Dell OptiPlex 3050 Small Form Factor upgrades
Released 2017 · on sale
SFF chassis: only half-height (low-profile) PCIe cards fit (1x PCIe x16 Gen 3 + 1x PCIe x1). The ~200 W PSU is Dell-proprietary, so gaming GPU upgrades are severely limited. Chassis 290 x 93 x 292 mm. Intel Optane acceleration needs a 7th-gen Core CPU, Intel RST 15.5+ and Windows 10 64-bit. No SD card reader.

- DDR4 UDIMM, 288-pin (2 slots): 2 × DDR4 DIMM · up to 32 GB total · 2400 MT/s
- M.2 NVMe + SATA 3.5"/2.5" + slim ODD bay: 3 × SSD / HDD M.2 2242 / M.2 2280 / 2.5" / 3.5" (NVMe / SATA) · max 9.5 mm thick
- Intel LGA 1151 (1 socket): LGA1151 (6th/7th gen) · Core 6th gen, Core 7th gen · max 65 W
DDR4 UDIMM, 288-pin (2 slots) 2 × DDR4 DIMM · up to 32 GB total · 2400 MT/s
Dell validates 32 GB (2x16 GB); 2x32 GB (64 GB) is claimed by third parties but not officially supported. Non-ECC unbuffered desktop DIMMs only (not SO-DIMM). 2400 MHz with a 7th-gen CPU, capped at 2133 MHz with a 6th-gen CPU - don't pay for faster DDR4. Dell BIOS has no XMP.

M.2 NVMe + SATA 3.5"/2.5" + slim ODD bay 3 × SSD / HDD M.2 2242 / M.2 2280 / 2.5" / 3.5" (NVMe / SATA) · max 9.5 mm thick
M.2 slot is NVMe/PCIe only (Key M, 2242 or 2280) - M.2 SATA is NOT documented, buy NVMe. Main bay holds one 3.5" drive or two 2.5" drives; pair a 2.5" drive with the M.2 SSD for dual storage. The 9.5 mm slimline SATA optical bay can take a 2.5" drive with a caddy (that limit is for the ODD bay only). The separate M.2 2230 slot is for Wi-Fi. Dell's 2 TB HDD / 512 GB SSD figures are 2017 shipped-option limits, not hardware limits.

Intel LGA 1151 (1 socket) LGA1151 (6th/7th gen) · Core 6th gen, Core 7th gen · max 65 W
Socketed LGA 1151 with Intel B250 chipset: 6th-gen (Skylake) and 7th-gen (Kaby Lake) Celeron/Pentium/Core i3/i5 only. 8th/9th-gen CPUs (LGA 1151 v2) will NOT boot despite fitting. No Core i7, Xeon or overclocking; Dell BIOS only accepts its validated CPU list. 65 W TDP limit (SFF). Windows 7 requires a 6th-gen CPU.
