Dell Precision 3640 Tower upgrades
Released 2020 · end of life
CPU is socketed (LGA 1200) but the upgrade path ends at Comet Lake — no Rocket Lake or later support. Memory is fully socketed (no soldered RAM). Note the third expansion slot is legacy PCI, not PCIe, and the GPU slot supplies only 75 W of slot power. Optional front SD-card reader exists on some SKUs only. A 3rd M.2 requires the proprietary Dell Ultra-Speed Drive interposer card.

Unbuffered UDIMM only; RDIMM/LRDIMM will not work. 2933 MHz needs i7/i9/Xeon W-1200P, else RAM runs at 2666. ECC works only with Xeon W-1200 (and i3-10100); i5/i7/i9 are non-ECC only. Install 2 or 4 sticks for dual channel. No XMP/OC on W480.

M.2 2280 NVMe slots (PCIe Gen3, 1 also SATA) 2 × SSD M.2 2280 (NVMe / SATA) · up to 2 TB
2280 only (no 2242/2260/22110 without an adapter); only one slot also accepts SATA M.2. Slots are PCIe 3.0, so Gen4/Gen5 drives work but cap near 3.5 GB/s. A 3rd M.2 needs the rare proprietary Dell Ultra-Speed Drive interposer (occupies an expansion slot). 2 TB is Dell's validated factory size, not a hard limit. The M.2 2230 E-key slot is Wi-Fi only.

10th Gen Comet Lake (Core i3/i5/i7/i9) and Xeon W-1250/W-1270/W-1290 (P = 125 W) only; 11th Gen is unsupported. Max TDP 125 W: upgrading a 65 W build to a K/P CPU needs Dell's higher-performance heatsink and a check of the 300/460/750 W PSU. K-series CPUs cannot overclock on W480. Xeon W-1200 enables ECC memory support.
