Dell PowerEdge R730 upgrades

Dual-socket 2U rack server (C610 chipset). With only one CPU installed, half the DIMM slots are inactive. Storage backplane (8x3.5" or 8/16x2.5") is fixed at purchase. R730 and R730xd have different bay counts - verify which model you are buying.

288-pin DDR4 ECC only: RDIMM (up to 64 GB) or LRDIMM (64/128 GB); UDIMM/desktop DIMMs will not work. 24 sockets but only 12 are live with one CPU (1.5 TB max). Do not mix RDIMM and LRDIMM. 3 TB needs 24x 128 GB LRDIMM on a current BIOS (older Dell docs say 1.5 TB); filling 3 DIMMs/channel with RDIMMs drops speed to 1866 MT/s. Fill white tabs first per CPU. DDR3 from R720 era is unusable.

2.5" hot-plug SAS/SATA bays (8 or 16) 16 × 2.5" (SAS / SATA) · up to 29 TB
Chassis ships with either 8 or 16 SFF bays and the backplane is a point-of-sale choice that cannot be changed later. Dell documents a 29 TB chassis max (16 x 1.8 TB 10K SAS = 28.8 TB). Drives need Dell-compatible hot-plug caddies. No M.2 and no native NVMe U.2 in documented configs - NVMe only via PCIe AIC adapters. Drive thickness limit not documented; confirm before buying unusually thick SSDs.

8 x LFF hot-plug bays, fixed at purchase (an 8x 3.5" chassis cannot be converted to a 2.5" layout). Dell documents a 64 TB chassis max (8 x 8 TB NL-SAS). Drives require Dell-compatible hot-plug carriers/caddies. RAID/HBA (PERC S130/H330/H730/H730P) and cable/backplane choice matter for SAS support. This is the R730 - the R730xd has far more bays.
