HP Z2 Small Form Factor G5 Workstation upgrades

Released 2020 · on sale

CPU is socketed (LGA-1200), so it is upgradable within 10th Gen Comet Lake; no memory is soldered (4 free DIMM slots). ECC availability depends on CPU/Xeon W config rather than the board. PCIe add-in cards must be low-profile, half-length (HP restricts the x16 slot to certified cards). SKUs differ in ODD and SD-reader fitment. Set the cpu_families value above to intel_comet_lake if your schema uses that naming.

DDR4 UDIMM, 4 slots (128 GB max) 4 × DDR4 DIMM · up to 128 GB total · 2933 MT/s

Unbuffered 288-pin DDR4 UDIMM only; ×4-device DIMMs and RDIMM unsupported. CPU sets speed: 2933 MT/s (i7/i9/Xeon), 2666 MT/s (i3/i5-10400/10500/10600), even with DDR4-3200 modules. ECC works only on Xeon W-1250/1270/1290 (P); Core CPUs are non-ECC and 65 W systems are non-ECC only. Fill in pairs for dual-channel; 128 GB needs 64-bit OS.

2x M.2 2280 PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe (2230/2242/2260 also fit); the 30 mm M.2 slot is WLAN/CNVi only, NOT storage. Bays: 2x 3.5" (one shared internal/external), 1x 2.5" SSD-only, 1x 9.5 mm slim ODD bay, 4x SATA 6 Gb/s. With K-series or Xeon W-x50P CPUs only ONE SATA device is allowed. HP validates up to 2 TB per drive; larger drives untested.

LGA-1200 socket (10th Gen Intel) LGA1200 · Ryzen 3000 · max 125 W

CPU family: intel_comet_lake (10th Gen only). W480 chipset with single replaceable LGA-1200 socket: Core i3-10300/10320, i5-10400(F)/10500/10600(K), i7-10700(K), i9-10850K/10900(F/K), Xeon W-1250/1270/1290 (P). 11th Gen Rocket Lake is NOT supported. Max 125 W (K-series/Xeon-P); those high-power CPUs cut SATA storage to one drive.
