RAM: two DDR5 DIMM slots, up to 64 GB
The current 7020 SFF takes two full-size unbuffered DDR5 DIMMs. These are desktop modules, not laptop SO-DIMMs. Each slot accepts 8, 16 or 32 GB, with an 8 GB minimum and a 64 GB maximum (2 x 32 GB). Dell documents only non-ECC memory, so don't buy ECC or registered modules.
Speed depends on your processor. Systems with the Core i5-14600 vPro run memory at up to 5600 MT/s. Every other listed CPU runs it at 4800 MT/s, so faster modules won't help on those. One module runs single-channel, and two matched modules run dual-channel. Dell lists 8, 16 (1x16 or 2x8), 32 (1x32 or 2x16) and 64 GB (2x32) configurations.
With only two slots, reaching 64 GB means replacing the factory modules rather than adding to them.
Buying tips
- Buy full-size DDR5 UDIMM, not SO-DIMM and not DDR4 or DDR3.
- Buy a matched pair for dual-channel performance.
- Don't pay extra for 5600 MT/s modules unless you have the i5-14600; other CPUs run them at 4800 MT/s.
- For 64 GB, you need two 32 GB modules.

Storage: one M.2 NVMe slot plus SATA
The main upgrade is the single M.2 slot, which takes a PCIe NVMe SSD in 2230 or 2280 length. Dell lists 2230 Class 25 drives up to 2 TB, and 2230 Class 35 and 2280 Class 40 drives up to 1 TB. The interface is PCIe NVMe, rated up to 32 Gbps. The second M.2 2230 slot is for the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth card only and can't hold a drive.
There is also SATA support for a 2.5" or 3.5" drive. Dell lists a 3.5" 7200 RPM hard drive at up to 2 TB. Dell's documents disagree on how many SATA connections you get: the owner's manual lists three SATA 3.0 ports, while the UAE system guide lists one SATA 3.0 port plus one SATA 2.0 port (2.5" drives only). Open the case and check what your chassis has before planning a multi-drive setup.
If you fit a slim optical drive, the SATA 3.0 port drops to SATA 2.0 speed. Dell doesn't state a 2.5" drive thickness limit for this model.
Buying tips
- Check the length of the drive: 2230 or 2280 only.
- If you want a 2 TB M.2 drive, it needs to be a 2230 Class 25 model; Dell lists 1 TB for 2280.
- For a SATA SSD, a 2.5" drive is the simplest choice.
- Leave the Wi-Fi M.2 slot alone; it won't take a storage drive.

CPU: socketed, 12th or 14th Gen, 65 W or less
The processor is socketed, and Dell's manual includes a replacement procedure with a socket release lever. Dell's documents don't name the socket; these CPUs use LGA1700. There is one socket.
Dell lists these processors: Core i5-14600 vPro (65 W), i5-14500 vPro (65 W), i3-14100 (60 W), i7-12700 vPro (65 W), i5-12500 vPro (65 W), i3-12100 (60 W) and Intel 300 (46 W). 13th Gen Core isn't on Dell's list, so it isn't officially supported. Dell's manual revisions differ slightly: an earlier one omits the i7-12700, and Dell's US product page currently shows only the 14600, 14500, 14100 and Intel 300.
The 65 W figure is the highest Dell lists, and no 125 W parts appear. The power supply is either 180 W or 300 W, and Dell gives no heatsink rating. A 180 W unit leaves little spare power beyond a 65 W CPU, especially with a graphics card. Stay within the listed parts. Update the BIOS before swapping, especially when moving between 12th and 14th Gen. Dell doesn't state a minimum BIOS version for each CPU.
Buying tips
- Only consider the CPUs on Dell's list; skip 13th Gen and anything above 65 W.
- Check your PSU rating (180 W or 300 W) before moving up to a 65 W part.
- Reusing the stock cooler is the safest choice, since Dell gives no heatsink rating.
- Update the BIOS before you swap the chip.

How to upgrade
Before you start
- Check which OptiPlex 7020 you have. This guide covers the current DDR5 model with 12th/14th Gen Core CPUs. An older 2014 DDR3 model with four DIMM slots and no M.2 slot uses different parts.
- Back up your important files.
- If you use BitLocker, suspend it before a BIOS update. Log in as an administrator and disconnect external devices first.
- Have the owner's manual to hand for exact disassembly steps.
- If you are changing the CPU, update the BIOS from Dell's drivers page first.
Steps
- Back up your data
Copy important files to an external drive or cloud storage, especially before changing the main drive or the CPU. - Update the BIOS if swapping the CPU
Download the latest BIOS from Dell's drivers page for your service tag and install it before changing processors. Suspend BitLocker first if it is enabled. - Power off and unplug
Shut the PC down fully, unplug the power cable and any other cables, and hold the power button for a few seconds to discharge residual power. - Ground yourself
Touch bare metal on the chassis or use an anti-static wrist strap. Handle parts by their edges. - Open the case
Follow the owner's manual to remove the cover and reach the memory slots, M.2 slot, drive bay or processor. - Install the new part
For RAM, fit full-size DDR5 modules in the DIMM slots, ideally as a matched pair. For an SSD, use the M.2 2230/2280 slot, not the Wi-Fi slot. For a CPU, fully open the socket release lever, align the processor notches with the socket tabs, and check that all four corners sit at the same height before closing the lever. - Close the case and reconnect
Refit the cover, reconnect the cables and power on. - Check the BIOS
Open the BIOS setup at startup and confirm it shows the new memory size, drive or processor. A new SSD will need an operating system installed or your data restored.
Good to know
- Dell's documents disagree on the number of SATA ports (three SATA 3.0 versus one SATA 3.0 plus one SATA 2.0). Check your chassis.
- Dell's documents don't name the CPU socket; these CPUs use LGA1700.
- Dell doesn't state a minimum BIOS version for each CPU, so update the BIOS before a swap.
- Dell doesn't give a heatsink rating or a 2.5" drive thickness limit for this model.
- The 5600 MT/s memory speed applies only to the Core i5-14600 vPro; other CPUs run memory at 4800 MT/s.
- Dell documents only non-ECC memory.
- Whether the chassis has a media-card reader is unconfirmed.
