HP Z2 G4 Tower Workstation upgrades

Released 2018 · on sale

Tower chassis only. The Z2 G4 SFF is a different machine (2 DIMM slots, 64 GB max, 2.5"-only storage) despite sharing the name. Also present but not upgrade slots: 1x M.2 2230 WLAN slot (PCIe Gen3 x1 + CNVi) and an optional front SD card reader. HP supports only HP-qualified PCIe cards on the Gen3 x16 slot for warranty purposes.

4x DDR4 DIMM (UDIMM), 128 GB max 4 × DDR4 DIMM · up to 128 GB total · 2666 MT/s

Desktop DIMMs (not SO-DIMM), unbuffered UDIMM only - no RDIMM/LRDIMM. ECC vs non-ECC is CPU-dependent: Xeon E/i3/Pentium accept either, Core i5/i7/i9 are non-ECC only; never mix types. 2400 MT/s CPUs (i3-8100, G5400) cap RAM at 2400 regardless of DIMM rating. HP validated 32 GB DIMMs / 128 GB total although Intel's spec tops at 64 GB, so third-party 32 GB DIMMs aren't guaranteed. Install matched pairs (DIMM1&3, DIMM2&4).

2x 3.5" + 2x 5.25" bays, 2x M.2 NVMe (<=110mm) 6 × SSD / HDD 3.5" / M.2 2242 / M.2 2260 / M.2 2280 / M.2 22110 (SATA / NVMe)

4 SATA 6 Gb/s ports total (one can be routed eSATA); the ODD consumes one if fitted, so a 3rd/4th SATA drive needs a 5.25"-to-3.5" carrier in a half-height external 5.25" bay - add a PCIe HBA beyond that. M.2 slots are PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe, drives <=110 mm; M.2 SATA support is not documented - verify before buying. No per-bay capacity limit published. Intel RST RAID 0/1/5/10 (RAID 5 discouraged over 500 GB).

LGA1151v2 (C246), 8th/9th-gen Intel LGA1151 (8th/9th gen) · Core 8th gen, Core 9th gen

Single socketed LGA 1151 (Coffee Lake / 8th-9th gen) on Intel C246: Core i3-i9, Pentium Gold, Xeon E-2100/E-2200. Update BIOS before installing a 9th-gen or Xeon E-22xx CPU - early BIOS only supports 8th-gen/E-2100. A Xeon/i3/Pentium swap unlocks ECC memory support. No numeric TDP cap published, but validated parts reach 95 W (i9-9900K, i7-9700K, Xeon E-2286G) - ensure the unit has the higher-performance heatsink. Core i-series configs are Windows 10-only per HP.
