Lenovo ThinkPad P51 upgrades

Released 2017 · end of sale

CPU is BGA-soldered (45 W 6th/7th Gen Core i7 H-series or Xeon E3-1505M/1535M v5/v6) and not user-upgradable — no CPU slot. Machine types are 20HH/20HJ ('20JK' appears to be a typo). RAM, storage, and WWAN are the realistic upgrade paths.

DDR4-2400 SO-DIMM (4 slots) 4 × DDR4 SO-DIMM · up to 64 GB total · 2400 MT/s

All memory is socketed (260-pin DDR4, dual-channel); no soldered RAM. Speed drops to 2133 on CPUs with a lower memory controller. Both ECC and non-ECC unbuffered SO-DIMMs work, but ECC is only functional with a Xeon E3 v5/v6 CPU. Validated max is 4x16 GB = 64 GB; 32 GB modules are unvalidated.

2.5" SATA 7mm + 2x M.2 2280 NVMe 3 × SSD / HDD M.2 2280 / 2.5" (NVMe / SATA) · max 7 mm thick · up to 2.048 TB

Up to 3 drives: one 2.5" SATA 6 Gb/s bay (7 mm height only, no 9.5/15 mm) plus two M.2 2280 NVMe slots (PCIe 3.0 x4). M.2 modules must be single-sided; double-sided 2280 won't fit. Documented max is 2 TB for the 2.5" drive (1 TB in one datasheet) and 1 TB per M.2 SSD; larger drives are unvalidated. RAID 0/1 needs two identical drives and a RAID-capable config. The WWAN M.2 slot is not for storage.
