HP EliteBook 840 G6 upgrades
Released 2019 · on sale
CPU is soldered (BGA 1528 Whiskey Lake - i5-8265U/8365U, i7-8565U/8665U) so there is no CPU slot and no processor upgrade path; buy the CPU you need upfront. RAM ceiling is 32 GB per HP's service guide despite one QuickSpec PDF claiming 64 GB. Single drive bay only. Card reader and WWAN slot presence is configuration-dependent - verify against your unit's product number on HP's support page. Service guide covers both EliteBook 840 G6 and 846 G6 (same slots).

- 2 × DDR4 SO-DIMM (260-pin), up to 32 GB: 2 × DDR4 SO-DIMM · up to 32 GB total · 2400 MT/s
- 1 × M.2 2280 (NVMe or SATA): SSD M.2 2280 (NVMe / SATA) · up to 2.048 TB
2 × DDR4 SO-DIMM (260-pin), up to 32 GB 2 × DDR4 SO-DIMM · up to 32 GB total · 2400 MT/s
Both SO-DIMM slots are free (no soldered RAM). Requires non-ECC unbuffered DDR4 SO-DIMMs. HP spec caps at 32 GB (2 x 16 GB), though one QuickSpec PDF claims 64 GB (2 x 32 GB) which contradicts the service guide and Intel ARK (32 GB). DDR4-2666/3200 modules work but run at 2400 MT/s.

1 × M.2 2280 (NVMe or SATA) SSD M.2 2280 (NVMe / SATA) · up to 2.048 TB
Single M.2 2280 slot accepting PCIe NVMe Gen3 x4 or M.2 SATA-3. Only 2280 is officially documented; 2242/2260 would need an unlisted adapter. HP supports up to 2 TB (larger 4 TB drives may work but are out of spec). Check clearance before using double-sided modules - HP lists single-sided drives. No 2.5" bay or second M.2 slot.
