HP Victus 15L Gaming Desktop TG02 upgrade guide: RAM, SSD and CPU
Updated Oct. 18, 2026 · Written from this device's verified specifications
The HP Victus 15L Gaming Desktop TG02 (TG02-0000 / TG02-0xxx) is one of the friendlier prebuilts to upgrade: memory is socketed, the CPU is socketed, and there is room for a bigger SSD plus a SATA hard drive. Before you buy anything, though, find your exact sub-model, because this family ships on two completely different motherboards. Intel machines (for example TG02-0000ny, TG02-0020, TG02-0044ns and later TG02-2003ne) use the 'Reno2' Intel H670 board with an LGA1700 socket. AMD machines (for example TG02-0002na) use a B550 board with an AM4 socket. The RAM and storage story is the same on both; the CPU upgrades are not. Check the sticker on the case or the label in HP's support pages for your model number first.
At a glance
- Two variants: Intel H670/LGA1700 or AMD B550/AM4 - know yours before buying a CPU.
- RAM: 2 x DDR4-3200 desktop DIMMs, nothing soldered, 32 GB validated by HP and Kingston (64 GB reported working but unvalidated).
- Storage: one M.2 2280 NVMe slot plus one free 3.5in SATA bay; the second M.2 socket is the Wi-Fi card, not storage.
- CPU: socketed on both variants, but stay around 65 W; the 400-500 W PSU and the stock cooler set the limit.
- No XMP/EXPO in the HP BIOS, so faster memory kits simply run slower.

RAM upgrade
The Victus 15L TG02 has two full-size 288-pin DDR4 DIMM slots (desktop modules, not laptop SO-DIMMs) running DDR4-3200 in dual channel. Nothing is soldered, so whatever is installed can come out again. The validated ceiling is 32 GB total as 2 x 16 GB; HP's specification sheets and Kingston's compatibility list agree on that. A 2 x 32 GB (64 GB) kit is reported to work by owners on HP's own support forum, but HP has never validated it, so treat 64 GB as 'likely works, officially unsupported'. Modules must be non-ECC and unbuffered. Memory runs at DDR4-3200 (PC4-25600, CL22, 1.2 V class kits on Kingston's list), and there is no XMP or EXPO option in the HP BIOS - a DDR4-3600 or faster kit will just clock down, so don't pay extra for speed you cannot select. Kingston's validated parts include KCP432NS8/8, KCP432ND8/16 and KCP432NS8/16 in 288-pin DDR4-3200.
Buying tips
- Buy a matched pair (2 x 8 GB or 2 x 16 GB); a single stick runs single-channel and costs gaming performance.
- Plain DDR4-3200 CL22 non-ECC unbuffered kits are the sweet spot; skip anything advertised for XMP tuning.
- Community feedback favours dual-rank (2Rx8) 16 GB modules if you can find them.
Storage upgrade
There are two storage options and one trap. The M.2 slot for an SSD is a single Key-M 2280 slot using PCIe NVMe, and double-sided (thicker) M.2 drives are fine. That is the only storage M.2 in the machine: the second M.2 socket is a short 2230 slot holding the WLAN card (a Realtek RTL8822CE Wi-Fi 5 card on the TG02-0000ny), so it cannot take a second SSD. Beyond the M.2 drive there is one free 3.5in SATA bay, which is where factory configs put an optional 1 TB 7200 rpm hard drive. There is no dedicated 2.5in bay, so a 2.5in SATA SSD needs a bracket or caddy to sit in the 3.5in bay. HP lists no maximum drive capacity, and M.2 SATA drives are not documented as supported; stick to PCIe NVMe. Kingston's compatibility list even includes PCIe 5.0 NVMe drives, which will simply run at whatever link speed the slot provides. There is no memory card reader on this model. Expansion otherwise is one PCIe x16 and one PCIe x1 slot.
Buying tips
- For speed, replace or upgrade the single M.2 2280 NVMe drive; there is no second M.2 for storage.
- For cheap bulk space, add a 3.5in SATA hard drive in the free bay, or a 2.5in SATA SSD with a 3.5in bracket.
- Check your power and SATA leads before buying a second SATA drive - factory SSD + HDD configs show the bay is wired up, but your unit may differ.
CPU upgrade
The CPU is socketed on both variants, but which chips fit depends entirely on the motherboard in your machine. Both boards are limited to roughly 65 W parts: HP's stock processors are 65 W, and the VRM, the stock cooler and the 400-500 W power supply all point to staying at that class. HP does not name a maximum CPU in its documents, so these are guidance rather than a guaranteed supported list - check your BIOS version and HP's processor documentation before ordering.
Buying tips
- Match the CPU to your board: LGA1700 for Intel machines, AM4 for AMD machines.
- Stay with 65 W non-K chips such as the i5-12400 / i7-12700 class or the Ryzen 5000 G-series.
- Before buying, update the BIOS to the latest version, and verify the specific chip is listed for your sub-model.
How to upgrade
Before you start
- Back up anything you care about, especially if you are swapping the boot drive.
- Shut down fully, switch off at the PSU if it has a switch, and unplug the power cable and everything else.
- Ground yourself - touch the metal chassis or use an anti-static strap - before handling parts.
- Open the case. HP's owner's manual for the Victus 15L TG02 shows the exact panel removal for your sub-model; follow it rather than forcing clips.
- Install the part, using the correct slot or bay, and make any required BIOS update first if you are upgrading the CPU.
- Close the case, reconnect the power, start up and enter the BIOS/firmware to confirm it detects the new memory, drive or processor, then boot into the operating system and check again.
Steps
- RAM
Release the DIMM latches at both ends of each slot, align the notch on the module with the key in the slot, and press down evenly until the latches click. Fill both slots with a matched pair for dual channel. The owner's manual covers the case opening for your exact model. - Storage
For the M.2 drive, fit the 2280 module in the storage Key-M slot and secure it as shown in the owner's manual - it is a different socket from the 2230 Wi-Fi card, so don't confuse the two. For the 3.5in bay, mount the drive in the bay (with a bracket if it is a 2.5in SSD) and connect a SATA data lead and a power lead. Then confirm in the BIOS that the drive appears before you clone or install an operating system. - CPU
Update the BIOS to the latest version before fitting a newer processor - 13th and 14th Gen Intel parts need a later BIOS and later boards than early TG02 units shipped with. Unlatch the socket retention mechanism, lift the old chip out, line up the new one carefully, close the retention arm, refit the cooler and reconnect its fan. If the machine does not boot afterwards, check that the cooler is seated and that the chip is one your BIOS supports.
Good to know
- Only buy parts after confirming your exact sub-model: TG02 units exist on both Intel H670/LGA1700 and AMD B550/AM4 boards, and CPUs are not interchangeable between them.
- HP validates 32 GB of RAM; 64 GB is an owner-reported result with no HP validation.
- HP does not publish a supported CPU list for every sub-model, so BIOS version and board revision matter as much as the socket.
- The 400-500 W power supply and the stock cooler are the practical limits on both CPU and GPU upgrades.
Frequently asked questions
How much RAM can the HP Victus 15L TG02 take?
HP and Kingston validate 32 GB as 2 x 16 GB DDR4-3200. Owners on HP's support forum report 2 x 32 GB (64 GB) working, but HP has not validated that, so buy at your own risk if you need more than 32 GB.
Does the Victus 15L TG02 support DDR4-3600 or RGB XMP memory?
There is no XMP or EXPO option in the HP BIOS. Faster modules will clock down to DDR4-3200 or to whatever the CPU supports, so plain DDR4-3200 CL22 non-ECC unbuffered kits are the sensible buy.
Can I add a second M.2 SSD?
No. There is one M.2 2280 Key-M NVMe slot for storage. The other M.2 socket is a short 2230 slot used by the Wi-Fi card, not a storage slot. Extra capacity comes from the free 3.5in SATA bay.
Which CPUs fit the Victus 15L TG02?
It depends on the board. Intel models use the H670 'Reno2' board with an LGA1700 socket: 12th Gen Core chips work from early BIOS, while 13th and 14th Gen parts need a later BIOS and later boards - HP ships i5-13400(F) and i7-14700F class chips on newer units. AMD models use a B550 board with an AM4 socket, and HP documents only the Ryzen 5000 G-series APUs (5300G, 5600G, 5700G). Other Ryzen chips are not validated by HP, so check BIOS support first.
Do 'F' Intel CPUs work in the TG02?
They can, but note that 'F' processors have no integrated graphics, so the machine must have a discrete graphics card to display anything. Also, the H670 board does not support CPU multiplier overclocking, so K-series chips offer little extra here.
Can I upgrade the graphics card or power supply?
The power supply is 400-500 W depending on the configuration, which is the practical limit on high-end graphics card swaps. Check that your unit has the right PCIe power lead for any card you are considering. This page covers RAM, storage and CPU; the PSU also constrains CPU choices to the 65 W class.
