Dell PowerEdge T40 upgrades

Dell PowerEdge T40 mini-tower server, Intel C246 chipset, 300 W Bronze PSU. All memory is socketed (no soldered RAM). Storage is 3x 3.5" cabled SATA only — for NVMe boot add a PCIe adapter in the Gen3 x16 slot, noting the 25 W card limit, half-length card restriction, and no auxiliary power connectors. No hardware RAID, no hot-swap, no SD slot. Check the exact config when buying used: some regions shipped non-ECC variants with non-Xeon CPUs.

Unbuffered DDR4 1.2V x8 DIMMs only (not SO-DIMM, no RDIMM/LRDIMM). Dell's technical guide wants ECC, but the ISM and Kingston list ECC/Non-ECC support in some regions — don't mix the two types. Only 8 GB and 16 GB modules are validated, so 64 GB is the hard cap (no 32 GB support). May run at 2133 MT/s depending on CPU.

No hot-swap or backplane; drives cable straight to board SATA ports. Only one drive ships — 2nd/3rd bays need the Dell add-on kit (carrier + cable). 12 TB (3x 4 TB) is the documented max; larger drives unvalidated. Listed 2 TB/4 TB Seagate drives are SMR (poor for RAID/NAS writes). Software RAID (VROC) only. No M.2/NVMe at all.

Socket H4 (LGA1151, 300-series/C246) — 8th/9th-gen Intel silicon despite the LGA1151 name. Dell validates only the Xeon E-2224G (4C/4T, 71 W), which is the max TDP; other Coffee Lake Xeons fit physically but are typically blocked by BIOS. Kingston notes non-Xeon T40 configs (Core i3 8th/9th gen, Pentium) sold in some regions. Upgrade path is effectively closed.
