Dell PowerEdge R730xd upgrades

Released 2014 · support ended

Dell PowerEdge R730xd (2U dual-socket, 13th gen) with 24 DIMM slots and hot-swap SAS/SATA/NVMe storage bays. No M.2/U.2 slots and no soldered RAM or CPU — CPU is replaceable (LGA2011-3). R730xd parts are not interchangeable with the plain R730; check the exact backplane, risers and caddies on used units.

24x 288-pin DDR4 DIMM (RDIMM/LRDIMM only) 24 × DDR4 DIMM · up to 3.072 TB total · 2400 MT/s · registered (RDIMM) · ECC

12 per CPU; RDIMM/LRDIMM only (no UDIMM/non-ECC), do not mix types. 128 GB LRDIMM = 3,072 GB dual-CPU (1,536 GB single-CPU) is disputed: older Dell docs cap 64 GB/DIMM (1.5 TB), and 128 GB 3DS sticks need recent BIOS + Dell-tested modules. 3 DIMMs/channel and 128 GB LRDIMMs drop speed below 2400 MT/s; 2400 MT/s only with E5-2600 v4. Populate symmetrically (A1+B1).

Hot-swap SAS/SATA/NVMe 2.5"/3.5"/1.8" bays (14-28) 28 × SSD / HDD 2.5" / 3.5" / M.2 2230 (SAS / SATA / NVMe / SD (UHS) / SAS)

Bay count depends on the chassis/backplane SKU: 14 (12x3.5"+2 rear 2.5"), 18 (+4x3.5" mid), 26 (24x2.5"+2 rear), 26 NVMe (20x2.5"+4 Express Flash NVMe+2 rear), 28 (18x1.8" SSD+8x3.5"+2 rear). Caddies/cables not always included. Rear bays are SSD-only in 3.5" chassis. NVMe needs the specific NVMe backplane + cabling/riser (not convertible via software). No documented capacity cap; 2.5" bays take 7-15 mm drives (verify). Also vFlash SD slot + internal USB 3.0.

2x LGA2011-3, Xeon E5-2600 v3/v4 2 × LGA3647 · Xeon E-2300, Xeon E-2300 · max 120 W · install matching CPUs

Dual socket LGA2011-3 (Socket R3), C610 chipset. Supports Xeon E5-2600 v3 and v4; v4 CPUs may need a BIOS update on v3-era firmware. TDP cap is chassis-dependent: 120 W max in 3.5" chassis, 145 W max in 2.5" chassis (160 W+ never supported); extended conditions also require redundant PSUs and forbid >25 W non-Dell cards. Some PCIe slots need both CPUs installed.
