Dell OptiPlex 5080 Small Form Factor upgrades
Released 2020 · on sale
Dell OptiPlex 5080 SFF (Q470, Comet Lake-S). All memory is socketed (no soldered RAM) and the CPU is socketed. Capacity figures in Dell's docs are validated per-configuration limits, not hard hardware limits. Some spec-sheet items (SD 4.0 card reader, M.2 2230 SSD, 4 SATA ports) belong to other chassis variants such as the Mini Tower, not the SFF.

4x DDR4 UDIMM 288-pin, 128 GB max 4 × DDR4 DIMM · up to 128 GB total · 2933 MT/s
Standard DDR4 non-ECC unbuffered UDIMM only (no ECC, no RDIMM). 2933 MT/s is reached only with Core i7/i9; i3/i5/Pentium/Celeron run 2666 MT/s regardless of the DIMM, and Dell states i7/i9 in Brazil are capped at 2666. Faster modules simply downclock. Install matched pairs for dual channel. Some Dell tables list 64 GB modules, but every validated configuration tops out at 32 GB per DIMM / 128 GB total, so 64 GB UDIMMs are unverified.

M.2 2280 NVMe slot (PCIe Gen3 x4) SSD / HDD M.2 2280 (NVMe) · up to 1.024 TB
M-key NVMe (PCIe Gen3 x4) only; SATA-protocol M.2 drives are not listed as supported, but Intel Optane M.2 is. This is the only M.2 SSD slot on the SFF — the 2230 slot is occupied by the Wi-Fi card and has no SSD bay in this chassis (a 2230 SSD is an MT/other-chassis option). Dell validated up to 1 TB (Opal SED up to 512 GB); larger NVMe drives generally work but are unverified. Gen4 drives are limited to Gen3 speeds (roughly 3.5 GB/s).

2.5"/3.5" SATA 3.0 drive bays 2 × SSD / HDD 2.5" / 3.5" (SATA) · up to 4.096 TB
3 SATA 3.0 ports on the SFF: 2 for drives plus 1 shared by the slim optical bay. The internal bay takes one 3.5" HDD or two 2.5" drives (caddy/bracket needed for 2.5" mounting). Validated maximums are per-configuration: 4 TB 3.5" 5400 RPM, 2 TB 3.5" 7200 RPM, 2 TB 2.5" 5400 RPM — larger drives likely work but are unverified. No documented drive thickness limit. Don't confuse with the MT chassis, which has 4 SATA ports.

LGA1200 socket, 10th Gen Intel LGA1200 · Core 10th gen · max 65 W
Socketed LGA1200 (Comet Lake-S), user-replaceable per the service manual. Dell lists 10th Gen Core i3/i5/i7, Pentium and Celeron; 11th Gen is not supported/validated on this Q470 platform. Standard 65 W parts are the validated ceiling and 35 W T-series are also used — the SFF chassis and cooler are not validated for 125 W K-series chips. Memory speed also depends on the CPU installed (see RAM entry).
