HPE ProLiant MicroServer Gen10 Plus Upgrade Guide: RAM and Storage

Updated Oct. 9, 2026 · Written from this device's verified specifications

This guide covers the memory and drive upgrades for the HPE ProLiant MicroServer Gen10 Plus. The short answer: you can fit up to 32 GB of ECC unbuffered DDR4 in two slots and four SATA drives in the front bays. There is no documented M.2 or NVMe slot, and no documented CPU upgrade path.

At a glance

  • RAM: 2 DIMM slots (2A and 1B), ECC unbuffered DDR4 only, up to 16 GB per module and 32 GB total.
  • Memory speed depends on the CPU: 2400 MT/s on Pentium Gold models, up to 2666 MT/s on Xeon E models.
  • Storage: 4 non-hot-plug SATA bays, 3.5-inch by default; 2.5-inch drives need the HPE SFF converter kit.
  • No M.2, NVMe or memory card slots are documented; the only expansion slot is one low-profile PCIe 3.0 x16.
  • HPE's documents describe Pentium Gold and Xeon E variants but give no CPU upgrade guidance.

Lifecycle and support

No new BIOS, firmware or driver releases are planned, so a newer CPU may not be recognised. Support continues until March 2030 (estimate).

Memory (RAM) upgrades

The server has two DIMM slots, labelled 2A and 1B. They take full-size DDR4 unbuffered ECC DIMMs (UDIMMs), PC4-2666 class. Each module can be up to 16 GB, so the maximum is 32 GB as 2 x 16 GB.

HPE lists these configurations: 8 GB in slot 2A only, 16 GB in 2A only, 8 GB + 8 GB, and 16 GB + 16 GB. A mixed 16 GB + 8 GB pairing is not listed. If you are fitting a single module, use slot 2A first, then 1B.

Speed depends on your processor. Pentium Gold models run memory at up to 2400 MT/s, and Xeon E models at up to 2666 MT/s. 2666 MT/s modules in a Pentium model will simply run at 2400 MT/s. HPE's own kits are an 8 GB single-rank and a 16 GB dual-rank DDR4-2666 CAS-19 module. HPE recommends HPE-qualified DIMMs, and third-party modules aren't covered in HPE's documents.

Buying tips

  • Buy ECC unbuffered DDR4 UDIMMs only. Regular non-ECC desktop RAM, RDIMMs and LRDIMMs are not supported.
  • Don't buy laptop SO-DIMMs; this server uses full-size DIMMs.
  • Buy a matched pair for 8 GB + 8 GB or 16 GB + 16 GB rather than mixing sizes.
  • On a Pentium model, there's no benefit in paying extra for 2666 MT/s modules.

Storage and drive upgrades

Behind the front bezel are four non-hot-plug drive bays (positions 1 to 4) for SATA hard drives or SATA SSDs. Because they are non-hot-plug, power the server off before swapping any drive. Bays are 3.5-inch LFF by default. To use 2.5-inch SSDs or drives, you need the HPE MicroServer Gen10 SFF NHP SATA Converter Kit (8702132-B21).

Drives connect to either the onboard S100i controller or the optional E208i-p SR Smart Array controller. HPE's service guide has cabling sections for both.

HPE's current option list tops out at 16 TB (4 x 4 TB 3.5-inch SATA HDD), or 960 GB with 2.5-inch SSDs (4 x 240 GB). HPE's QuickSpecs say these maximums can change with the server's option support plan, so larger drives may work but are not officially listed. Drive thickness limits aren't stated in HPE's documents.

There is no documented M.2 or NVMe slot and no memory card slot. The only expansion slot is one low-profile (half-height, half-length) PCIe 3.0 x16 slot on the riser. There is also an iLO module slot, which is for the iLO enablement option and not for storage.

Buying tips

  • Buy SATA drives only; the bays are SATA.
  • If you want 2.5-inch SSDs, add the SFF converter kit to your order.
  • Larger-than-listed 3.5-inch drives may work, but HPE doesn't list them, so check return terms.
  • Don't buy an M.2 or NVMe drive expecting a slot; none is documented.

How to upgrade

Before you start

  • Back up anything important on the server's current drives.
  • Check which processor your unit has (Pentium Gold or Xeon E), as it sets your memory speed.
  • Have the owner's manual or HPE service guide to hand for exact disassembly steps.
  • Confirm your parts: ECC unbuffered DDR4 DIMMs, and the converter kit if you're fitting 2.5-inch drives.
  • Work on a clean, static-safe surface.

Steps

  1. Back up your data
Copy important files and configuration to another device before opening the server.
  2. Power off and unplug
Shut the server down fully and disconnect the power cable and any other cables.
  3. Ground yourself
Touch bare metal or use an anti-static wrist strap before handling memory or drives.
  4. Open the case
Follow the HPE user guide or service guide for how to remove the front bezel and access the case. The drive bays are behind the front bezel.
  5. Install the memory
Fit ECC UDIMMs in slot 2A first, then slot 1B if you're adding a second module. Press each module in until it seats fully.
  6. Install the drives
Fit 3.5-inch drives directly in the bays. For 2.5-inch drives, install them using the HPE SFF converter kit. Power the server off before any drive swap, as the bays are not hot-plug.
  7. Close the case and reconnect
Refit the covers and bezel, then reconnect the cables.
  8. Check that the server sees the new parts
Power on and confirm the new memory and drives appear in the BIOS or firmware screens. If memory is missing, power down and re-seat the modules.

Good to know

  • HPE's 16 TB and 960 GB storage figures come from its current option list and can change; larger drives may work but aren't officially listed.
  • HPE's documents don't state drive thickness limits.
  • Pentium Gold models cap memory at 2400 MT/s; only Xeon E models run at 2666 MT/s.
  • HPE recommends HPE-qualified DIMMs; third-party modules aren't covered in its documents.
  • HPE's documents don't describe a CPU upgrade, so we can't say whether the processor can be changed.
  • The iLO module is an add-on option, so check whether your unit includes it.

Frequently asked questions

How much RAM can the HPE ProLiant MicroServer Gen10 Plus take?

Up to 32 GB, as two 16 GB ECC unbuffered DDR4 DIMMs. Supported setups are 8 GB or 16 GB in slot 2A alone, or matched pairs of 8 GB or 16 GB.

Can I use regular desktop (non-ECC) RAM?

No. Only ECC unbuffered DIMMs are supported. Non-ECC UDIMMs, RDIMMs and LRDIMMs are not.

Does it support M.2 or NVMe SSDs?

No M.2 or NVMe slots are documented. Storage is four SATA bays, and the only expansion slot is one low-profile PCIe 3.0 x16.

Can I fit 2.5-inch SSDs?

Yes, with the HPE MicroServer Gen10 SFF NHP SATA Converter Kit (8702132-B21). The bays are 3.5-inch by default.

What is the biggest drive it supports?

HPE's current option list shows 16 TB total (4 x 4 TB 3.5-inch SATA HDD). Larger drives may work, but they aren't officially listed.

Can I upgrade the CPU?

HPE's documents name Intel Pentium Gold and Xeon E variants but don't describe a CPU upgrade procedure, so we can't confirm that it is possible. Check HPE's service guide before buying a processor.
