Gigabyte Z890 Gaming X Wifi7 upgrades

Released 2024 · on sale

ATX desktop board (305 x 244 mm); nothing is soldered - CPU is socketed (LGA1851) and all four RAM slots are free sockets. Memory is user-upgradable, dual-channel, DDR5-only. Peak memory speed claims differ between sources: 6400 MT/s official baseline, 8600 MHz (AORUS store) and 8800 MHz OC (Memory Express); the 2800-4600 MHz figure on jacob.de is erroneous DDR4-era data and was disregarded.

4x DDR5 DIMM (dual-channel), up to 256 GB 4 × DDR5 DIMM · up to 256 GB total · 8800 MT/s

Unbuffered DDR5 DIMMs only (no DDR4, no RDIMM). 6400 MT/s is the guaranteed baseline; 8600-8800 are XMP/OC targets that depend on CPU IMC, module count and BIOS. Single-channel with one stick - use 2 or 4 matched modules. ECC UDIMMs physically fit but run in non-ECC mode, so no true ECC. Speed drops when both DIMMs per channel are populated.

Count = 4 M.2 (Socket 3, M key) + 4 SATA 6 Gb/s ports. M2A_CPU is the only PCIe 5.0 x4 slot and the only one accepting 2580/25110 wide drives (25 mm wide - check heatsink clearance). M2M_SB is the only SATA-capable M.2 slot; other three are NVMe PCIe 4.0 x4. RAID 0/1/5/10, but an M.2 PCIe SSD cannot join a RAID set with a SATA M.2/HDD. No per-drive capacity limit documented - verify large drives on GIGABYTE's support list. No 2.5"/3.5" bays on the board (case-dependent).

LGA1851 - Intel Core Ultra Series 2 (Arrow Lake-S) LGA1851 · Core Ultra 200S

Socketed and replaceable (Socket V1 / LGA1851), but platform-locked: only Core Ultra Processors Series 2 (Arrow Lake-S) - no upgrade path from LGA1700 12th-14th Gen parts. No board-level TDP ceiling is documented by GIGABYTE; the Z890 platform targets unlocked K-series parts, but confirm the exact chip on GIGABYTE's CPU support list.
