No CPU slot: the processor is soldered BGA (8th-Gen Coffee Lake-H, 45 W — Core i5-8300H/8400H, i7-8750H/8850H, Xeon E-2176M/E-2186M, CM246 chipset on Xeon models). CPU and discrete GPU are both non-replaceable, so buy the tier you need. All RAM is modular (none soldered).

4 SO-DIMM slots exist but only 2 are customer-accessible; the other 2 need top-deck removal. Update BIOS before installing RAM. 128 GB (32 GB modules, non-ECC) only on Core models per HP TDS/Kingston; Xeon models require unbuffered ECC and cap at 64 GB, and ECC/non-ECC cannot be mixed. Rated 2666 MT/s but may drop to 2400/2133 with more DIMMs; use matched pairs.

Both M.2 2280 slots take SATA-3 or PCIe NVMe Gen3 x4 SSDs (HP lists 2 TB max per slot); no minimum PCIe generation is mandated. The 2.5" bay is optional (omitted if a PCIe SSD is primary) and takes 7 or 9.5 mm drives. The 16 GB Optane cache works only with a 2.5" HDD. RAID 0/1 is supported only across SATA drives.
