Lenovo ThinkCentre M70q Gen 6 Tiny (Intel) RAM and SSD Upgrade Guide
Updated Oct. 9, 2026 · Written from this device's verified specifications
This guide covers adding memory and storage to the Lenovo ThinkCentre M70q Gen 6 Tiny (Intel). The short answer: you can fit up to 64 GB of DDR5-5600 SO-DIMM memory in two slots and two M.2 2280 NVMe SSDs of up to 2 TB each (Lenovo's tested maximums). The processor is not listed as an upgradeable part.
At a glance
- RAM: 2 DDR5 SO-DIMM slots, up to 64 GB total (2 x 32 GB), speeds up to 5600 MT/s.
- Use two matched modules for dual-channel; a single stick runs single-channel.
- Storage: 2 M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe slots, up to 2 TB per drive (4 TB total).
- No 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch bay and no SATA; 22110-length drives will not fit.
- CPU: Lenovo's documents don't list a user-upgradeable processor, so this guide does not cover CPU swaps.

Memory (RAM) upgrades
The M70q Gen 6 Tiny has two DDR5 SO-DIMM slots (the laptop-size module, not a full-size desktop DIMM). Lenovo lists a maximum of 64 GB, made up of two 32 GB modules, at speeds up to DDR5-5600. No soldered memory is mentioned, and the listed configurations use a single 16 GB module, so one slot is typically free on those.
For best performance, fill both slots with matched modules. A single stick works but runs in single-channel mode, which gives less memory bandwidth. Install modules in the order shown in the illustration in Lenovo's user guide.
The 64 GB figure is the largest amount Lenovo has tested, not a hard limit. Larger modules may work but are not validated. Lenovo's documents also don't say whether ECC or registered memory is supported, so stick with standard non-ECC unbuffered SO-DIMMs. If you need ECC, ask Lenovo before buying.
Buying tips
- Buy DDR5 SO-DIMMs only; desktop DIMMs and older DDR4 modules will not fit.
- Look for DDR5-5600 modules, ideally two identical ones sold as a kit.
- If you already have one 16 GB stick, adding an identical second module is the simplest way to get dual-channel.
- Choose standard non-ECC unbuffered modules unless Lenovo confirms otherwise.

Storage (SSD) upgrades
The M70q Gen 6 Tiny has two M.2 2280 slots for PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe SSDs. Lenovo lists up to 2 TB per drive, so 4 TB in total with both slots filled. Lenovo's datasheet footnote says the SSD slots support up to 64 Gbps on NVMe drives. As with memory, 2 TB is the tested maximum; larger drives may work but are not validated.
There is a third M.2 slot, but it is for the WLAN card and is not available for storage. Some datasheets say the second SSD slot can instead host a discrete NPU card, though they give no details, so check Lenovo's documentation if you plan to use it that way. There is no 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch bay, no SATA connection and no card reader listed, so M.2 NVMe is your only storage upgrade route.
Only the 2280 length is listed. Longer drives such as 22110 will not fit. Lenovo's user guide warns that M.2 SSDs are sensitive to handling, and notes that the capacity the system reports is less than the drive's nominal capacity.
Buying tips
- Buy an M.2 2280 NVMe drive; SATA, 2.5-inch and 22110 drives are not supported.
- Lenovo lists both standard and Performance PCIe 4.0 x4 drives with Opal security, but Opal is not required for a replacement drive.
- Plan on 2 TB or less per drive to stay within what Lenovo has tested.
- If you are adding a second drive rather than replacing the first, check which slot is free before you buy.

How to upgrade
Before you start
- Back up your files, or clone your current drive, before changing storage.
- Have your Windows licence or recovery option ready if you plan a clean install on a new drive.
- Check your current setup (installed RAM and drive size) so you know whether a slot is free.
- Find Lenovo's user guide for the M70q Gen 6 Tiny for exact disassembly instructions and the memory installation order.
- Work on a clean, flat, static-free surface and keep a small screwdriver handy. Some configurations use a toolless chassis screw, and others may differ.
Steps
- Power off and unplug
Shut the computer down fully, then unplug the power adapter and all other cables. Hold the power button for a few seconds to discharge any residual power. - Ground yourself
Touch a bare metal part of the case, or use an anti-static wrist strap, before handling any components. - Open the case
Follow the owner's manual to remove the cover. Some configurations have a toolless chassis screw, and the dust filter and power adapter cage also vary by configuration, so check what your unit has. - Install memory
Open the SO-DIMM slots, insert modules at the angle shown in the manual and press them down until they click into place. Fit modules in the order shown in the user guide's illustration, and use two matched modules for dual-channel. - Install or swap the SSD
Handle the M.2 2280 drive by its edges, fit it into a free NVMe slot as shown in the manual and secure it. Leave the WLAN slot alone. - Close the case and reconnect
Refit the cover and any screws, then reconnect the cables and power. - Check that the BIOS sees the new parts
Start the computer and enter the BIOS/firmware setup to confirm the new memory total and the new drive are detected. A new blank drive will also need an operating system installed or restored from your backup.
Good to know
- The 64 GB RAM and 2 TB per drive figures are the largest sizes Lenovo has tested; larger parts may work but are not validated.
- Lenovo's documents don't say whether ECC or registered memory is supported; assume standard non-ECC unbuffered SO-DIMMs.
- Most documents describe the M.2 slots as one for WLAN and two for SSD, but some datasheets say the second SSD slot can host a discrete NPU instead. The details aren't given.
- Shipped configurations differ (for example Core Ultra 5 225T with 512 GB SSD versus 235T with 256 GB SSD), as do optional parts such as the dust filter, power adapter cage and toolless chassis screw. Check what your unit has.
- Lenovo's documents don't list a CPU upgrade path, so this guide doesn't cover swapping the processor.
- Follow the owner's manual for exact disassembly; this guide gives only a general outline.
Frequently asked questions
How much RAM can the ThinkCentre M70q Gen 6 Tiny take?
Lenovo lists a maximum of 64 GB, using two 32 GB DDR5 SO-DIMMs. That is the tested maximum rather than a hard limit, so larger modules may work but are not validated.
What type of RAM does the M70q Gen 6 Tiny use?
It uses DDR5 SO-DIMMs (laptop-size modules) at up to 5600 MT/s. It has two slots and is dual-channel capable when both are filled with matched modules.
Does the M70q Gen 6 Tiny support ECC memory?
This is unconfirmed. Lenovo's documents list ordinary DDR5-5600 SO-DIMMs and don't mention ECC, so assume standard non-ECC unbuffered modules. Ask Lenovo first if you need ECC.
Can I add a second SSD to the M70q Gen 6 Tiny?
Yes. It has two M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe slots, each up to 2 TB (Lenovo's tested maximum), so 4 TB in total. The third M.2 slot is for WLAN only.
Can I fit a 2.5-inch drive or a 22110 SSD?
No. There is no 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch bay and no SATA listed, and only 2280-length M.2 drives are listed, so 22110 drives will not fit.
Can I upgrade the processor?
Lenovo's documents don't list the CPU as a user-upgradeable part. Shipped configurations vary, for example Core Ultra 5 225T and 235T models, so choose the processor when you buy the system.
