Dell XPS 15 9560 upgrades

Released 2017 · support ended

Dell XPS 15 9560 (Kaby Lake, HM175 chipset). The CPU is soldered (BGA) and not upgradeable - factory options were 7th Gen Core i3-7100H / i5-7300HQ / i7-7700HQ (45 W max), with no BIOS support for 8th-gen or newer chips. Full-size SD card reader is UHS-I (not UHS-II), not a storage bay. RAM and drives are user-serviceable per the Dell service manual.

2x DDR4 SO-DIMM slots (260-pin, 2400 MT/s) 2 × DDR4 SO-DIMM · up to 32 GB total · 2400 MT/s

Both slots are user-accessible; no memory is soldered. DDR4-2400 is the fastest native speed - 2666/3200 MT/s modules work but are downclocked to 2400 by the CPU memory controller, so buy cheap 2400 CL15/CL17 sticks. Use a matched pair for dual-channel (single sticks cost iGPU bandwidth). 32 GB (2x16) is Dell's validated maximum; 64 GB is not officially supported.

M.2 2280 NVMe (Gen3) + optional 2.5" SATA bay 2 × SSD / HDD M.2 2280 / 2.5" (NVMe / SATA) · max 7 mm thick · up to 1.024 TB

One M.2 2280 slot (PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe, also accepts M.2 SATA) plus one 2.5" SATA III bay limited to 7 mm height - the 2.5" bay exists only with the 56 Wh battery; 97 Wh models are M.2-only and lack the caddy/cable. Gen4/5 SSDs fit but run at Gen3 speed (~3,500 MB/s). Dell's official configs topped out at 1 TB per drive; larger drives (2 TB+ M.2, 2-4 TB 2.5") generally work but are unvalidated.
