No soldered memory and no soldered CPU - both RAM and processors are fully socketed and user-upgradeable. Non-upgradeable items are the storage backplane and riser configuration. Some riser/expansion slots require the second CPU to be installed (slot 1 is dead with one CPU).

24 slots (12 per CPU, 4 channels x 3 DPC). DDR4 RDIMM or LRDIMM only, mandatory ECC + registered/load-reduced; UDIMM will not work and RDIMM cannot be mixed with LRDIMM. 2400 MT/s needs Xeon v4 + 1 DIMM per channel; 3 DIMMs per channel drops to 1866 MT/s. 1.5 TB = 24 x 64 GB LRDIMM; ignore listings claiming 3072 GB. Minimum 1 DIMM per CPU.

2.5" / 1.8" hot-swap bays (SAS/SATA/NVMe) 24 × SSD / HDD 2.5" / 2.5" (SATA / SAS / NVMe)
Backplane is fixed at purchase and cannot be upgraded: 8x2.5", 10x2.5", 10x2.5"+4x NVMe (PCIe 3.0 x4 Express Flash) or 24x1.8" SATA. NVMe bays map to specific lanes and some may be unusable with one CPU. No 3.5" bays, no M.2/BOSS. Dell hot-plug caddies required; 15 mm drives need clearance verification. Dell's 23 TB/18 TB figures are only validated drives, not hard limits.

Dual Intel socket R3 (Dell labels it LGA2011-1; E5-2600 v3/v4 Haswell-EP/Broadwell-EP, 4-22 cores, C610 chipset). v4 CPUs require a BIOS/iDRAC boot-pack update first or they won't post. 145 W SKUs need the high-performance heatsink/PSU option and are very loud in 1U.
