Lenovo ThinkPad E16 Gen 3 (Intel) upgrade guide
Updated Oct. 10, 2026 · Written from this device's verified specifications
Before you buy anything, check exactly which machine you own. The Intel version of the ThinkPad E16 Gen 3 (known to Lenovo as type 21SR) can be built on four different processor platforms — Raptor Lake U/H, Meteor Lake, Arrow Lake or Lunar Lake — and what you can upgrade depends heavily on which one is inside. If your unit is labelled 21TQ or 21TR, those are generally AMD-variant designations and the Intel details below may not apply; look up your exact MTM on PSREF first. Find your MTM on the label on the bottom of the laptop, or in the BIOS.
At a glance
- Most configs have two DDR5 SO-DIMM slots for up to 64GB total (Lenovo calls 64GB special-bid only).
- Lunar Lake configs have soldered memory and cannot take RAM at all.
- Most configs have two M.2 NVMe slots (one 2242, one 2280); Lunar Lake has one 2280 slot.
- The CPU is soldered — there is no processor upgrade path.
- Match drive length to the slot: 2242 versus 2280 is the most common buying mistake.
| 2x DDR5 SO-DIMM (non-Lunar Lake configs) | 2 × DDR5 SO-DIMM · up to 64 GB total · 5600 MT/s |
|---|---|
| 1x M.2 2242 + 1x M.2 2280 NVMe (PCIe 4.0 x4) | 2 × SSD M.2 2242 / M.2 2280 (NVMe) · up to 1.024 TB |

RAM upgrade
What fits: on Raptor Lake, Meteor Lake and Arrow Lake configs, the ThinkPad E16 Gen 3 (Intel) has two DDR5 SO-DIMM slots, dual-channel capable. These are ordinary unbuffered, non-ECC modules — nothing in Lenovo's specs indicates ECC or registered memory support.
Limits: Lenovo validates up to 32GB per module and 64GB total (2 x 32GB), though its own footnote calls 64GB a special-bid option, so retail configurations usually top out lower. Rated speed is DDR5-5600 on Raptor Lake H, Meteor Lake and Arrow Lake configs. On Raptor Lake U configs, DDR5-5600 modules are installed but run at DDR5-5200 because of the platform limit.
Watch out for: the Lunar Lake variants. Those have no RAM slots at all — 16GB or 32GB of LPDDR5X-8533 is soldered to the mainboard and cannot be upgraded, ever. Confirm your CPU platform before ordering memory.
Buying tips: buy a matched pair (2 x 16GB or 2 x 32GB) to get dual-channel performance. On Raptor Lake U configs, don't pay extra for faster-rated RAM — it will run at DDR5-5200 anyway.
Buying tips
- Matched SO-DIMM pairs give you dual-channel performance.
- DDR5-5600 is the sweet spot; faster-rated modules add cost but not speed on these platforms.
- Skip the purchase entirely if you have a Lunar Lake config.

Storage (SSD) upgrade
What fits: on Raptor Lake, Meteor Lake and Arrow Lake configs there are two M.2 NVMe slots, both PCIe 4.0 x4 — one short M.2 2242 slot and one standard M.2 2280 slot. Lenovo ships the machine with the 2242 slot populated (factory drives are listed as Opal 2.0 self-encrypting) and leaves the 2280 slot empty for user self-expansion. Lunar Lake configs have only one M.2 2280 slot.
Limits: Lenovo validates up to 1TB per slot. Larger third-party drives may well work, but that is unverified territory. There is no 2.5-inch or SATA bay in any specification we could find.
Watch out for: drive length. The populated slot takes a short 2242 drive; the free slot takes a full-length 2280 drive. Mixing them up is the single most common mistake with this laptop. Also note the Opal 2.0 note on the factory drive if you rely on hardware self-encryption — replacement drives should support the standard if you want to keep that feature.
Buying tips: for most owners the easiest upgrade is dropping a 2280 NVMe SSD into the empty slot and leaving the factory 2242 drive as the boot drive. Check what comes with your specific MTM before you buy.
Buying tips
- A 2280 PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe SSD fits the empty slot on most configs.
- Measure or check the slot before buying — 2242 and 2280 are not interchangeable.
- If you want self-encrypting storage, choose an Opal 2.0 drive.

How to upgrade
Before you start
- Back up your data before opening the laptop.
- Shut down completely and unplug the AC adapter.
- Ground yourself to avoid static damage to the components.
- Open the case following the owner's manual for your exact model — exact disassembly details vary and we can't confirm screw or latch positions for this generation.
- Install the new part, close the case, and power on.
- Check in the BIOS/firmware setup that the new memory or drive is detected before booting into your operating system.
Steps
- Back up
Make a full backup of anything you care about before you start. - Power down
Shut the laptop down fully and unplug the AC adapter. - Ground yourself
Work on a clean surface and discharge static — touch something grounded before handling components. - Open the case
Follow the owner's manual for your exact model to open the chassis. We could not confirm the specific screws or latches for this generation, so don't guess. - Install
Fit the SO-DIMM or M.2 SSD, seating it firmly in the correct slot. - Close and verify
Reassemble the case, power on, and enter the BIOS to confirm the new part is recognised before booting.
Good to know
- The Intel variant is documented by Lenovo as type 21SR. If your unit is marked 21TQ or 21TR, it may be the AMD variant and these details may not apply — verify your MTM on PSREF before buying parts.
- Upgrade options differ sharply between CPU platforms (especially Lunar Lake versus everything else). Check which platform you have first.
- Maximum capacities are what Lenovo validates; larger third-party SSDs may work but are unverified.
- We could not find a user or service manual for this specific generation, so exact disassembly details are not confirmed here — use the owner's manual for your model.
Frequently asked questions
How much RAM can the ThinkPad E16 Gen 3 (Intel) take?
On Raptor Lake, Meteor Lake and Arrow Lake configs, up to 64GB total in two 32GB DDR5 SO-DIMMs — though Lenovo calls 64GB a special-bid option. Lunar Lake configs have soldered memory and cannot be upgraded at all.
Does the ThinkPad E16 Gen 3 (Intel) support 64GB of RAM?
Yes on paper — 2 x 32GB SO-DIMMs — but Lenovo's footnote lists 64GB as special-bid only, so normal retail configurations top out lower. Your laptop must be a non-Lunar Lake config to have slots at all.
Can I add a second SSD?
On Raptor Lake, Meteor Lake and Arrow Lake configs, yes: there are two M.2 NVMe slots, with the 2280 slot typically left empty from the factory. Lunar Lake configs have only one 2280 slot.
Is the RAM soldered?
It depends on the CPU platform. Lunar Lake configs have 16GB or 32GB of LPDDR5X soldered and no slots. Other configs have two upgradeable DDR5 SO-DIMM slots.
Can I upgrade the CPU?
No. The processor is soldered to the systemboard with no socket, so there is no CPU upgrade path.
Does it have a 2.5-inch SATA bay or a card reader?
No SATA bay appears in any specification for this model, and no memory-card reader is listed. Treat both as absent, but check your exact MTM's spec sheet to be sure.
