HP ProDesk 400 G7 Small Form Factor PC upgrades

Released 2020 · end of sale · supported until 2028 (estimate)

HP ProDesk 400 G7 SFF (Q470, LGA 1200). RAM/storage are user-upgradeable; the CPU is socketed but only sold by HP as a service spare. Beware the shared HP Maintenance & Service Guide, which quotes 4 DIMM slots / 128 GB and extra PCIe slots that belong to the larger 600-class/MT boards — HP's 400 G7 SFF data sheets consistently say 2 DIMM / 64 GB and 1× PCIe 3.0 x16 + 1× PCIe 3.0 x1 (low-profile cards only). Storage is an either/or: 3.5" bay or 2.5" bays. Verify physically before buying RAM, risers or drive brackets.

2× DDR4 UDIMM slots, 64 GB max 2 × DDR4 DIMM · up to 64 GB total · 3200 MT/s

Unbuffered non-ECC DDR4 only with JEDEC SPD (CL17, 1.2 V); x4-chip and RDIMM/ECC modules are unsupported. All 2 slots are user-accessible. Speed is CPU-bound: Core i7 runs 2933 MT/s, Celeron/Pentium/i3/i5 cap at 2666 MT/s, so DDR4-3200 modules are accepted but down-clocked. Buy matched pairs for dual-channel. Note: the shared HP MSG mentions 4 slots/128 GB, but HP's own 400 G7 SFF data sheets say 2 slots/64 GB.

M.2 2280 NVMe + SATA 3.5"/2.5" bays 3 × SSD / HDD M.2 2280 / 3.5" / 2.5" (NVMe / SATA)

One M.2 2280 M-key slot (PCIe Gen 3 x4 NVMe, bootable); Gen 4/5 drives work but only at Gen 3 speeds. The second M.2 (2230) is Wi-Fi only, not storage. Internal bay is either one 3.5" drive OR two 2.5" drives (choose one layout, 2.5" holder may need HP bracket). SATA is 6 Gb/s. Factory maxima were 2 TB SATA / 1 TB M.2, but no official aftermarket cap is documented. Optical bay is 9.5 mm slim.

LGA 1200, 10th Gen Intel only, 65 W max LGA1200 · Core 10th gen, Core 10th gen · max 65 W

Socketed LGA 1200 with Q470 chipset; HP only supports 10th Gen Comet Lake (i7-10700, i5-10600/10500/10400, i3-10300/10100, Pentium G6500/G6400, Celeron G5900). 11th Gen Rocket Lake is NOT supported. 65 W is the ceiling (SFF cooler + 180/250 W PSU); no K-series or 125 W parts. CPUs are HP service spares, so buy OEM chips and check BIOS support.
