HP EliteBook 850 G8 Notebook PC upgrades
Released 2020 · end of sale · supported until Oct. 21, 2027 (estimate)
CPU is soldered (BGA) Tiger Lake-UP3 (i5-1135G7/1145G7, i7-1165G7/1185G7) and cannot be upgraded — no CPU slot. Two SO-DIMM slots and one M.2 NVMe bay are the only user-upgradeable slots; optional WWAN and WLAN use separate internal M.2 modules that are not storage bays. Thermal throttling limits sustained CPU load to ~20 W (PL1) despite ~50 W bursts. SKU options (e.g. smart card reader, NFC, WWAN) vary by part number — verify the exact configuration.

2× DDR4 SO-DIMM (up to 64 GB, 3200 MT/s) 2 × DDR4 SO-DIMM · up to 64 GB total · 3200 MT/s
260-pin DDR4-3200 SO-DIMMs, non-ECC unbuffered only (1.2 V). Two slots, no soldered RAM. Buy matched pairs for dual-channel mode — single-stick configs run single-channel and Intel Iris Xe graphics performance drops noticeably. If speeds are mixed, both sticks run at the slower speed. Under a metal bracket; base cover is easy to remove. HP recommends HP-branded modules due to third-party module quirks.

1× M.2 2280 PCIe NVMe (Gen3 ×4) SSD M.2 2280 (NVMe) · up to 2.048 TB
Single M.2 2280 M-key slot, single-sided drive, ~2.3 mm height — double-sided/thick heatsink drives may not fit. PCIe Gen3 ×4 only, so Gen4/Gen5 drives give no speed benefit (they work but run at Gen3). No SATA or 2.5" bay — upgrades mean replacing/cloning the boot drive. 2 TB is HP's largest factory option; larger 2280 NVMe drives generally work. Avoid the slow Gen3 ×2 entry SSDs if speed matters.
