anything. - Close up and reconnect
Refit the cover and screws, then reconnect the charger. - Check that the laptop sees the part
Start the laptop and open the BIOS setup screen. Confirm the total memory or the new drive is detected. For a new SSD, install or restore your operating system.
Good to know
- Lenovo's per-module limits (32GB DDR4, 16GB DDR5) are tested figures, so larger modules are unverified.
- Lenovo doesn't state whether ECC memory is supported; standard non-ECC SO-DIMMs are the safe assumption.
- The 2TB SSD maximum is also a tested figure; a larger drive may work but is unsupported.
- We couldn't confirm details from the Hardware Maintenance Manual, such as the exact disassembly steps, the M.2 slot's physical details or any battery-disconnect step, so check it before you open the laptop.
- We haven't verified whether your model has an SD card reader or WWAN slot.
- This guide doesn't cover CPU upgrades because Lenovo's spec pages don't describe a user-upgradeable processor.
Frequently asked questions
How much RAM can the ThinkPad T14 Gen 4 (Intel) take?
DDR4 models list up to 40GB (8GB soldered plus a 32GB SO-DIMM). DDR5 models list up to 32GB (16GB soldered plus a 16GB SO-DIMM). LPDDR5x models can't be upgraded and stay at 16GB or 32GB.
Is the RAM soldered on the T14 Gen 4?
Partly or fully, depending on the variant. DDR4 and DDR5 models have soldered memory plus one SO-DIMM slot. LPDDR5x models have all memory soldered and no slot.
Does the T14 Gen 4 use DDR4 or DDR5?
Both exist, depending on the SKU, along with an LPDDR5x version. DDR4 and DDR5 modules aren't interchangeable, so check your exact model before buying.
Can I add a second SSD to the T14 Gen 4?
No. Lenovo lists one M.2 2280 slot and one drive, with no 2.5 inch bay.
What is the largest SSD it supports?
Lenovo lists up to 2TB in the M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe slot. A larger drive might work, but it isn't officially supported.
Will faster DDR5-5600 memory run at full speed?
No. DDR5 models run memory at 5200 MT/s at most, so DDR5-5600 modules will be limited to that.
