HP EliteBook 840 G8 Notebook PC upgrades

Released 2020 · on sale

CPU is soldered (BGA, 11th-Gen Intel Tiger Lake-UP3: i5-1135G7/i5-1145G7/i7-1165G7/i7-1185G7, cTDP 12-28 W) — no CPU slot and no CPU upgrade possible. RAM and SSD are user-serviceable: remove the bottom cover (Torx/Phillips) and disconnect the internal battery first per HP's maintenance guide. Regional SKUs (2J3M3EA, 2J3M7UT, 5Z5B5EA...) differ in CPU, panel, WWAN and smart-card options, but share the same 2-slot RAM and 1-slot M.2 storage limits.

2x DDR4-3200 SO-DIMM (non-ECC, unbuffered) 2 × DDR4 SO-DIMM · up to 64 GB total · 3200 MT/s

Both slots are user-accessible; 64 GB max (2x32). Non-ECC unbuffered only. Slower 2933/2666 modules work at their rated speed. Buy matched pairs for dual-channel — many SKUs ship 1x16 GB. Note: some marketing sheets list '1 memory slot' for the shipped config; the service manual confirms 2 physical slots.

1x M.2 2280 NVMe (PCIe Gen3 x4) SSD M.2 2280 (NVMe) · up to 2.048 TB

Only one storage slot: M-key M.2 2280 PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe. HP validates up to 2 TB (single-sided drives per HP part specs); larger modules may work but are unvalidated. No SATA or 2.5" bay — plan on cloning via a USB enclosure. Prefer single-sided drives (~2.3 mm) for cover clearance. WLAN (A/E-key) and WWAN (B-key) M.2 slots are not storage slots. Optane H10 configs need Intel RST/Optane drivers.
