Dell Precision 7530 upgrades
Released 2018 · on sale
CPU is soldered (BGA 1440, Intel CM246, 8th-gen Coffee Lake-H only, 45 W) - no CPU slot and no upgrade path, not even to 9th-gen; GPU is soldered too. Buy the CPU/GPU tier you need up front. Configure-to-order machine (RAM, storage, GPU, display vary by unit) - check the service tag. SD UHS-II reader and optional smart-card reader are not storage bays; the M.2 2230 slot is for WLAN only.

RAM: 4x DDR4 SO-DIMM slots, up to 128 GB 4 × DDR4 SO-DIMM · up to 128 GB total · 2666 MT/s
No soldered RAM; 4x user-accessible 260-pin SO-DIMMs. 128 GB = 4x32 GB non-ECC (Core i5/i7/i9). ECC only works with Xeon E-2176M/E-2186M and is limited to 64 GB (4x16 GB), unbuffered only - no RDIMM/LRDIMM. 2666 MHz official, 2400 MHz works downclocked. Update BIOS before installing 32 GB modules.

Storage: 3x M.2 2280 NVMe or 2x M.2 + 2.5" SATA 3 × SSD / HDD M.2 2280 / 2.5" (NVMe / SATA) · max 7 mm thick · up to 2.048 TB
Three physical positions, all M.2 2280 PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe; the 2.5" SATA bay (7 mm thick) replaces one M.2 and needs the Dell bracket + cable, frequently missing on used units. Only 2280 (80 mm) drives fit - no 2230/2242/2260 without a third-party bracket. 2 TB per drive / ~6 TB total per Dell's config list. M.2 screws/heatsinks are easy to miss second-hand.
