HP EliteBook 840 G7 Notebook PC upgrades
Released 2020 · support ended
CPU is BGA-soldered (10th Gen Intel Comet Lake-U, i5/i7-10x10U/10x0U) — no CPU socket, no processor upgrade possible, so no CPU slot is listed. One retailer lists '1x SO-DIMM', but that describes a single shipped configuration; HP's QuickSpecs and service manual confirm 2 physical slots. Some configs include a microSD-class card reader; availability varies by region. Check your unit's current RAM/drive layout before buying parts — machines ship with 1 or 2 modules populated.

- 2x DDR4-2666 SO-DIMM, up to 32 GB per slot: 2 × DDR4 SO-DIMM · up to 64 GB total · 2666 MT/s
- 1x M.2 2280 slot (NVMe Gen3 or M.2 SATA): SSD M.2 2280 (NVMe / SATA) · up to 1.024 TB

2x DDR4-2666 SO-DIMM, up to 32 GB per slot 2 × DDR4 SO-DIMM · up to 64 GB total · 2666 MT/s
Both SO-DIMMs are user-accessible; no memory is soldered. Non-ECC unbuffered DDR4 only. DDR4-3200 modules work but clock down to 2666 (per CPU); mixing speeds runs everything at the slower rate. Install matched pairs for dual-channel. 32 GB modules are supported (64 GB total) — use guaranteed parts such as Kingston KCP432SD8/32.

1x M.2 2280 slot (NVMe Gen3 or M.2 SATA) SSD M.2 2280 (NVMe / SATA) · up to 1.024 TB
Single-sided 2280 modules only (2.3 mm) — double-sided or 2230/2242 drives don't fit without an adapter. Slot accepts M.2 SATA or PCIe NVMe Gen3 (incl. Gen3x4 and the obsolete Optane H10 hybrid). HP's documented maximum is a 1 TB NVMe drive; larger untested. The M.2 WWAN slot is for a cellular modem, not a second SSD. HP's 1 TB figure uses GB = 10^9 bytes.
