Intel NUC 13 Pro Kit upgrade guide: RAM, storage and CPU

Updated Oct. 10, 2026 · Written from this device's verified specifications

The Intel NUC 13 Pro Kit (also sold as Arena Canyon, NUC13ANHi5/NUC13ANHi7 or NUC13i5FNH/NUC13i7FNH) is one of the friendlier mini PCs to upgrade. Nothing is soldered down when it comes to memory, and there is room for up to three drives in the right chassis. This guide covers what fits, the limits to watch, and how to do the job safely. Kits ship without RAM or an SSD, so plan your parts before you power on for the first time.

At a glance

  • Memory: two DDR4 SO-DIMM slots, up to 64 GB total at 3200 MT/s, 1.2 V non-ECC only
  • Storage: one M.2 2280 NVMe (Gen4 x4), one M.2 2242, and a 2.5-inch SATA bay in the tall chassis only
  • Processor: soldered (BGA) and not replaceable - choose your i3/i5/i7 SKU up front

RAM: two SO-DIMM slots, up to 64 GB

The NUC 13 Pro Kit has two 260-pin DDR4 SO-DIMM sockets, and all of its memory is socketed - nothing is soldered to the board. The maximum is 64 GB, reached with two 32 GB modules. Supported speeds are DDR4-2400, DDR4-2666 and DDR4-3200, with 3200 MT/s being the fastest the memory controller accepts.

Buying tips

  • Buy DDR4 SO-DIMMs at 1.2 V, non-ECC and unbuffered. Desktop DIMMs, DDR5 and ECC modules will not work.
  • Prefer DDR4-3200 modules; slower 2400/2666 sticks work too, just at their own speed.
  • For 64 GB, buy two identical 32 GB modules and check the Intel Product Compatibility Tool first.

Storage: up to three drives, chassis depending

The primary slot is an M.2 2280 Key-M connector running NVMe PCIe Gen4 x4 - use this for your boot drive and fastest SSD. A second M.2 2242 Key-B slot is intended for a small SATA SSD; note that Intel's user guides describe it as SATA while ASUS lists the connector electrically as PCIe x1 Gen3 with USB 3.2 pins. To be safe, buy a SATA (B-key) 2242 SSD rather than an NVMe one.

Buying tips

  • The 2.5-inch SATA bay exists only in the tall (H) chassis and takes 7 mm drives only - no 9.5 mm drives and no 3.5-inch drives.
  • The 2.5-inch bay needs the SATA cable that comes in the box.
  • The slim chassis omits the 2.5-inch bay entirely, and the Desk Edition is documented with only the two M.2 slots, so check which chassis you have before buying a 2.5-inch drive.
  • There is no documented capacity limit for any of the drive bays.

How to upgrade

Before you start

  • Back up anything important.
  • Shut the system down fully and unplug the power adapter.
  • Ground yourself to avoid static discharge.
  • Open the case following the disassembly instructions in the owner's manual - the exact latch and screw arrangement is model specific.
  • Install the memory or drive, keeping modules and SSDs the right way round in their connectors.
  • Close the case, reconnect power and start the system.
  • Enter the BIOS/firmware to confirm it recognises the new RAM or drive before booting your operating system.

Steps

  1. Before you begin
Back up your data, power the NUC down completely and unplug it from the wall. Ground yourself before touching components.
  2. Open the case
Disassembly details (screws and latches) vary between the tall and slim chassis, so follow the disassembly section of the owner's manual for your exact kit.
  3. Install the part
For RAM, seat each SO-DIMM evenly into its slot until the side clips lock. For storage, fit the M.2 drive in the appropriate connector; if you are using the 2.5-inch bay in the tall chassis, connect the included SATA cable and use only a 7 mm drive.
  4. Close up and verify
Reassemble the case, plug the power back in and start the NUC. Check the BIOS/firmware screen to make sure it reports the new memory or drive, then boot into your operating system.

Good to know

  • Sources disagree about the M.2 2242 slot: Intel's user guides describe it as supporting SATA SSDs, while ASUS lists it as PCIe x1 Gen3 with USB 3.2 pins. A SATA 2242 SSD is the safer purchase.
  • Intel documents disagree on the stock memory configurations of pre-built models - one document lists the i7 with 2x8 GB and another lists 2x4 GB. Kits ship without RAM, so this mainly affects pre-built buyers.

Frequently asked questions

How much RAM can the Intel NUC 13 Pro take?

Up to 64 GB total, using two 32 GB DDR4 SO-DIMMs. Each slot takes a maximum of 32 GB.

Does the NUC 13 Pro support DDR5?

No. It uses DDR4 SO-DIMMs at 1.2 V only. DDR5 modules and full-size desktop DIMMs are not supported.

Can I upgrade the CPU in the NUC 13 Pro Kit?

No. The processor is soldered to the board and cannot be replaced. Choose your SKU (i3-1315U, i5-1340P or i7-1360P, plus vPro variants) when you buy.

Does the NUC 13 Pro support ECC memory?

No. It needs non-ECC, unbuffered DDR4 SO-DIMMs.

Can I add a 2.5-inch SSD or hard drive?

Only in the tall (H) chassis, which includes the 2.5-inch SATA bay and the SATA cable. The bay accepts 7 mm drives only. The slim chassis and the Desk Edition are documented without the 2.5-inch bay.

Why won't my 16 GB or 32 GB memory stick boot?

Older modules built with 2 Gb or 4 Gb-density DRAM are not supported - the NUC 13 Pro requires 8 Gb or 16 Gb density. If a stick fails to POST, check its DRAM density and compare against Intel's Product Compatibility Tool.
