Dell PowerEdge R740xd upgrades
RAM is fully user-upgradable (24 DDR4 registered ECC slots), but storage bays depend on the drive-count variant. NVMe drives likely run at PCIe Gen3, though this is not stated by Dell's documents.
- DDR4 RDIMM/LRDIMM slots: 24 × DDR4 DIMM · up to 3.072 TB total · 2933 MT/s · registered (RDIMM) · ECC
- Front 2.5" drive bays (SAS/SATA/NVMe): 24 × HDD / SSD 2.5" (SATA / SAS / NVMe)
- Front 3.5" drive bays (SAS/SATA): 12 × HDD / SSD 3.5" (SATA / SAS)
- Mid drive bays (2.5" or 3.5"): 4 × HDD / SSD 2.5" / 3.5" (SATA / SAS / NVMe)
- Rear drive bays (2.5" or 3.5"): 4 × HDD / SSD 2.5" / 3.5" (SATA / SAS)
- BOSS card M.2 SATA slots: 2 × SSD M.2 2280 (SATA) · up to 480 GB
- IDSDM/vFlash microSD card slots: 3 × Flash card microSD (SD (UHS))
DDR4 RDIMM/LRDIMM slots 24 × DDR4 DIMM · up to 3.072 TB total · 2933 MT/s · registered (RDIMM) · ECC
Registered ECC only; unbuffered DIMMs are not supported. Do not mix RDIMM and LRDIMM. 3 TB needs two CPUs (one CPU gives half the slots and capacity). 2933 MT/s needs 2nd Gen Xeon Scalable; 1st Gen runs 2666. NVDIMM-N needs two CPUs. Not hot-pluggable.
